There is no single monthly total for looping a stream with FFmpeg on a VPS: the bill depends on the server plan, media storage, bitrate, delivery route, region and whether you exceed the plan’s transfer allowance. As current official plan examples, DigitalOcean lists Basic Droplets at $4/month with 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer, or $6/month with 25 GiB SSD and 1,000 GiB transfer. AWS Lightsail lists a Linux plan with public IPv4 at $5/month with 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. These are provider list-price examples, not a quote for every region or configuration.
What makes up the monthly bill?
Price the setup in three parts: VPS compute and its included disk, any separately allocated storage or backups, and outbound transfer beyond the plan allowance. The headline VPS price alone does not tell you whether the plan can hold your media or carry the stream.
- Compute and bundled disk: The base plan includes a virtual machine and usually some storage and network transfer. Choose compute for the workload, especially if you transcode.
- Additional storage: Add disk capacity when your media library exceeds the included space. Snapshots or backups may be billed separately.
- Network transfer: Estimate the VPS’s outbound traffic from the stream bitrate and how it is delivered. Check the provider’s allowance and regional overage terms.

The following USD prices and resource amounts are examples published on the providers’ official pricing pages; plan details and regional terms can change. Confirm the current terms and location-specific price before choosing a server.

DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing from January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01. That billing detail does not remove the need to compare the plan’s monthly disk and transfer allowance with your workload. Check DigitalOcean’s current pricing.

How storage changes the estimate
Start with the usable media capacity in the selected VPS plan, then compare it with the total size of files you intend to keep there. The listed Lightsail Linux example includes 20 GB SSD; DigitalOcean’s examples include 10 GiB or 25 GiB SSD. Keep room for the operating system, FFmpeg, playlists and logs rather than treating all bundled disk as media space.
For Lightsail, additional block storage is listed from 8 GB at $0.10 per allocated GB-month. Snapshots are a separate storage charge listed at $0.05/GB-month. Include these line items if your setup needs extra media capacity or retained backups; do not assume they are covered by the VPS base price. AWS Lightsail pricing.

Estimate bandwidth from the delivery route
FFmpeg sends one stream to a third-party ingest
If the VPS pushes one output stream to a streaming platform’s ingest endpoint, estimate the VPS’s outbound usage from that single feed, not by multiplying it by the audience watching on the platform. The platform’s viewer delivery is a separate path; the provider plan pages do not establish a particular platform’s ingest or viewer-delivery billing behavior.
The VPS serves viewers directly
If viewers connect to the VPS itself, outbound usage grows with the number of concurrent viewers, their delivered bitrate and how long they watch. In that architecture, a single-feed estimate will understate transfer because the server sends a copy to each viewer.

Calculate the traffic estimate
- Use the actual output bitrate in bits per second, not an assumed universal figure.
- Multiply bitrate by the number of seconds streamed and the number of outputs or destinations sent from the VPS.
- Convert bits to bytes, then account for protocol or container overhead and the provider’s transfer-metering convention.
- For direct-to-viewer delivery, include viewer count and watch time in the estimate.
- Compare forecast outbound transfer with the allowance and current regional overage rules for your selected plan.
Provider pages do not define a universal bitrate or protocol-overhead percentage, so a reliable estimate needs your actual encoded output and the provider’s own meter and billing rules.
Looping versus transcoding: why it affects the server choice
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely. The -c copy option selects stream copy, while -re reads input at its native frame rate. Stream copy can avoid encoding work when the input format and destination requirements permit it; transcoding instead makes CPU capacity and codec settings part of the sizing decision. Benchmark the actual media and output configuration if you plan to transcode. FFmpeg documentation.

Looping a file does not by itself determine the monthly network bill. The outbound bitrate and delivery architecture do. Likewise, the smallest VPS plan may not be appropriate for a transcoding workload just because it has enough transfer and disk on paper.

- Select a base plan: Match the operating system, CPU and memory to whether you stream-copy or transcode, then note bundled disk and transfer.
- Price extra media storage: Work out how much capacity exceeds the bundled disk. Add separately billed snapshots or backups if required.
- Forecast transfer: Calculate from output bitrate, stream duration and number of VPS outputs; include viewers and watch time only if the VPS itself serves viewers.
- Check overage: Compare forecast or measured outbound transfer with the chosen plan’s allowance and current regional billing terms.
- Add the line items: Base server plus extra storage and backup charges, plus any applicable excess-transfer charges. Recheck provider terms because prices, quotas and regional rates can change.
AWS says Lightsail charges only outbound traffic above its transfer quota, and that overage varies by region and starts at $0.09/GB. Do not apply that rate to DigitalOcean or another provider; confirm the applicable Lightsail region and current pricing before using it in a budget. AWS Lightsail pricing.

When a VPS is the right fit
A VPS is useful when you want control over FFmpeg, the operating system, scripts and delivery architecture. It also leaves you responsible for selecting capacity, monitoring usage and managing storage and recovery. For a cost estimate that is meaningful to your setup, establish the bitrate, number of outputs, ingest-versus-direct-viewer route, hosting region, media size and backup needs before comparing plans.
