Set chat protections before you start, give trusted people only the moderator access they need, and use the lightest effective action when a problem appears. YouTube’s moderation tools can hold or filter messages, pace participation, and let moderators remove messages, apply timeouts, or hide repeat offenders; automated review is imperfect, so held messages still need human attention. This guide reflects YouTube Help documentation accessed October 3, 2026.
Set up chat controls before going live
In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls. The labels and layout may change over time, but these are the documented settings for the moderation controls described here.
Choose how aggressively to hold potentially inappropriate messages
- None: YouTube does not hold messages for review.
- Basic: YouTube holds messages it considers potentially inappropriate.
- Strict: YouTube holds a broader range of potentially inappropriate messages.
Held messages remain hidden unless the channel owner or a moderator chooses to show them. If nobody acts, they stay hidden. YouTube Help cautions: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” Treat the queue as an aid for human review, not as a guarantee that every harmful message will be caught or that every held message is harmful.
Add words you want the channel to block
Use the blocked-words list in YouTube Studio to add terms relevant to your community, game, event, or stream rules. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching listed words are blocked. These are channel moderation settings, not a separate per-event filter. In the Studio app, Content controls can manage words for comments, live chat, and community posts, so consider the broader scope when adding a term.

Choose who may participate
- Subscribers-only chat: Restricts sending messages to subscribers. You can set how long someone must have been subscribed. It can be used together with slow mode.
- Members-only chat: Restricts sending messages to channel members. It cannot be combined with subscribers-only chat.
- Live commentary: Only approved users may send messages, although other viewers can still see the messages. If nobody is approved, the channel is the only approved sender.
Choose the least restrictive mode that fits the event. For a public game launch or community tournament, a short subscriber threshold or slow mode may be less disruptive than closing participation to everyone except members. For a tightly controlled event, live commentary offers a narrower sender list.
Use slow mode when the chat moves too quickly
Slow mode sets a waiting period between messages from each user. It can be enabled alongside subscribers-only chat. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt from the waiting period. Increase the delay only as much as needed: it can reduce rapid-fire messages, but also makes it harder for viewers to respond in a fast-moving game or event.
You can turn live chat on or off after an event starts. YouTube says live chat cannot be turned off on Premieres.

Add moderators with the right level of access
You can add someone from the YouTube app while live or add their channel URL in YouTube Studio’s moderator settings. Moderator status remains in place until you remove the moderator. Assign people you trust and agree on rules and escalation thresholds before the event.

Neither role is equivalent to channel-owner access. In particular, a managing moderator’s broader control of live chat does not grant access to Studio or Live Control Room.
Respond to problems during the stream
Use the least severe response that addresses the behavior. A single removable message does not necessarily call for hiding the user, while repeated disruption after warnings may justify a stronger response.

Remove a message
Remove a message when its content needs to come down. YouTube says deletion permanently removes that message and its replies. This acts on the message thread, not on every future message from the participant.
Put someone in timeout
A timeout temporarily pauses a participant’s ability to chat. YouTube documents six durations: 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or 24 hours. Choose a short pause for a brief interruption and a longer one for more serious or repeated conduct, following the rules you set for the community.

Hide a repeat offender
Hide a participant when they repeatedly ignore guidelines or warnings. Their messages and comments stop appearing to other viewers, and YouTube does not notify them that they have been hidden. This is broader than removing one message: it affects the visibility of that user’s contributions to other viewers.

Review messages held for approval
For each held message, choose whether to show or hide it. If no moderator or owner acts, it remains hidden. Make sure someone is assigned to review the queue during a busy stream; automated review is not a substitute for an attentive moderator.
Pause the feed to inspect a message
On desktop, hold ALT or Option to pause the chat feed, then point to a message to open its moderation actions. Pausing can make it easier to select the right message when chat is moving quickly.
Use Channel Activity for context
Channel Activity can show public profile information, a user’s join date, subscriber count, up to 50 public chat messages from that stream, and counts of deleted messages, timeouts, and hides over the prior year. Use this context to make a proportionate decision; public profile details and counts are not, by themselves, proof that a message violates your rules.

Why is a YouTube live chat message not showing?
A missing message can have more than one cause. Check the relevant control before assuming the message was removed by a moderator.
- It may be held for review. Check the held-message queue and decide whether to show or hide it.
- It may match a blocked word. Review the channel’s blocked-words list, including close matches.
- The viewer may not meet the participation rule. Check whether the stream is subscribers-only, members-only, or limited to approved live-commentary users.
- The viewer may be using an embedded player. YouTube’s viewer help says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Ask the viewer to open the stream’s watch page.
- The message may exceed YouTube’s platform limits. YouTube states that viewers can send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, with each message up to 200 characters. Special characters, URLs, and HTML tags are not allowed. These are platform constraints, not settings an individual moderator can override.
Check chat replay after the stream
Live chat replay is on by default for stream archives and reproduces chat alongside the video as it appeared live. You can disable replay for an archive if you do not want the conversation retained alongside the video. Live chat itself is not available after the stream ends, although comments appear below the video. Deleting a Super Chat after the stream does not trigger a refund.
