For a Pi camera, Raspberry Pi documents hardware H.264 encoding up to 1080p30; the practical resolution and bitrate also depend on your FFmpeg build, source, and measured upload speed.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B running a compatible Raspberry Pi OS image, with a stable power supply and network connection.
- A source: a Raspberry Pi camera, a compatible USB capture device or webcam, or a video file. Input configuration varies by source and installed software.
- FFmpeg with the input support and encoder you intend to use. Package availability and encoder support depend on the OS image and build.
- A YouTube channel eligible to create a live stream, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the chosen video and audio bitrate, with headroom for network variation.
Use wired Ethernet if available and suitable at your location. In India, test the actual connection at the Pi’s installation site and at the time you expect to stream; ISP plans and local congestion do not establish the upload speed available to your device.
Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event and open Live Control Room.
- Choose the encoder workflow and copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that event. Use the matching pair in FFmpeg; values for another event may not work.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not paste it into a public post, screenshot, shared script, or video. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Keep Live Control Room open so you can check whether YouTube receives the encoder feed and shows a preview.
YouTube describes the key as the credential that directs the encoder feed and allows YouTube to accept it. See YouTube’s encoder setup walkthrough.
Check which input and encoder your Pi can use
Raspberry Pi camera
Raspberry Pi documents rpicam-vid with an FFmpeg/libav backend for encoding audio and video for network streaming; it uses hardware H.264 encoding when present. The Picamera2 manual describes its H264Encoder as using the built-in hardware through V4L2, with support up to 1080p30. That is a ceiling for this documented camera encoder, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg command, OS package, or other input can achieve the same mode. The manual gives 60 frames as the default I-frame interval when hardware is left to choose; at 30 fps that corresponds to two seconds. Do not assume other encoders share that default.

Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation covers camera software and the rpicam-vid FFmpeg/libav backend; the Picamera2 Library manual documents the H.264 encoder details.
Other supported sources
For a USB camera or capture device, identify its device path and confirm your installed FFmpeg build can read it. The input options are source- and OS-dependent. For a video file, confirm the container, codecs, frame rate, and audio stream are readable. Neither input compatibility nor hardware encoding for a particular device follows automatically from the Pi camera encoder documentation.

Inspect FFmpeg rather than assuming hardware support
Check the installed build’s encoder list, for example with ffmpeg -encoders, and look for the encoder you plan to use. FFmpeg upstream registers a hardware-capable H.264 v4l2m2m wrapper, but that does not prove your OS package exposes it or that a specific input path works with it. Make a short local encode and inspect its output before relying on it. The h264_omx route should not be assumed universally available. Consult FFmpeg’s codec documentation for options exposed by your installed build.
Choose resolution and bitrate for YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s current H.264 ingest recommendations include the following video bitrates. These are YouTube recommendations, not Raspberry Pi performance measurements or a guarantee from an Indian ISP.

| Target | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
For the Pi 4 camera’s documented hardware encoder, consider 720p30 or 1080p30 only when the camera mode, installed encode path, and connection can sustain the selection. Do not plan on 1080p60 from that documented camera encoder. For a different source or software encoder, verify what the actual hardware and build can handle rather than extrapolating from camera documentation.
Measure upload performance over the same network path, at the location and time intended for the event. YouTube advises keeping total upload use below available outbound capacity with 20% headroom; download speed is not a substitute for upload speed, and other devices sharing the connection reduce what is available to the stream. Include audio and expected motion when testing. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance and network, latency, and streaming tips explain these recommendations.

Set the encoder output to match YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP, when the selected endpoint and local FFmpeg build support it. For ordinary SDR H.264 streaming over RTMP/RTMPS, its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and up to 60 fps. AAC or MP3 audio is supported. Its advanced H.264 guidance also specifies progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR. Match output to the event’s selected resolution and frame rate, and confirm the actual endpoint protocol shown in Live Control Room.
FFmpeg command syntax depends on the source, device path, encoder and installed build, so there is no single safe command that fits every Pi. Build the output around these elements:

- Input: use the source-specific FFmpeg input options for the camera backend, capture device, or file.
- Video: H.264; choose a supported resolution and frame rate; set CBR and a keyframe interval near two seconds.
- Audio: use an available AAC or MP3 encode path if the source has audio, and verify it is present in the output.
- Destination: use the event’s server URL and stream key, with RTMPS when supported and configured.
Do not put a real key in a command you publish or share. If a command line containing the key could be visible to other local users or captured in logs, use a suitably protected configuration method for your system and restrict access to it.
Run a private test before the real stream
- Set the event to private or unlisted for the test, where available, and start FFmpeg with the intended source, resolution, frame rate, audio, bitrate, and protocol.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture, sound, and framing are correct.
- Include representative motion and audio; a static silent test may not expose problems that occur during the real program.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health notices and adjust the mode or bitrate if the feed is unstable. Check outbound capacity while other expected network use is present.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not protocol requirements.
- When the preview and stream health are satisfactory, follow YouTube’s scheduled-event workflow and click Go Live when ready.
Choose latency with the audience experience in mind: lower latency can help live interaction, but YouTube notes it can increase playback buffering. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no feed | The event is enabled, and the server URL and key belong to that event. | Copy the event-specific values again from Live Control Room; reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the source | Device path, permissions, OS-specific input options, and source compatibility. | Confirm the device works locally and that the installed FFmpeg build supports its input method. |
| Encoder is missing or fails to initialize | The installed build’s available encoders and the selected encoder’s hardware requirements. | Inspect ffmpeg -encoders; test a short encode. Do not assume a hardware wrapper or legacy encoder is present. |
| Preview is unstable or stream health reports trouble | Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, actual sustained upload headroom, and competing network use. | Reduce the target mode or bitrate, recheck the uplink at the Pi, and retest with representative motion and audio. |
| Picture appears but audio does not | Whether the input has an audio stream and whether FFmpeg maps and encodes it as AAC or MP3. | Inspect the source streams and output mapping, then check the preview again. |
| Stream starts but the audience experiences buffering | Latency mode and available connection capacity. | Choose latency based on interaction needs; higher latency may be preferable when reducing buffering matters more than near-real-time interaction. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel using uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an encoder on the Pi. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera encoder.
