Amazon IVS

How to Choose the Right AWS Live Streaming Solution

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Amazon IVS when you are building an interactive live-video experience and want a managed path designed for low-latency playback, chat, or timed metadata. Choose AWS Elemental MediaLive when you need to encode a live feed for a broadcast or OTT workflow; add MediaPackage for packaging and origination features such as multiple formats, DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD. In AWS’s reference architecture, CloudFront distributes the packaged stream. These are different service roles, not interchangeable versions of the same product.

For a gaming stream, the first question is whether viewers need to interact with the host in near-real time or simply watch a broadcast-quality feed. Then map the required outputs, reliability target, and full metered cost before choosing a design.

Amazon IVS vs. MediaLive: the core difference

Decision point Amazon IVS MediaLive + MediaPackage + CloudFront
Core role Managed live-video service for interactive experiences, including low-latency channel delivery and real-time stages. Broadcast and OTT workflow: MediaLive encodes; MediaPackage packages and originates when needed; CloudFront delivers in AWS’s reference architecture.
Good fit Interactive applications, gaming streams, virtual events, or shopping where low latency and application integrations matter. Live events, broadcast contribution, or linear channels requiring encoding controls and downstream delivery features.
Latency AWS documents channel delivery under 5 seconds and IVS stage latency under 300 milliseconds. These are service-level capabilities, not guaranteed end-to-end results for every viewer, device, network, or configuration. Depends on configuration and workflow; do not assume IVS-like latency without design-specific evidence.
Encoding and packaging Managed channel path; confirm that the channel type and outputs meet your requirements. MediaLive encodes. MediaPackage can package HLS, DASH, and CMAF and support DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, and live-to-VOD.
Reliability and operations Managed service with channel-type choices; confirm quotas and workload requirements. Requires more service composition. AWS’s reference design uses parallel primary and secondary feeds through MediaLive and MediaPackage for redundancy.
Cost basis For low-latency IVS, charges include input and viewer-output usage; output varies by resolution and billing region. Real-Time Streaming and Chat have separate meters. MediaLive input/output channel hours, MediaPackage ingest/origination, and CloudFront delivery; recording/storage or ad insertion may add costs.

Amazon IVS describes channel delivery under 5 seconds and stages under 300 milliseconds in its low-latency documentation. A stage broadcast to a channel is delivered to channel viewers through the low-latency channel path. Neither figure guarantees the latency a particular viewer will experience.

Choose by working through the delivery requirements

  1. Define the viewer experience. If viewers need to interact with hosts in near-real time, or your application depends on chat, timed metadata, or managed player integration, evaluate IVS first. If you are encoding a broadcast feed into an OTT workflow, evaluate MediaLive. AWS’s IVS overview describes the service’s interactive live-video focus.
  2. List formats and access features. If clients need multiple formats, DRM integration, DVR or time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD, include MediaPackage in the architecture. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution sends MediaLive adaptive-bitrate output to MediaPackage, which packages HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints.
  3. Set a measurable reliability target. For a critical event, specify acceptable recovery time and whether a single input or processing failure is tolerable. Review primary and secondary feeds, failover behavior, monitoring, and regional availability. The reference solution documents redundant feeds and logs across MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront, but you still need to confirm the design meets your own recovery objective.
  4. Estimate cost from the whole workflow. Model channel/input hours, viewer-output hours and viewer regions, encoding outputs, package ingest/origination, CDN delivery, recordings and storage, and ad insertion if used. For a managed channel path, include IVS input charges even when nobody watches; viewer output is metered separately.
  5. Check ingest compatibility before production. AWS’s IVS low-latency guide lists RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT ingest. Confirm that your encoder supports the selected protocol and that firewalls permit the required connection before a live event.

What each service contributes in an AWS workflow

Amazon IVS for managed interactive video

IVS is the more direct path when the application itself is part of the live experience. AWS describes it as a managed service for low-latency live video and interactive features. Its documented low-latency channel and real-time stage capabilities serve different latency needs; choose the channel type around the interaction model and validate the complete viewer path.

MediaLive for live encoding

MediaLive encodes a live contribution feed. It does not, by itself, represent every downstream delivery function in an OTT architecture. If the output needs packaging, origination, or CDN distribution, plan those components separately rather than treating an encoder as a complete viewer-delivery system.

MediaPackage for packaging and origination

MediaPackage prepares live output for supported delivery formats and features. AWS describes it as supporting functions including DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, and live-to-VOD. Include it when those requirements justify the additional workflow component.

CloudFront for distribution

In AWS’s reference design, authorized playback requests pass through CloudFront to MediaPackage endpoints. AWS describes the solution as distributing streams globally through CloudFront’s content delivery network. That is the reference architecture’s delivery approach, not a requirement that every IVS workflow use the same chain.

Latency: interpret AWS figures carefully

AWS’s IVS documentation states that low-latency channels can deliver under 5 seconds and real-time stages can deliver under 300 milliseconds. AWS does not state a publication year on the current guide page consulted for those figures. Treat them as documented service capabilities, not a promise of end-to-end latency for a given audience. Network conditions, player behavior, device, and the selected workflow all affect what viewers experience.

For MediaLive-based delivery, the latency depends on configuration and workflow. The cited AWS materials do not establish one universal latency figure for a MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront deployment, so set and test a target for your architecture rather than borrowing IVS figures.

Plan for reliability and operational complexity

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution uses primary and secondary feeds through MediaLive and MediaPackage and documents logging across MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront. This provides an example of a redundant architecture; it does not establish that every deployment has automatic failover or meets a particular recovery objective.

Estimate the full cost, not just the encoder or channel

The meters differ by service. AWS’s comparison describes IVS low-latency pricing in terms of input hours and viewer-output hours, while MediaLive charges by input and output channel hours. MediaPackage is charged based on ingested and originated data; CloudFront adds delivery costs. Recording and storage, or server-side ad insertion through MediaTailor, can add further charges.

For IVS low-latency, output charges vary by resolution and billing region. AWS’s pricing material says the viewer-serving location determines the billing region, not necessarily the AWS Region where the channel is configured. IVS Real-Time Streaming uses participant-hour pricing, while Chat uses message counts. AWS also describes a limited first-year Free Tier for new AWS customers subject to channel and output limits. Verify current rates, regional terms, and Free Tier eligibility on the Amazon IVS pricing page and the relevant AWS pricing pages before committing; rates and terms can change.

AWS’s deployment-planning example gives $69.74 per hour for a one-hour event with 1,000 viewers under that page’s particular MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront assumptions. AWS does not state a publication year on the consulted page. This is an illustrative scenario, not a quote for another audience size, resolution, region, redundancy setup, or duration. The page also notes that variable bitrate and stream complexity can change output bandwidth relative to its estimate. Use the AWS deployment cost breakdown as a scenario to inspect, then estimate your own workload.

When a cloud looping service is a different answer

If the goal is not to build an AWS broadcast architecture but to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate, narrower option: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and is not a camera-based live-production workflow. StreamNeo is not a substitute for IVS or a MediaLive OTT architecture when you need their application, encoding, packaging, or distribution capabilities.

For a YouTube 24/7 stream, StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video or playlist running in the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. A slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. India-based users can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. Plans are available for a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year, and can be cancelled any time. For five or more slots, contact support.

Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year.

If your actual requirement is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube, start StreamNeo’s free first day.

Practical selection checklist

  • Choose IVS first for an interactive application where managed low-latency video, chat, or timed metadata is central.
  • Choose MediaLive when the core job is encoding a live feed for a broadcast or OTT workflow.
  • Add MediaPackage when you need packaging/origination features such as multiple formats, DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD.
  • Use CloudFront as the distribution layer when following AWS’s documented MediaPackage reference workflow.
  • Before launch, validate ingest protocol, failover behavior, audience geography, service quotas, and a workload-specific cost estimate.
