Video Streaming Protocols Explained: RTMP, HLS, SRT, WebRTC, and DASH

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTMP, HLS, SRT, WebRTC, and MPEG-DASH are not interchangeable ways to do the same job. HLS and DASH are commonly used to deliver video to viewers over HTTP; WebRTC is designed for real-time communication; SRT transports live media between contribution or distribution endpoints, especially when a network is unreliable. RTMP is a name you may encounter in streaming ingest workflows, but check the target platform’s current documentation before relying on specific RTMP capabilities.

First, identify where the protocol sits in the stream

A live-video workflow has several stages: a camera or media file provides the source, an encoder prepares it, a transport carries it to an ingest or contribution endpoint, and a delivery system gets playable video to viewers. A player then decodes and displays it. One service may use different protocols at different stages, or convert between them.

That distinction matters: a protocol used to send a feed to an ingest server does not necessarily deliver the finished stream to a large audience. Apple describes HLS as delivery over HTTP using web servers and CDNs, while Haivision describes SRT for links between contribution and distribution endpoints. Comparing protocol names without comparing their place in the workflow can lead to the wrong choice.

How the protocols differ

Protocol Typical role What it is suited to Important qualification
HLS Viewer delivery over HTTP Live or prerecorded video distributed through web servers and CDNs, with multiple bitrate versions that can adapt to a viewer’s connection. Apple’s Low-Latency HLS authoring rules recommend a one-second part target, subject to round-trip-time and buffer constraints. That target is not a promise of one-second camera-to-screen delay.
MPEG-DASH Adaptive HTTP delivery Internet multimedia streaming. CMAF media can support both HLS and MPEG-DASH presentations. Device and service implementations may differ; the standard name alone does not guarantee identical feature support.
WebRTC Real-time communications Interactive audio and video, such as a session where participants need to communicate with one another. It is a communications suite, not simply another CDN-oriented segmented playback format. Actual end-to-end delay depends on the complete implementation and network path.
SRT Live-media transport between endpoints Contribution or distribution over links with packet loss, jitter, or fluctuating bandwidth. Its mechanisms include retransmission, timing support, and AES encryption. Its configured transport buffer adds delay. Haivision’s rule of thumb of four times round-trip time applies to a fairly good network with 0.1–0.2% packet loss and no significant burst loss; it is not a universal setting.
RTMP Often encountered in contribution or ingest discussions Check whether the specific platform and encoder support it for the workflow you need. Specific latency, codec, security, and current platform-support claims are not established here; verify them against the target platform’s current ingest documentation.

HLS: HTTP delivery with adaptive playback

Apple’s HLS overview describes sending audio and video over HTTP from an ordinary web server. HLS supports live broadcasts and prerecorded video, multiple alternate bitrates, and switching between those variants as a viewer’s connection changes. Apple also describes optional encryption and authentication. Those capabilities make HLS a viewer-delivery option for broad web and device distribution; actual compatibility still depends on the player, device, and service implementation.

Apple’s authoring requirements refer to RFC 8216 and specify details such as codecs, containers, playlists, security, and low-latency behavior for Apple platforms. The recommended one-second Low-Latency HLS part target is an authoring parameter, not an end-to-end latency guarantee. The requirements also account for expected client-to-server round-trip time, so a part duration cannot be evaluated in isolation.

MPEG-DASH: another adaptive HTTP delivery standard

MPEG identifies MPEG-DASH as its standard for multimedia streaming over the internet. For practical comparison, think of it as an HTTP streaming standard for adaptive delivery, not as a promise that all players, devices, or platforms expose the same features. Apple’s CMAF overview notes that CMAF segmented media can support both HLS and MPEG-DASH presentations.

WebRTC: real-time communication between participants

The IETF’s WebRTC specifications describe RTP as the media transport framework and cover how endpoints interact with NATs, relays, and firewalls. This is a different design emphasis from distributing segmented video through a CDN: WebRTC is the relevant family to consider when people need interactive media. The protocol label alone cannot tell you the total delay; the implementation and route from capture to display matter too.

SRT: resilient transport when the network is difficult

Haivision describes Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) as open-source transport technology intended for unpredictable networks. It can detect network conditions, compensate for jitter and bandwidth fluctuation, retransmit missing packets, and support AES encryption. Those mechanisms can help preserve a live feed over a challenging link, but retransmission needs time: a receiving buffer must leave room for delayed or missing packets to arrive.

Haivision makes an important distinction: SRT “latency” is the delay introduced by sending over the network, not the complete camera-to-screen delay. Capture, encoding, multiplexing, splitting, decoding, buffering, and display add their own time. Its guidance gives four times round-trip time as a rule of thumb for a fairly good network with 0.1–0.2% packet loss and no significant burst loss. Measure and tune for the actual link and end-to-end target rather than applying that figure to every network.

RTMP: confirm the exact ingest requirements

RTMP is still a name streamers may see in contribution and ingest workflows. However, a platform’s acceptance of RTMP does not, by itself, establish its latency, codec, security, or compatibility behavior. Before configuring a stream, check the current documentation for the specific ingest endpoint and encoder you plan to use.

Which protocol should you use?

Choose for the job the protocol needs to do, then verify that the entire path—from source encoder through service to viewer player—supports it.

  • For scalable viewer playback: consider HLS or MPEG-DASH. HTTP servers and CDNs support broad distribution, and HLS can switch among bitrate variants as network conditions change. Check the target devices and service for actual format support.
  • For interactive conversations: consider WebRTC. It is built around real-time communications, but the full route and implementation determine the delay participants experience.
  • For contribution over a lossy or variable link: consider SRT where both endpoints support it. Its retransmission and buffering mechanisms trade some delay for resilience.
  • For an encoder-to-platform ingest workflow: use the protocol the platform currently documents for that endpoint. If that is RTMP, confirm the relevant settings and supported formats in the platform’s own instructions rather than assuming them from the protocol name.

There is no universal winner. A production chain may use SRT to carry a feed to a distribution point and HLS or DASH to deliver playback to viewers. A service may bridge protocols, so check its actual implementation, compatibility, and operational requirements instead of expecting one protocol to cover every stage.

Compare latency as an end-to-end result

Latency is accumulated across the whole path: capture, encoding, packaging or multiplexing, transport, server processing, playback buffering, decoding, and display. A low number for one transport or packaging stage is not the same as the viewer’s camera-to-screen delay.

Before choosing, define whether you need ordinary live viewing, a low-delay broadcast, or a two-way conversation. Then check the complete system against that target. In particular, consider whether a buffer that improves resilience is acceptable, whether the player can switch quality, and whether the source, ingest endpoint, and viewer devices all support the chosen formats. IETF operational guidance treats low-latency delivery as a system-design problem, not a property guaranteed by a protocol label.

Where a cloud YouTube loop service fits

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a streaming protocol, and it does not broadcast from a camera. You upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream. The service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. For this particular 24/7 prerecorded-video use case, it is an alternative to running a streaming setup yourself, not a replacement for choosing protocols across a production workflow.

  • One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year; you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream preserves the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
