How to Deliver 24/7 Video Streams with Amazon CloudFront

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CloudFront delivers a 24/7 video stream to viewers; it does not encode raw footage or create the stream. A typical AWS workflow is source feed → AWS Elemental MediaLive → AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore → CloudFront → player. For an HLS-focused reference architecture, AWS also documents a MediaLive-to-S3-to-CloudFront approach. Choose the encoder, packager or origin, and CloudFront configuration for your formats, latency, security, redundancy, and expected cost.

What CloudFront does in a live-stream workflow

CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) in the workflow: it distributes prepared video from an origin to viewers. It is not an encoder. An encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive processes the source feed into viewer-ready outputs; a packager or origin makes those outputs available for playback; CloudFront delivers them to players.

In adaptive-bitrate streaming, the media is divided into segments, while manifests tell a player which segments to request and in what order. Common formats include HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. The formats your viewers need determine the output and packaging configuration—not a generic CloudFront setting. These component roles are described in the Amazon CloudFront Developer Guide, “Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront,” and AWS Elemental MediaLive documentation.

Choose an AWS architecture

Pattern Best fit Important checks
MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront You need packaging for multiple device formats or MediaPackage features such as DRM. Use each MediaPackage endpoint as an origin; route the correct manifest and segment paths; enable origin authorization; and configure low-latency HLS query forwarding if applicable.
MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront MediaLive already emits the formats viewers need and you want MediaStore as the origin. Grant CloudFront access, set the MediaStore data endpoint and origin path, and choose cache behavior suited to the output and segment durations.
MediaLive → S3 → CloudFront reference solution You want an HLS-oriented reference deployment and CloudFormation setup. The documented sample produces adaptive-bitrate HLS and supports four source-input types. It is described for use during a live event; assess continuous-channel failover and operations requirements before using it as a 24/7 production design.

Compare candidate designs by playback formats and device coverage, need for packaging or DRM, origin behavior and cacheability, latency target, authorization, redundancy, supported AWS Regions, operational workload, and total cost for your bitrate and audience. AWS documents these architectural choices, but the documentation cited here does not establish a universal performance winner.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build a MediaPackage and CloudFront workflow

  1. Prepare the source and encoder. Create the source input and configure an AWS Elemental MediaLive channel with the required output profiles. Start the channel so it ingests the upstream source, transcodes it, and sends outputs downstream.
  2. Create the MediaPackage channel and endpoints. Choose endpoints for the playback formats you need. MediaPackage can package adaptive-bitrate output into HLS, DASH, and CMAF.
  3. Create the CloudFront distribution and origin. Enter the appropriate MediaPackage origin domain and endpoint path. If the MediaPackage origin is in another AWS account, AWS says to use HTTPS. A wildcard path behavior must route somewhere; AWS describes using a dummy origin for unmatched paths rather than accidentally sending them to a real origin.
  4. Add behaviors that match the endpoints. Route the actual manifest and segment paths to the correct origin. AWS examples distinguish HLS .m3u8 manifests from .ts segments; DASH and CMAF use their relevant manifest types and .mp4 segments. Treat these as examples, not interchangeable templates: match behaviors to the endpoint and its real output.
  5. Set viewer protocol and caching policies. Redirect viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS. Configure cache policies for the actual manifest and segment behaviors. For a MediaStore origin, AWS says to choose a policy that reflects caching needs and segment duration; manifest and media-segment requirements may differ.
  6. Configure low-latency HLS when used. If the player uses LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query strings on manifest requests. Without those query parameters, the requests may not behave as the low-latency workflow expects.
  7. Authorize CloudFront at the origin. Enable MediaPackage header-based CDN authorization so requests between MediaPackage and CloudFront are authorized. Protect the authorization secret. In AWS’s reference architecture, the CDN identifier is created at deployment and stored in AWS Secrets Manager.
  8. Validate the end-to-end path. Test with the actual player and device set, inspect origin and CDN behavior, exercise failover, and estimate cost using current service pricing and your expected traffic. These are operational checks to perform; they are not a claim that a particular deployment has been tested here.

Plan availability, regions, and operations

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture supports primary and secondary live streams through MediaLive and MediaPackage. MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific AWS Regions. If MediaConnect supplies input flows, deploy the solution in the same Region as those flows. Check current regional availability and service quotas when planning because both can change.

Use the workflow boundaries to narrow faults. If playback fails, check in order: the upstream source contribution, MediaLive ingest and channel, packaging or origin, CloudFront behavior and cache, then player compatibility. This fault-isolation sequence follows the separate roles AWS assigns to those components; it is a practical diagnostic approach, not a guarantee that every incident follows that order.

Estimate the cost for a continuous channel

There is no generally applicable 24/7 price in the AWS deployment-planning guide. Its cost tables describe particular event scenarios, not a universal continuous-stream quote. The examples use assumptions including US-East-1 standard pricing and the highest bitrate for an example upper range. One scenario assumes a 99% cache/hit ratio between CloudFront and MediaPackage; that is an assumption for that scenario, not a guaranteed hit rate. AWS also notes that QVBR and variable video complexity may reduce bandwidth and the estimate.

Your estimate depends on the encoded profile and bitrate, stream duration, viewer count, region, cache behavior, and current service prices. A continuous channel runs much longer than a live event, so do not annualize an event example without checking that its assumptions match your workload. Model the expected bitrate and viewing patterns with current AWS pricing before choosing an architecture.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live without running the AWS pipeline

The AWS workflow above is for delivering a live source through AWS services. If your specific goal is instead to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a different, narrower option: it plays uploaded videos to YouTube and does not take a live camera feed or replace CloudFront in an AWS delivery architecture.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
