To add a spectrum visualizer to a 24/7 music livestream in OBS Studio, install a compatible visualizer source, point it at the OBS audio source carrying your music, then layer and test it in your scene. For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can loop media, but that setting alone does not keep the computer, internet connection, encoder, or stream online indefinitely.
Set up a spectrum visualizer in OBS Studio
1. Check compatibility and install a visualizer source
Audio Waves Visualizer is an OBS source plugin that listens to a selected OBS audio source and draws waves or bars. Its project listing specifies OBS Studio 32.0.2 as the minimum version and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Plugin requirements can change, so check the current OBS Project listing and the project’s installation instructions before installing.
Follow the project’s current instructions, then restart OBS if required. Add the visualizer as a source in the scene that will carry the music livestream.
2. Select the audio source that actually carries the music
In the visualizer source’s properties, choose the active OBS audio source receiving the program music. The plugin reads audio level and spectrum data from the selected source, including 64 spectrum bands, and can render a transparent source for compositing. If you select a silent source—or one carrying a microphone or unrelated desktop audio—the display will not represent the music as intended.

Play music and check OBS’s audio meters to confirm that the chosen source is active. Choose a bar or wave effect, then position and size the visualizer over the background. Put titles and branding above it in the scene’s source order when you want those elements to remain visible.
3. Add playlist playback if needed
For playlist playback, add OBS’s VLC Video source and configure its media playlist, loop, or shuffle options. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS calls for 64-bit VLC. The OBS media sources documentation describes these controls; looping restarts the playlist at its end, but does not restart OBS or guarantee that the stream stays connected.

4. Test the complete scene before leaving it unattended
- Confirm the playlist plays and the selected audio source’s OBS meter moves with the music.
- Verify the visualizer reacts to the music—not a microphone or unrelated audio—and is legible at the intended output resolution.
- Watch playlist transitions and check that the stream mix contains the music you expect.
- Observe a representative run before relying on the setup continuously. The plugin and playlist documentation do not establish long-duration reliability, automatic restart recovery, remote monitoring, or guaranteed uptime.
Other visualizer and overlay options
Spectralizer: treat it as a legacy option
The OBS resource page for Spectralizer says its author has deprecated it in favor of Waveform. Check its current maintenance and compatibility before choosing it rather than assuming it works with a recent OBS version.
Tuna: add track information, not spectrum bars
Tuna is a separate OBS plugin for metadata and cover-art overlays. Its documentation describes player integrations, including VLC Video, and ways to use image and text files as OBS sources. It can complement a visualizer with “now playing” information, but it does not create the spectrum display.

External visualizer software
SYQEL’s OBS guide documents sending reactive visuals into OBS through Spout on Windows or screen sharing on macOS. This approach adds another application and a capture-source dependency. Choose it if you need its external visual workflow; the vendor’s documentation does not provide independent performance benchmarks, so assess resource use and stability on the machine you will stream from.
Keep the music livestream running—and clear the music rights
A looping playlist only handles media playback. Continuous operation also depends on the computer, operating system, network, encoder, and destination stream. The OBS source documentation does not establish restart recovery, reconnection, remote monitoring, or guaranteed uptime, so plan and check those parts of your setup separately.

A visualizer does not grant music rights or prevent copyright matching. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A stream may be interrupted or terminated if third-party content remains. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted by the rights owner through Content ID. Confirm that you have the necessary rights and any required allowlisting before streaming; see YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
