How to Configure CloudFront for Video Delivery

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To deliver video with CloudFront, first package the source into a streaming format such as HLS or DASH, then store the resulting manifests and segments at an origin, configure a CloudFront distribution to route and cache those files, and set viewer access controls if the content is private. CloudFront delivers packaged media; it does not encode a raw video into adaptive-bitrate renditions.

Understand the video delivery pipeline

Amazon’s CloudFront Developer Guide states: “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” A player requests a manifest and then the media segments referenced by it; CloudFront retrieves those objects from an origin and can serve them from its edge cache when available. This describes the delivery architecture, not a guaranteed latency or performance result.

Common formats include Apple HLS, MPEG DASH, CMAF, and Microsoft Smooth Streaming. Choose a format and packaging workflow that the target players support. For VOD, an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaConvert can package media for storage on S3 or another server. For live video, AWS describes workflows using an encoder such as MediaLive and origins such as MediaPackage or MediaStore. Amazon CloudFront Developer Guide: on-demand and live streaming video

Choose the workflow, origin, and format

Decision VOD Live
Media preparation Encode and package the source into the formats and renditions your players need. Use a live encoder and packaging workflow to create manifests and segments continuously.
Typical origin S3 or another HTTP server holding the packaged objects. A live media origin such as MediaPackage or MediaStore in the documented AWS workflows.
CloudFront routing Behaviors should cover the paths for manifests and media files and reflect how often those files change. Manifest and segment paths may require distinct behaviors; exact patterns depend on the endpoint and format.
Examples of file paths Follow the paths produced by your packager. The AWS MediaPackage examples use `.m3u8` and `.ts` patterns for an HLS endpoint, and `.mpd` and `.mp4` patterns for DASH.

These are workflow choices, not interchangeable settings. In particular, the MediaPackage-specific live cache guidance below should not be treated as a universal configuration for every origin.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure CloudFront for VOD from S3

  1. Encode and package the video. Use an encoder/packager to produce the manifests and segments required by the player, in the selected format. CloudFront is the delivery layer, not the packaging step.
  2. Store the packaged output. Put the objects in an S3 bucket or another HTTP origin. Keep the manifest and segment paths predictable so you can configure and test the matching behaviors.
  3. Create a distribution and set its origin. In CloudFront, create a distribution and select the bucket or server that contains the packaged files. An origin is the resource CloudFront retrieves objects from. For a private S3 bucket, configure Origin Access Control (OAC) so viewers cannot bypass CloudFront and fetch protected objects directly. See the CloudFront guidance for restricting access to an S3 origin.
  4. Set behaviors for the media paths. Add or adjust cache behaviors so requests for manifests and segments reach the intended origin and use suitable cache settings. If a format or workflow needs different settings for manifests and segments, use separate behaviors with path patterns that match the actual packaged filenames.
  5. Choose a cache policy for the update pattern. Configure which query strings, headers, and cookies form part of the cache key, and use origin request settings to control what CloudFront forwards to the origin. Include only values the player and origin require; forwarding every cookie, header, or query string without a reason can reduce cache sharing and increase origin requests. Control the cache key and Control origin requests.
  6. Enable HTTPS for viewers. Use the CloudFront URL or configure a custom domain and certificate as appropriate. AWS’s S3/CloudFront tutorial describes using ACM for HTTPS with a custom domain: Get started with a simple CloudFront distribution.
  7. Point the player at the CloudFront object URL. Test that the player can retrieve the manifest and every referenced segment through the distribution, rather than using the S3 URL directly.

Configure a MediaPackage live workflow

For live streaming through MediaPackage, create behaviors that match the endpoint’s manifest and segment paths. AWS’s examples distinguish HLS manifest and segment patterns from DASH patterns; use the path patterns for your own endpoint and packaging format rather than copying an example that does not match it. Set up live streaming with CloudFront

  • Redirect viewer HTTP to HTTPS. The documented MediaPackage workflow recommends redirecting HTTP viewer requests to HTTPS.
  • Keep the minimum TTL short enough for changing live content. For this MediaPackage workflow, AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help prevent stale content. This is workflow-specific guidance, not a default for every live origin.
  • Forward only needed query strings. Include the query strings required by the endpoint. AWS specifies `m` for MediaPackage manifest modification time. For LL-HLS manifest behaviors, forward `_HLS_msn` and `_HLS_part` so blocking playlist requests can work.
  • Authorize the CDN-to-origin connection. AWS recommends enabling header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization between the MediaPackage endpoint and CloudFront. Confirm the current MediaPackage-side configuration in its own guide before deployment.

Live manifests update on a different cadence from completed VOD files, so cache settings that suit static segments may not suit manifests. Validate the behavior, TTL, and forwarded parameters against the endpoint and player you actually use.

Control access to video

For public content, viewers can request the CloudFront object URLs without a per-viewer authorization mechanism. For private content, protect the relevant CloudFront behaviors and choose an access method that fits how the player requests media.

  • Private S3 origin: use OAC to prevent direct access to protected bucket objects outside the distribution.
  • Several restricted files in one presentation: consider signed cookies. AWS recommends them for access to multiple restricted files, such as all the files in an HLS video.
  • One file, or a client that cannot use cookies: signed URLs may be a better fit.

For signed URLs or cookies, configure the applicable cache behavior to restrict viewer access and establish trusted keys or signers before issuing signed requests. See AWS’s signed cookies guidance and signed URLs guidance.

Test the distribution and troubleshoot common failures

Test through the CloudFront domain (or configured custom domain), including the manifest and several referenced segments. A manifest loading successfully does not prove that the segment paths, permissions, or cache behaviors are correct.

  • Manifest or segments return access errors: check the behavior path pattern, origin selection, and S3 bucket permissions/OAC configuration. Confirm that the player is using CloudFront URLs for all referenced files.
  • Manifest loads but playback fails: inspect the manifest’s segment URLs and verify that every path is covered by a matching behavior and resolves at the origin. Check that the selected packaging format is supported by the target player.
  • Live playback shows stale content: review manifest cache settings and TTLs. For MediaPackage, apply the workflow-specific short minimum TTL guidance and required query-string forwarding rather than assuming the VOD policy is appropriate.
  • LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not work: verify that the manifest behavior forwards `_HLS_msn` and `_HLS_part` for the documented MediaPackage workflow.
  • Requests reach the origin with unexpected variants or cache misses: inspect the cache key and origin request settings. Forward only the query strings, headers, and cookies the origin needs.
  • Private HLS works for the manifest but not all media files: verify that the access mechanism covers the full set of restricted files and that the behavior applies to both manifest and segment paths. Signed cookies can suit a multi-file presentation better than signing each file separately.
