What Is RTMPS and How to Use It for YouTube Live Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTMPS is RTMP video streaming carried over an encrypted TLS/SSL connection. For YouTube Live, choose an RTMPS-capable encoder, copy the RTMPS server URL from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and enter it alongside your stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers.

What RTMPS means—and what it protects

RTMPS is RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection. YouTube describes it as a secure extension of RTMP that provides encryption for stream data while it travels to and through Google’s servers. YouTube Help explains RTMPS and recommends it for YouTube Live.

This is transport encryption, not a guarantee of end-to-end confidentiality. It does not protect a stream key that you share or expose, secure your computer, or prevent viewers from seeing a public live stream.

What you need before connecting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • An encoder—software or hardware—that explicitly supports RTMPS.
  • The RTMPS server URL and stream key for the stream you are setting up.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the resolution and bitrate you plan to use.

You do not need to buy a hardware encoder for ordinary streaming if your existing software encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube lists professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events, but does not endorse a particular model in its guidance. Before buying hardware, check for explicit RTMPS support and the video and audio inputs and output settings you need. YouTube’s streaming setup guidance describes the basic connection workflow.

How to set up RTMPS for YouTube Live

  1. Check your encoder. Update it, then look for a YouTube RTMPS preset. If the preset is available, select it; the encoder may still require you to enter the stream key. If you use manual settings, confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS rather than RTMP alone.
  2. Open the stream settings in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and select the Stream tab, or schedule a stream. Under Stream settings, use the lock icon next to Stream URL to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may display an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so check that the copied address begins with rtmps://. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions if the controls look different.
  3. Enter the URL and key in the encoder. Paste the RTMPS URL into the encoder’s server, URL, or ingest-server field. Paste the YouTube stream key into the separate stream-key field. Field names vary between encoders; do not combine the key and URL unless the encoder specifically requires that format.
  4. Start sending the feed and check YouTube’s preview. Start streaming in the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check the audio and video, then click Go live when you are ready. Monitor stream health during the event. YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance and encoder setup guidance cover the connection and preview workflow.

Encoder settings that affect the stream

RTMPS is the transport protocol; it does not determine the video quality or codec by itself. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingestion protocols, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for video, and supports AAC or MP3 for audio. Its general recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Confirm that your encoder supports the chosen combination.

Choose a bitrate using YouTube’s current guidance for your target resolution and frame rate rather than treating one number as suitable for every stream. Also check your encoder’s capabilities and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, then checking the preview and stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance before configuring the broadcast.

RTMPS versus HLS: choose the right ingestion path

HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option, not another name for RTMPS. YouTube points to HLS for HDR workflows and codecs that RTMP does not support. Those workflows have their own protocol and stream-key requirements; changing an RTMP URL to an HLS URL does not convert the stream. Check YouTube’s protocol guidance and HDR setup instructions for the requirements that apply to your format.

Keep your YouTube stream key private

A stream key identifies your feed and lets YouTube accept it, so treat it like a password. Do not publish it in screenshots, chats, or public configuration files. If you think someone else may have access to it, reset the key in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Troubleshoot RTMPS connection problems

  • SSL certificate or protocol error: Recopy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and verify that both the protocol and server address are correct. It must use rtmps, not rtmp, for an encrypted RTMPS connection. Make sure you have not used an illustrative example host in place of the address YouTube provided.
  • Connection timeout: Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and that the URL matches the one shown for this stream. If an SSL error persists despite a correct URL, YouTube suggests specifying port 443 in the URL or encoder settings. Use the actual server address supplied by YouTube; do not substitute a remembered or example endpoint.
  • The encoder has no RTMPS preset: Check for manual server URL and stream-key fields. If the encoder supports RTMPS, enter the URL and key separately. If it does not support RTMPS, consult its documentation or use a compatible encoder; an RTMP-only connection should not be assumed to be encrypted.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct stream URL and that the correct key is entered, then verify that the encoder has actually started. Allow time for the preview to arrive before selecting Go live.
  • Video or audio is unstable: Test upload capacity, confirm your bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution, and test using representative motion and sound. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators; a successful connection alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving usable audio and video.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running from the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream live around the clock rather than send a camera or live production from an encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not going live from a camera. Start your free StreamNeo day.

YouTube rules still apply to an RTMPS stream

RTMPS encrypts the connection; it does not grant rights to the content or override YouTube’s live-stream policies. Before broadcasting, make sure you have permission to use the video, music, and other material in the stream, and follow YouTube’s rules for live content and monetization. A private stream key and encrypted transport do not make copyrighted or otherwise restricted material permissible.
