An M3U8 file is a UTF-8 text playlist used by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). It is usually not the video itself: it lists links to media segments or to other playlists. To watch an M3U8 live stream, get an authorized, working playlist URL and open it in a player or webpage that supports that stream’s HLS features and codecs.
What an M3U8 file contains
An M3U8 playlist is a text index. It contains URI lines and tags that tell an HLS player which resources to fetch and how to interpret them. Those resources might be media segments, or another playlist. The playlist is commonly identified by an .m3u8 or .m3u filename suffix, or by an accepted playlist MIME type. The format is specified in RFC 8216.
HLS delivers media over ordinary HTTP. The player fetches a playlist, parses it, and requests the resources it names; it does not ordinarily download one complete video from the M3U8 file alone. Apple’s HLS overview describes the playlist-and-segment model.
Master playlist vs. media playlist

A master playlist can provide multiple encodings. A player may select or switch between them as conditions change, but actual adaptation depends on the player and the stream. Apple describes HLS as dynamically adapting playback to available network speed in its HLS developer documentation.

How do I open an M3U8 file?
First obtain the playlist URL from the broadcaster or service authorized to provide it. A URL copied from an unknown source may be expired, access-controlled, or unauthorized. A playlist is only useful if the player can also reach its referenced segments and any child playlists.
- Use the playlist URL. If you have a local
.m3u8file, check that it is the actual playlist and that its referenced resources are reachable from your device. - Open it in an HLS-capable player. Choose a media player that supports HLS and the stream’s codecs and features. Support varies by app and platform; the extension alone does not guarantee playback.
- For a webpage, use a compatible video player. Apple documents a basic deployment using an M3U8 playlist as an HTML5 video source in its basic HLS deployment guide. Browser and codec support still depend on the target platform and stream.
If the file opens in a text editor, that is expected: M3U8 is a text playlist. Opening the playlist in a compatible player, rather than treating the text as a video file, is the relevant next step.

How do I play an M3U8 live stream?
Live HLS playback is a repeating fetch-and-refresh process. The player reads a media playlist and requests its listed segments. As a live presentation continues, the playlist is updated with new segments and the player reloads it. Under RFC 8216, a media playlist without EXT-X-ENDLIST is not marked complete; the server must make updated versions available according to the protocol’s reload rules.
For a viewer, this generally means opening the authorized live playlist in a compatible player and letting it continue to refresh. You do not need to edit the playlist. A live playlist that stops receiving updates, or segments that cannot be fetched, can interrupt playback or leave it behind the live feed.

RFC 8216 gives 10 seconds as a typical target duration, not a guarantee about every segment or stream. Do not treat that example as a promise of 10-second latency: actual segment lengths, player buffering, network conditions, and delivery all affect playback.
What to check when playback fails
- The playlist shows as text or downloads. That can be normal for a text playlist. Open the URL or file with an HLS-capable player rather than a text editor.
- The playlist loads but video does not. Check whether the segment URLs and any linked playlists are available, current, and accessible to your player. The playlist references resources that must be fetched separately; the cause cannot be determined from the file extension alone.
- The URL works on one device but not another. Check the second device’s player and its support for the stream’s codecs and HLS features. An
.m3u8suffix does not ensure universal device compatibility. Apple’s official materials do not provide a complete current compatibility matrix. - A live stream stops updating or falls behind. Confirm that the live playlist is still being updated and that the player can reload it and fetch new segments. Network or server delivery problems can also affect playback; the exact cause requires the URL, player, and error details.
- The playlist is rejected as malformed. Check that it is valid UTF-8, follows playlist syntax, and is identified by an accepted extension or Content-Type. RFC 8216 makes tag names case-sensitive. Apple recommends
application/vnd.apple.mpegurlfor HLS playlists.
If you are publishing a continuous YouTube stream
An M3U8 file is part of HLS playback; it is not by itself a way to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock.
