Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a typical H.264 stream to YouTube Live, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set the bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending: YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Your upload connection must sustain the video and audio bitrate with room to spare; YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom.
Recommended H.264 settings at a glance
| Setting | Use |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure version of RTMP |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Choose the frame rate your production needs, up to 60 fps |
| Scan and pixels | Progressive scan; square pixels |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| H.264 advanced options | 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC |
These are YouTube’s general live encoder recommendations. Encoder menus differ, so look for equivalent settings rather than assuming every application uses the same labels. YouTube’s current Help guidance states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.”
Choose the H.264 bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
The figures below are YouTube’s published live H.264 minimum and recommended bitrates, in Mbps. Treat the recommended value as a target only if your connection can reliably sustain it. The minimum is not a guarantee that every game, scene, or motion pattern will look equally good at that rate.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum (Mbps) | H.264 recommended (Mbps) |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 14 | 50 |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 11 | 42 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 | 34 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7 | 21 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 | 14 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 | 8 |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 | 4 |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 | 4 |
For 1080p60
Set the H.264 video bitrate to 17 Mbps if your outbound connection can hold it reliably. If it cannot, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that fits the connection rather than pushing an unstable stream.

For 1080p30
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264. Do not use the 1080p60 figure just because the resolution is the same: frame rate changes the recommended target.
For higher resolutions
Moving to 1440p or 4K increases the recommended bitrate substantially. For example, YouTube lists 34 Mbps for 1440p60 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264. Confirm that the connection has capacity for video, audio, and headroom before selecting these modes.

Set audio and color correctly
SDR video
For standard dynamic range H.264, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Use progressive scan and square pixels as well.
Stereo audio
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, stereo sampling at 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps for stereo. Keep audio bitrate in mind when calculating the total outbound rate; the video bitrate is not the entire stream.

5.1 audio
YouTube lists 5.1 audio support for RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC, at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. If your production is stereo, these surround settings do not apply.
HDR is a different codec decision
Do not treat H.264 as YouTube’s HDR recommendation. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.265 (HEVC) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as live video codec options overall, but codec availability does not make the SDR H.264 settings an HDR configuration.

Make sure the connection can carry the stream
YouTube advises choosing a quality your internet connection can support reliably, running an upload speed test, and leaving 20% headroom. Shared networks may reduce the bandwidth actually available to the encoder, and a connectivity disruption can break the stream.
- Estimate the full outbound load. Include the selected video bitrate and audio bitrate, then leave YouTube’s recommended 20% of upload capacity unused as headroom.
- Check the connection under realistic conditions. A speed test is useful, but shared household, office, or venue traffic can reduce available upload bandwidth during the event.
- Lower the demand if it is marginal. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream is within reliable capacity. A stable lower setting is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.
Configure and test before going live
Use these checks as a preflight process. They synthesize YouTube’s encoder, testing, and stream-health guidance; they are not a report of independent testing.

- Set the encoder output. Select H.264, the intended resolution and frame rate, CBR, and the matching bitrate from YouTube’s table.
- Set the keyframe interval. Enter 2 seconds where the encoder asks for a keyframe interval. Do not set it above 4 seconds.
- Choose RTMPS. Use the RTMPS server/protocol option and the stream URL and key provided in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Run a representative test. Include the actual audio sources and the kind of movement or gameplay expected during the event. A static test image alone may not reveal problems that appear during motion.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm the incoming resolution and frame rate, watch for warnings or dropped frames, and keep monitoring the health messages after the stream starts.
Latency and 4K trade-offs
YouTube says 4K/2160 live streams cannot use its low-latency optimization and are set to normal latency. For other modes, lower latency can make playback more prone to buffering. Choose the latency mode according to whether audience interaction or smoother playback is the priority, and do not assume that selecting a high bitrate alone will remove network or playback delays.
Troubleshoot common H.264 live-stream problems
- Stream disconnects or health warnings appear: The connection may not be sustaining the total stream rate, or shared traffic may be consuming bandwidth. Check actual upload conditions, preserve the 20% headroom, and reduce the bitrate or output quality if necessary.
- Video looks blocky during fast motion: The bitrate may be too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Compare your encoder bitrate with YouTube’s recommended value; if the connection cannot sustain that value, lower resolution or frame rate rather than oversubscribing the connection.
- Keyframe warning or compatibility issue: Check the encoder’s keyframe interval and set it to 2 seconds, with 4 seconds as the maximum allowed by YouTube’s guidance.
- Audio is missing or not in the expected format: Verify that the encoder is sending an enabled audio track and a supported format. For stereo, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
- HDR output does not behave as expected: H.264 is not YouTube’s recommended HDR path. Review the HEVC HDR requirements rather than applying the SDR H.264 settings to an HDR stream.
- Playback buffers despite a healthy-looking encoder output: Lower-latency delivery can increase buffering risk. Review the selected latency mode and weigh interaction speed against playback stability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an encoder computer running: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed. The computer at home can stay off, uploaded video streams as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card required; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
