A jump cut removes a portion of a continuous shot so the action appears to leap forward in time. To make one in Adobe Premiere, cut before and after the moment you want to remove, ripple-delete that section to close the gap, then play back the edit and decide whether its visible jump suits the video.
What a jump cut does
A jump cut is an edit within a single, sequential shot that makes the subject appear to jump forward in time. The subject may shift position or posture across the edit. Unlike a cut designed to preserve seamless continuity, a jump cut makes the passage of time and the edit itself noticeable. It is common in online video and can suit a brisk, informal, or deliberately abrupt style.
There is no single correct choice: keep the discontinuity when the visible leap helps the pacing or tone; cover it when it feels distracting or conflicts with the surrounding footage. Adobe describes the 30-degree idea in its discussion of continuity conventions, not as a universal technical rule. Adobe’s explanation of jump cuts gives the technique’s context and a Premiere example.
Make a jump cut in Premiere
- Place the clip on the timeline. Find the continuous shot and identify the pause, mistake, or stretch of action you want to remove.
- Enable snapping and protect audio if needed. Snapping helps align edits with nearby timeline points. If the audio should remain synchronized with the video, lock the relevant audio track before cutting. If you intend to edit the audio too, leave it unlocked and check the result carefully.
- Cut at both ends of the section. Position the playhead where the unwanted portion begins and make a cut; make a second cut where the action should resume. In Premiere, Adobe lists C for the Razor tool, or Command+K on Mac and Control+K on PC to split at the playhead. Shift+Command+K on Mac or Shift+Control+K on PC cuts audio tracks as well. Shortcuts can differ with application version or keyboard configuration, so confirm them in your installed version.
- Remove the section with ripple deletion. Select the isolated portion and ripple-delete it so the remaining footage closes the gap. Adobe lists Alt+Delete on Windows or Option+Delete on Mac for ripple deletion. Check that you selected the intended section and that linked or unlocked audio has not shifted out of sync.
- Refine and review. Zoom in on the timeline if you need more precise control over the cut points. Play the sequence through the edit and judge the visible change in context. As Adobe advises, watch the finished edit to ensure the jump cuts fit the overall film’s tone.

Keep the jump visible or hide it?
Choose based on the intended effect rather than treating every discontinuity as a mistake:
- Keep the jump when you want time to move quickly, the cut to be noticed, or the pacing to feel punchy. Review it alongside the surrounding shots so the abruptness feels intentional.
- Cover the cut with B-roll or another scene when you want to remove an awkward pause but maintain a smoother sense of continuity. Cut away while the pause is removed, then return to the main shot when the action resumes.
- Use cross-cutting for a different purpose. Alternating between simultaneous actions can build tension; it is not simply another name for removing time from one continuous shot.
How jump cuts differ from J-cuts and L-cuts
A jump cut removes time within a shot and creates a visible leap. A J-cut or L-cut instead changes how audio and picture overlap across a scene transition: audio may continue across the change in image, or begin before it.
