To go live on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming in advance. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Mobile streaming has extra requirements, including at least 50 subscribers; that threshold does not apply to every way of streaming.
Who can stream live on YouTube?
YouTube’s general live-streaming setup requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube offers several ways to broadcast, including a webcam, a mobile device, an encoder, or a console. The 50-subscriber threshold is specific to mobile streaming, not a universal requirement for all methods. See YouTube Help’s Get started with live streaming.
Allow time for first-time activation
If you have never streamed before, enable live streaming and allow up to 24 hours for activation. Trying to start immediately after turning it on can look like a technical failure when the channel is still waiting for access.
Mobile has separate eligibility rules
For mobile live streaming, YouTube lists these requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported phone or tablet. Initial activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the current mobile live-streaming requirements if the option is missing in the app.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Age requirements and minors
YouTube’s current general guidance says streamers must be at least 16. If someone under 16 participates from an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present. A stream featuring a minor under 16 without a visibly accompanying adult may be removed or have live chat disabled, and the channel may face restrictions. Review YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance before involving minors.
What can restrict or interrupt a live stream?
Meeting the technical requirements does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s policies. Community Guidelines violations, copyright strikes, matches to another copyrighted live broadcast, and some streams involving minors can interrupt a stream or restrict live access.

- Do not evade a restriction. YouTube says creators with an active live-streaming restriction may not bypass it by streaming through another channel.
- Check account notices. If access disappears or a stream ends unexpectedly, inspect YouTube Studio for a strike or restriction notice before changing equipment or settings.
- Prepare the event and access settings. YouTube recommends testing the setup, previewing the stream in Live Control Room, and checking that the intended audience can access the event. Its live-streaming tips cover event preparation.
Understand copyright risks before going live
YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If its systems detect a match, YouTube may warn you, replace the picture with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the material continues. This is a live risk, not just an issue that can arise when an archived video is reviewed later; an archive may also receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Having a licence may not be enough by itself
If you have permission to use material but YouTube still detects it, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be allowlisted. YouTube’s terms also place responsibility on the creator to obtain necessary rights, including music rights, and comply with applicable requirements. The platform guidance is not legal advice about local music, broadcast, or event licensing; see the livestream terms and conditions.

Reduce avoidable copyright problems
- Use music, video, and other material only when you have the rights needed for the intended live use.
- Do not assume that a track is safe because it is only in the background or because you plan to remove it from the archive later.
- If the stream is interrupted, check for a copyright notice and remove or replace the matched material rather than restarting with the same content.
Choose a streaming method that fits the event
The right method depends on where your feed comes from and how much production control you need. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin.
| Method | Useful when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam | You want to stream from a computer with a webcam. | Check the camera, microphone, and browser setup before the event. |
| Mobile device | You need to broadcast directly from a supported phone or tablet. | Mobile has the separate subscriber and device eligibility requirements described above. |
| Encoder | You need gameplay capture, overlays, or external camera and microphone inputs. | It adds configuration and network checks. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. |
| Console | You want to broadcast through a supported console workflow. | Confirm that live streaming is available for your channel and test the console’s stream setup in advance. |
YouTube’s live-streaming tips explain setup and equipment considerations. A USB webcam or microphone can be useful for a webcam or encoder setup, but neither is a prerequisite for every creator.

Preflight your connection and encoder
Buffering and dropped frames are often a capacity or reliability problem. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the stream’s bitrate. Treat that as a recommendation, not a guaranteed universal minimum: actual performance depends on the connection and whether you are running a backup feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Set up ahead of the event. Do not wait until the scheduled start to enable access, configure the encoder, or prepare the event.
- Check available upload bandwidth. Compare the total bitrate of the stream and any backup feed against your stable upload capacity, leaving the recommended headroom.
- Start the encoder early. Send the feed before the event so there is time to identify a missing signal or incorrect configuration.
- Preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives a picture and sound before inviting viewers to watch.
- Test failover if you use a backup. Verify that switching to the backup feed works and include its bitrate in your bandwidth planning.
- Check the viewing experience. Confirm the watch page is accessible to the intended audience, including from a mobile device if relevant.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch and listen for picture or sound problems, and check that the local archive is being recorded if you need one.
Fix common YouTube live-stream problems
“I can’t go live” or live streaming is unavailable
- Verify the channel if it is not verified.
- Check YouTube Studio for a live-streaming restriction from the last 90 days.
- If this is your first stream, confirm live streaming is enabled and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- For mobile, confirm the channel meets the 50-subscriber threshold and that the phone or tablet is supported.
- Do not try to work around an active restriction by using another channel.
The stream ends or shows a placeholder
Look for a copyright notice, strike, or restriction in YouTube Studio. If the stream contains third-party video or music, remove it or obtain the necessary rights. If you already have a licence, ask the rights holder about allowlisting your channel; a licence does not guarantee that automated matching will not interrupt the live feed.

The stream buffers or drops
Compare your stream bitrate—and any backup bitrate—with the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably. Reduce the bitrate or improve the connection if there is not enough room for the recommended headroom. A more reliable network can help; a speed result alone does not guarantee stable streaming.
The encoder is not ready at showtime
Start setup earlier, check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the watch page and audience access, and test backup failover before the event. Monitor sound and picture during the stream and verify the local archive if you need a recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
