There is no established universal winner. Windows and Linux can both run OBS and supported hardware encoders, but the electricity used by an always-on YouTube streaming PC depends on the particular hardware, drivers, settings, encoder, and stream workload. To find out which uses less power on your machine, compare whole-system electricity draw at the wall under the same streaming conditions.
What determines power use during an OBS stream?
OBS supports Windows and Linux, but compatibility does not guarantee that a computer can handle a particular stream. OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS System Requirements (2021-08-25) makes that distinction explicit.
OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync as hardware-encoding options on both operating systems when compatible hardware and drivers are available. Hardware encoding moves encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware, but OBS does not claim that it consumes the same power on Windows and Linux. The chosen encoder, driver support, and configuration can all affect the result. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.
Power management is not an operating-system setting in isolation. Microsoft describes it as coordination among Windows, device drivers, system hardware, and device hardware. Linux power-profile behavior likewise depends on the distribution, supported hardware, drivers, and workload. Consequently, a laptop battery anecdote or CPU/GPU telemetry reading cannot establish which operating system uses less electricity for a desktop streaming setup.

How to compare Windows and Linux fairly
Use the same computer and measure input power at the wall. A plug-in electricity usage monitor captures the whole system, unlike a CPU package or GPU-board reading. A plug-in meter such as a Kill A Watt is one example; no current model or listing is verified here, so treat that as a product-category example rather than a specific recommendation.
- Fix the physical setup. Use the same PC, BIOS settings, monitor connection, attached displays, USB devices, network link, and peripherals. Record whether the display is on or off; its state can affect the reading.
- Match the software and stream workload. Use the same OBS version and scene, sources, audio, representative content, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder family and settings, and YouTube destination settings. Keep the PC awake for each run.
- Record software versions and encoder activity. Note the operating-system version, OBS version, GPU and chipset driver versions, and confirm that the intended hardware encoder is selected and active under each OS.
- Measure comparable runs. Let each stream reach steady state, then record average wall watts and energy over the same interval. Repeat runs if practical, and report the conditions and uncertainty alongside the result.
- Test power-saving profiles separately. If you change a profile or power-management tool, treat that as another test condition and check that the stream does not develop dropped frames or other problems.
Keep the machine awake in both tests and avoid changing several variables at once. A Windows-versus-Linux result is meaningful for the tested configuration; it should not be presented as a universal OS ranking.

Settings and trade-offs to check
Windows: turn off the display without sleeping the PC
Windows 11 provides power-mode, background-activity, screen-timeout, and sleep-timeout settings. For a live stream, distinguish a display turning off from the PC entering sleep: the monitor can go dark while the computer remains awake, but sleep would interrupt OBS and the stream. Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows power settings guidance. Do not treat default sleep timings as a recommendation for a continuously streaming computer.
Windows: account for drivers and hardware
Windows power behavior involves the OS, drivers, and hardware working together. GPU power-state management also depends on driver support. Record driver versions and verify the active encoder rather than assuming Windows is inherently more efficient. Microsoft explains the broader coordination in its driver power-management documentation.

Linux: use the distribution’s supported approach
Available power profiles and their effects vary with the distribution, hardware, drivers, and workload. TLP documentation discusses differences between TLP and power-profiles-daemon and advises measuring on the target hardware with the actual usage pattern. Avoid layering or switching power-management tools without checking their documented interactions and the distribution’s defaults. See the TLP documentation.
What a useful result should report
There is no directly applicable published whole-PC wattage comparison established for identical computers continuously streaming YouTube through OBS on Windows and Linux. A useful local comparison should therefore report the measured setup, not just name an OS winner.
