How to Record a Podcast for YouTube: A Practical Video Workflow

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record your podcast as a video with clear microphone audio, then upload the finished episode to YouTube and add it to a podcast playlist. A phone camera, microphone, headphones and quiet, well-lit room are enough to get started. For remote guests, use a recording workflow that lets you check devices before the session and, if available, keep participants’ tracks separate for editing.

Choose a recording approach

Solo or in-person podcast

Record video and microphone audio together using a phone or camera. This is usually the simplest route when the host and guests share a room: you control the camera, sound and setting directly. Plan how you will capture each voice, especially if several people are speaking, and make a short test recording before the full episode. Riverside’s equipment guidance describes a phone camera as a reasonable starting point, but it is vendor guidance rather than an independent comparison of camera apps or devices (Riverside’s video-podcast guide).

Remote interviews

For a guest joining remotely, choose a service designed for remote recording and check whether it offers local recording and separate participant tracks. Riverside says its workflow records participants locally and captures separate audio and video tracks, which can give you more flexibility when editing. That is a claim about Riverside’s service, not a feature to assume every remote platform provides (Riverside’s video-podcast guide).

When comparing remote options, consider how easily guests can join, how you will check their devices, whether recordings are captured locally, and what files you can edit afterward. The cited sources do not establish an independent ranking of recording services.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a simple recording space

  • Reduce noise: Choose a quiet space and silence avoidable interruptions where possible.
  • Light the host: A well-lit room helps the video; place available light in front of the host where practical.
  • Frame the shot: Check that the host is visible and facing the camera. A camera near eye level can make the framing easier to manage.
  • Check the picture and sound: Record a short test and play it back. Confirm that the image is framed as intended and that speech is intelligible.

These are practical recommendations in Riverside’s guide, not controlled findings or required lighting and room-treatment specifications (Riverside’s video-podcast guide).

Gather only the gear you need

A starter setup can be a microphone, headphones and a camera. A modern phone can supply the camera; use headphones to monitor sound and help notice problems before recording a full episode. Riverside’s guide names the Samson Q2U USB/XLR microphone as an affordable example and the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x as an optional closed-back headphone example. It also names a clamp-mounted LED light, microphone arm or stand, and pop filter as optional accessories (Riverside’s equipment guide).

Record the episode

Before the take

  1. Set the camera position and framing, then confirm the host is visible.
  2. Select the intended microphone and camera in the recording app or device settings.
  3. Wear headphones and make a short test recording. Listen back for intelligible speech and check that the image is usable.
  4. For an interview, confirm that each guest can connect and that their camera and microphone are selected before starting the main recording.

During a remote session in Riverside

  1. Create a studio and invite the guest using Riverside’s session workflow.
  2. Have each participant check their camera and microphone in the lobby before recording.
  3. Start the recording once everyone is ready, then stop it when the session is complete.
  4. Use the separate tracks Riverside says it captures when you edit the session.

Riverside documents this sequence in its own workflow; menu labels and product details can change (Riverside’s recording workflow; Riverside’s local-recording description).

Edit and publish a video episode on YouTube

YouTube treats a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos. An MP3 on its own is not a YouTube podcast episode: export a video episode and add that video to the podcast playlist. You can create a podcast in YouTube Studio or designate an existing playlist as a podcast (YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio).

  1. Edit the recording into the episode you intend to publish and export it as a video.
  2. In YouTube Studio, create a podcast or designate an existing playlist as one.
  3. Add the video episode to that podcast playlist and save.

YouTube describes additional discovery and YouTube Music features for eligible podcasts, but eligibility is not automatic. YouTube says some playlists are ineligible, including content the creator does not own, and copyright issues can affect eligibility. Check YouTube’s current requirements rather than assuming a playlist will receive every podcast feature (YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio).

Troubleshoot common recording problems

  • Your voice is hard to understand: Check that the intended microphone is selected, monitor with headphones, and make another short test. Move to a quieter space if background noise is masking speech.
  • The camera shows the wrong view or no picture: Confirm the selected camera, then check framing and visibility before resuming.
  • A remote guest is missing or not ready: Pause the session setup and have the guest check their camera and microphone in the service’s pre-recording area. In Riverside’s documented workflow, this is the lobby.
  • You have an audio file but no YouTube podcast episode: Export a video and add it to a podcast playlist. YouTube defines podcast episodes as videos in the playlist.
  • A playlist does not receive podcast features: Review YouTube’s eligibility rules. Content ownership and copyright issues can affect eligibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a finished episode you want to keep playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from recording and uploading an on-demand podcast. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
