How to Live Stream on YouTube: A Step-by-Step Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To live stream on YouTube, make sure your channel is eligible, choose a method—phone, webcam, encoder, or console—then create or schedule the stream, check your audio and video, and go live. If you are using an encoder, add the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, wait for the preview, and start the event from Live Control Room. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility well before your broadcast.

1. Check whether your channel can go live

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The person live streaming must be at least 16 years old. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the requirements and enable live streaming before the day of your event: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming. The Help page did not display a publication year; requirements are stated here as accessed October 3, 2026.

Mobile has additional requirements

For streaming from the YouTube mobile app, YouTube lists at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the last 90 days, and a device running Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limit on mobile viewers, and their archives may be private by default. These mobile-specific conditions do not apply to every streaming method. Check YouTube’s current mobile requirements: YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.

2. Choose the right way to stream

Method Best fit What to know
Mobile Quick updates or streams from a location Create or schedule a stream in the YouTube app. YouTube describes a private Live Practice Mode as rolling out to creators, so it may not be available on every account.
Webcam A straightforward stream from a computer with a webcam YouTube’s webcam flow is designed for direct computer streaming without a separate encoder setup.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, multiple inputs, or external audio/video gear An encoder is software or hardware that sends your production to YouTube. You will enter a YouTube server URL and stream key in it.
Console Streaming gameplay directly from a modern console YouTube says modern consoles can stream directly; follow the instructions from your console maker for the exact controls.

These are workflow differences described by YouTube, not performance comparisons. Mobile and webcam suit simpler direct broadcasts; an encoder gives more production control, while console streaming can be convenient when the game is already on a supported console. See YouTube’s overview of live-streaming methods.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Create or schedule the stream

For a computer stream, open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room. Use the Manage tab to schedule a future event. Scheduling gives you a shareable stream page and lets viewers set reminders. On mobile, use the YouTube app’s create flow and choose to go live now or schedule.

Before publishing the stream page, review its title, description, audience setting, and privacy. Do not assume YouTube has selected the setting you want: default privacy can vary by age. Choose public, unlisted, or private deliberately, especially when rehearsing or testing. YouTube’s setup guidance is at YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder and Get started with live streaming.

4. Set up an encoder stream

Use this route for PC gameplay, console capture cards, screen demonstrations, overlays, or a production with multiple sources. YouTube’s interface labels can change, but the essential sequence is to create the stream in Live Control Room, connect the encoder, verify the preview, and then start the broadcast.

  1. Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live. Choose a new stream or open the scheduled stream you prepared.
  2. Copy the connection details: In the stream settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming destination fields. YouTube describes the stream key as like a password and address; do not show it on screen, share it, or post it publicly.
  3. Configure your production: Set the video, audio, and layout in the encoder, then start sending the feed. Match your encoder’s output to the quality and network capacity you can sustain. The YouTube setup pages cited here do not specify a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval, so use the encoder’s current YouTube-compatible recommendations rather than treating one fixed setting as right for every connection.
  4. Check the preview: Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture, game or screen capture, microphone, and any overlays are correct. Fix problems before proceeding.
  5. Start the event: When the preview is ready and the stream details are correct, select Go live in Live Control Room.

5. Rehearse and check the connection

Do an unlisted test stream before an important public broadcast. Check what viewers will actually hear and see, including microphone levels, game or desktop audio, camera framing, and whether the correct screen or scene is being shared. YouTube recommends checking the network and, for computer streaming, using Ethernet where possible. Compare your available outbound capacity with the bitrate you plan to send; a connection that cannot sustain the upload can cause interruptions or degraded video.

  • Choose a quiet location and plan the main segments so you are not improvising every transition.
  • Frame the shot and secure the camera. A tripod or similar accessory can reduce camera shake, but it is optional.
  • A microphone can improve audio, but expensive equipment is not a prerequisite for starting.
  • If you stream over mobile data, YouTube gives about 10 MB per minute as a rule of thumb. Actual consumption varies with the stream.

These are YouTube’s setup suggestions in YouTube Help: Filming tips – Live. The page also notes that live streaming does not offer multiple takes, which is why a rehearsal is useful.

6. Monitor the stream and end it cleanly

Once live, watch the broadcast and monitor the audio and picture. For an encoder stream, end the event in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; you can find streams in the Live section of YouTube Studio. The archive rule and duration refer to the behavior stated on YouTube’s Help page, accessed October 3, 2026: Create a live stream with an encoder.

7. Protect your stream and channel

Only broadcast material you have the right to use, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube identifies receiving a copyright strike during an active live stream and matching another copyrighted live broadcast as possible triggers for live-streaming restrictions. If YouTube restricts your channel, do not try to bypass the restriction by streaming from another channel. See YouTube Help: Restrictions on live streaming.
