Bitrate is the amount of encoded data sent each second. With resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder and content held constant, more bitrate generally gives an encoder more room to preserve detail and reduce compression artifacts. But bitrate is not a quality score: the right setting also depends on motion, encoder capacity, upload stability, platform limits and what viewers can receive.
How does bitrate affect live-stream quality?
A video encoder compresses each frame so it can be sent over the internet. Bitrate limits how much encoded information it can send per second. When the picture changes rapidly or contains fine detail, the encoder has more information to represent. If its bitrate budget is too small, it must compress more aggressively, which can make the image look blocky, smeared or less detailed.
Increasing bitrate can ease that pressure, provided your connection is stable, the encoder can keep up and the streaming platform accepts the setting. The improvement is conditional, not a fixed gain per added megabit. No universal formula predicts how much better a stream will look: codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings and scene complexity all matter.
Motion and detail change the result
Fast gameplay, camera pans, particle effects, foliage and detailed textures are harder to compress than a static talking head or a low-motion scene. At the same bitrate, high-motion footage may show more artifacts. OBS Project notes that bitrate needs vary with resolution and frame rate, and that low-motion footage can use less bitrate than fast-moving game footage. Its guide, Streaming with x264, describes bitrate as determining how much information can go into each frame.

Bitrate works with resolution, frame rate and codec
Higher resolution means more pixels; higher frame rate means more frames each second. Both can increase the amount of information to encode. A more efficient codec may preserve better visual quality at a given bandwidth, but it must be supported by both your encoder and destination platform. When bandwidth is constrained, lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce the encoding workload; which is the better compromise depends on the content and audience.
What bitrate should you use for a live stream?
Start with the destination platform’s current ingest recommendations, then choose a resolution, frame rate and codec your connection and encoder can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder settings table gives the following H.264 and AV1/H.265 recommendations for ingestion, accessed in 2026. These are platform-specific settings, not universal quality guarantees.

Why OBS figures may differ
OBS Project gives an x264 veryfast starting range of 5,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p at 30 fps, assuming low-to-medium motion. For high-motion 1080p at 60 fps, it says more than 8,000 kbps may be needed for smooth playback. Those are contextual encoder examples, not YouTube’s platform recommendations or limits. Keep the platform’s ingest settings separate from an encoder guide’s illustrative starting point.

Twitch and other destinations
Do not carry YouTube’s numbers over to Twitch or another service. Twitch’s official guidance says bitrate improves quality only up to a point, and that higher resolution and frame rate need more bitrate and encoding; consult Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines for current details. Exact Twitch figures are not included here because the detailed limits were not established in the reviewed page material.
How to choose a stable setting
- Check the destination’s current ingest table. Confirm supported codecs, output dimensions, frame rates, bitrate range and any required keyframe or rate-control settings. For YouTube, use its live encoder settings page.
- Measure upload speed. Run a speed test and account for other devices and network traffic. YouTube specifically recommends an upload speed test. NVIDIA suggests using around 75% of measured upload speed as a starting point; treat that as vendor guidance, not a guarantee that your connection will be stable.
- Match resolution and frame rate to bandwidth and content. Pick a combination that your upload can sustain. If a high-motion game looks poor at your available bitrate, NVIDIA recommends lowering resolution as one option; reducing frame rate is another way to reduce encoding demand. Neither choice is automatically best for every audience.
- Set the encoder within its capacity. An overloaded encoder can skip or distort frames even when the network has enough bandwidth. If OBS reports encoding overload or output skips, first reduce resolution or frame rate; then adjust the encoder preset as needed. A more demanding preset can exceed available hardware capacity.
- Test representative gameplay and audio. Include the fastest movement and most detailed scenes your broadcast is likely to contain. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators before going live and monitor them during the broadcast.
NVIDIA’s recommendation to use roughly 75% of measured upload speed is a vendor starting point, not a universal rule. Leave practical headroom for network variation and other traffic rather than setting a bitrate that consumes the full measured upload capacity.

Should you lower resolution or increase bitrate?
If the connection has spare stable capacity and the encoder is not overloaded, raising bitrate toward the platform’s recommendation may help reduce compression artifacts. If you are already near the reliable upload limit, raising it can cause dropped frames or interruptions. In that case, reduce the data demand instead: lower resolution or frame rate, or use a more efficient supported codec.
For high-motion scenes, NVIDIA advises lowering resolution when bitrate is limited. That is vendor guidance, not a universal perceptual rule; the better trade-off depends on your game, display size, audience bandwidth and priorities. NVIDIA also says viewers may notice an FPS drop more than a resolution drop, but this is vendor guidance rather than a universal finding.

Why does a stream look blurry or blocky when I move?
- Artifacts mainly during fast movement: Motion is demanding the available encoding budget. Test a higher bitrate if upload headroom and platform limits permit; otherwise try a lower resolution or frame rate.
- Blur or blocks throughout the stream: Check that the bitrate is appropriate for the resolution, frame rate and codec, and compare it with the destination’s current recommendation.
- Skipped or distorted frames: Check encoder load and network health. Reduce resolution or frame rate if the encoder is overloaded; lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the output.
- Quality drops when other people use the network: Competing traffic can reduce available upload capacity. Retest under typical household conditions and leave more headroom.
- Some viewers still see poor quality: A high-quality source setting does not ensure every viewer has enough bandwidth or a compatible device. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewer-side playback conditions still vary.
How bitrate fits into a 24/7 YouTube stream
The same encoding trade-offs apply when playing prerecorded video as a continuous YouTube live stream: motion, detail, resolution, frame rate, codec and the destination’s ingest rules still shape the output. If you run a do-it-yourself setup, test a representative segment and monitor both encoding and stream health; bitrate alone cannot correct an overloaded encoder or unstable connection.
