Live streaming statistics and trends for creators point to a large, changing audience—not a guaranteed path to growth. Stream Hatchet estimated 36.4 billion hours of live video watched worldwide in 2025, up 6% year over year. But platform totals are only comparable when their reporting periods, categories, and platform coverage match. For creators, the useful signals are what people watch, where viewing is concentrated, and what the numbers do—and do not—say about finding an audience.
How much live streaming did audiences watch?
Stream Hatchet’s annual 2025 summary, published by GameSquare in January 2026, estimated 36.4 billion hours watched globally across live-streaming platforms it tracked. That was 6% more than in 2024 and close to the provider’s reported 2021 peak of 37.1 billion hours. These are industry-research estimates summarized in a company release, not an independently audited census. GameSquare’s release describes the annual results.
Quarterly figures offer a more current view, but they measure a defined set of platforms rather than all live video. Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet reported 21.49 billion tracked-platform hours watched in Q1 2026, up 2.83% from Q4 2025. Their report also counted 330.3 million hours streamed and 11.75 million unique channels. Viewing hours measure audience consumption; hours streamed measure broadcast activity; unique channels count distinct broadcasters. Which platforms drew the most viewers in Q2 2026?
In the Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet Q2 2026 tracked-platform data, YouTube Live accounted for 12.97 billion hours watched, or 60.3% of the tracked total. Twitch recorded 4.52 billion hours, YouTube Gaming 1.79 billion, and Kick 1.34 billion. The report added YouTube Live alongside YouTube Gaming for the first time. That scope change matters: YouTube Live and YouTube Gaming are not interchangeable categories, and the expanded coverage makes a direct comparison with earlier gaming-only YouTube totals misleading.

Do average viewers per channel predict a creator’s audience?
No. The Q2 report estimated about 308 viewers per channel on YouTube Live, compared with about 85 on Kick, 78 on YouTube Gaming, and 23 on Twitch. These report-level averages describe audience concentration within the measured dataset. They do not predict what a new or existing creator will attract, and they do not establish which service makes discovery easier. An average can be pulled upward by a small number of very large channels.

What formats and games are attracting attention?
Gaming remains a major draw
Stream Hatchet’s annual 2025 summary put first-person shooters at 4.6 billion hours watched, making them the most-watched gaming genre in its reporting. The figure is a category-level total, not a forecast for an individual game, channel, or stream.
Conversation and real-world streams matter too
The same annual summary reported that Just Chatting grew 25% and IRL grew 19%, while non-gaming content made up 22% of Twitch viewing. These results argue against treating live streaming as gaming-only: personality-led conversation and real-world formats also contribute meaningfully to viewing. The figures describe the report’s periods and definitions; they do not establish a universal trend for every platform.

Participation can complement viewing
Twitch reported more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content watched from January 1 through September 1, 2026. It also said DropsEnabled streams generated 1.6 billion hours, up 46%, and that 40 million users participated and claimed Drops. Twitch’s figures are globally sourced internally, rounded where hours are concerned, and compare growth with the same dates in 2025 unless stated otherwise. Drops are a platform-specific way to connect viewing with in-game rewards and participation, not evidence that every category or platform has the same engagement pattern. What these statistics mean for creators
- Look beyond total hours. A large platform-wide audience says little by itself about a channel’s odds of being discovered. Consider content fit, community, and the platform’s audience as separate questions.
- Check the reporting scope. Confirm the period, platform set, and whether a figure covers gaming or all live categories before comparing it with another number.
- Separate audience demand from creator supply. Watch hours, hours streamed, unique channels, and average viewers per channel answer different questions. A rise in one does not automatically mean more opportunity for each broadcaster.
- Plan around a format, not just a category total. FPS viewing, conversational streams, IRL content, and Drops-driven events represent different ways people engage; the statistics do not identify a guaranteed winning format.
- Do not infer earnings or guaranteed growth. These reports do not establish typical creator income, platform-wide earnings, or a dependable growth outcome.
How to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock
Audience statistics cannot tell a creator whether a 24/7 stream is worthwhile for a particular channel. If you choose to run one, you can keep a computer-based setup operating yourself, or use a cloud service to avoid leaving a home machine and connection running. For any continuous stream, use content you have the rights to broadcast and follow YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies; viewing statistics do not change those requirements.
