Two-Pass Encoding Explained: When to Use It for Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two-pass encoding is most useful when the entire video is available before you encode it and you want analysis of the program to guide bitrate allocation. For a live stream, the encoder must keep up with incoming video in real time, so low latency and reliable throughput usually matter more than a full-program analysis pass. OBS’s “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)” NVENC option is a distinct hardware-encoder mode—not a live broadcast encoded once, rewound, then encoded again.

What is two-pass encoding?

In conventional two-pass rate control, an encoder analyzes the known source during a first pass, then uses information from that analysis to allocate bits during a second pass. This can help it distribute a target bitrate across a complete program. The exact behavior depends on the encoder and its options; FFmpeg documents first- and second-pass flags for its internal two-pass rate control, but the flags and implementation should not be assumed to work identically across encoders. FFmpeg documentation

This workflow fits a prerecorded file better than an unpredictable live input: the full program is available to analyze before the final output is made. A live encoder cannot wait for the end of a broadcast and then replay the whole event as its normal way of producing the stream.

When should you use two-pass encoding for streaming?

Use full-program two-pass for a completed video

Consider it when encoding a known, fixed-duration recording and you have a target bitrate or output-size goal. Run the appropriate analysis and output passes using the documentation for the specific encoder you chose, then inspect the resulting quality and bitrate behavior. The technique does not guarantee a particular quality improvement, and the official guidance cited here gives no universal percentage gain.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a live broadcast, prioritize real-time throughput

A live encoder needs to process frames at least as quickly as they arrive. Google’s VP9 live-encoding guide says that below 1x real-time encoding speed, the encoder cannot keep up with live input; viewers can encounter buffering and transmission breaks. This is a threshold for that real-time constraint, not a promise that any configuration running at 1x will meet every platform’s requirements. Google for Developers: Live encoding with VP9

Test with the intended resolution, frame rate, preset, and representative gameplay or other content. Watch encoder load, dropped frames, bitrate behavior, and end-to-end latency. A setting that looks acceptable in a short or simple scene may not sustain performance during a demanding game scene.

Use OBS’s NVENC multipass option for what it is

OBS calls one NVENC setting “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution).” OBS’s recording guide lists it among NVENC recording baselines, and NVIDIA’s OBS guide recommends it in its NVENC streaming recommendations. In this context, “two passes” names a particular encoder mode; it should not be confused with encoding an entire live program once and then encoding it again. The available sources establish the mode and where it is recommended, but do not establish that its algorithm is identical to full-program two-pass rate control. OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide · NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide

Treat vendor and OBS recommendations as starting points rather than universal requirements. Options depend on encoder, hardware, OBS release, and destination. OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options page is specifically for OBS 31.0; check the current interface and encoder documentation before translating a setting name to another version. How to choose an encoder mode

Compare the actual choices available in your encoder and streaming pipeline rather than treating “two-pass” as a universal quality switch.

  • Rate-control goal: Decide whether you need a target or average bitrate, or a quality-based mode. FFmpeg notes that bitrate tolerance controls how far rate control may deviate from the target average; making tolerance too restrictive can harm quality. Confirm what your chosen encoder’s controls mean. FFmpeg documentation
  • Throughput: Can the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, preset, and content sustain real time? If not, reduce the workload or choose a faster configuration and test again.
  • Latency and buffering: Consider buffering in the encoder and the rest of the pipeline. GStreamer’s x264 documentation notes that settings can introduce frame buffering and latency; `tune=zerolatency` is one possible workaround, but can affect overall encoding quality. It is not a universal setting to apply without testing. GStreamer x264 documentation
  • Hardware and encoder support: OBS exposes different options for NVENC, x264, AMD, and Quick Sync. A setting documented for one encoder should not be copied to another as though the controls were equivalent.
  • Platform requirements: Check the destination service’s current ingest documentation for supported codecs, bitrate limits, and keyframe interval. Those requirements can change; do not rely on an old ceiling or interval without verifying it.

OBS settings: useful context, not a universal recipe

OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, dated November 30, 2023, gives recording baselines—not universal live-stream prescriptions. Its NVENC example lists Constant QP, a 2-second keyframe interval, preset P5, High Quality tuning, and “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution).” Its x264 example lists CRF and the `veryfast` CPU preset. These examples do not establish that the same combination is best for every game, computer, or streaming destination. OBS Advanced Recording Settings Guide

NVIDIA’s OBS guide recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and “Two Passes (Quarter Resolution)” for its NVENC stream configuration. It also identifies GPU utilization as a reason to turn Look-ahead off. Apply that advice in the context of the relevant GPU generation, OBS version, encoder implementation, and destination requirements; test the resulting stream rather than assuming a recommendation guarantees performance. Two-pass encoding is not adaptive bitrate delivery

Encoding passes, transcoding, adaptive-bitrate packaging, and simulcast solve different problems. OBS describes transcoding as creating feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. Google’s VP9 live guide describes target rates set in the packager manifest for cleaner switching in its live ABR example, while noting that VBR or constant quality may suit workflows with more bitrate flexibility or chunked encoding. OBS’s WHIP guide describes simulcast as sending multiple quality layers. None of these delivery approaches is the same thing as a single encoder’s two-pass mode. Troubleshooting live encoding

  • The stream buffers or breaks up: Check whether encoding can sustain at least real-time speed at the selected settings. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding workload, or select a faster configuration, then test representative content again.
  • Latency is too high: Look for buffering in the encoder and pipeline. For x264, GStreamer documents `tune=zerolatency` as a possible buffering workaround, with a potential quality trade-off. Test before using it for a live broadcast. GStreamer x264 documentation
  • GPU utilization is high with NVENC: NVIDIA’s OBS guide says GPU utilization can be a reason to turn Look-ahead off. Re-test the actual stream after changing the option. NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide
  • The image quality or bitrate is not what you expected: Check the selected rate-control mode and its target or tolerance, then verify the behavior with your own content. A two-pass label alone does not define a guaranteed quality outcome.
  • A setting is missing or named differently: Verify which encoder is selected and which OBS version you are using. OBS’s NVENC options are encoder- and version-specific; its cited Advanced NVENC Options page covers OBS 31.0. OBS Advanced NVENC Options (31.0)
