A typical AWS workflow uses AWS Elemental MediaLive to encode, then MediaPackage or MediaStore to prepare and serve the stream, with CloudFront distributing it. The right design depends on your playback formats, latency target, origin security, and failover needs.
What CloudFront does in a live-streaming workflow
CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) layer: it receives viewer requests and delivers video from an origin. It does not take a camera feed or raw video and turn it into a playable live stream. Before CloudFront can distribute video, an encoder must produce the video and a packager or origin must provide playback manifests and segments.
A manifest describes the available stream and the order of its segments. Common delivery formats include Apple HLS, MPEG-DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. The exact formats and endpoints depend on the workflow you build. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guide describes the delivery configuration; its video-streaming overview explains the roles of encoding, packaging, origins, and distribution.

MediaLive with MediaPackage
In AWS’s documented managed-services pattern, MediaLive encodes the incoming live feed and MediaPackage provides channel endpoints in the formats needed for playback. MediaPackage is the relevant choice when you need different output formats or packaging features such as DRM. CloudFront then distributes requests for those endpoints.

MediaLive with MediaStore
MediaStore can serve as the origin when the encoded output is already in the formats your viewers need and you want a scalable origin without MediaPackage’s packaging role. This is not a universal replacement: choose it only when your output and delivery requirements do not call for MediaPackage’s packaging features.
Other origins and packaging tools
AWS services are not the only possible building blocks. AWS also describes workflows using third-party tools such as Wowza and Unified Streaming. The architectural requirement remains the same: CloudFront needs a suitable origin containing the manifests and segments viewers request.
Configure CloudFront for a MediaPackage live endpoint
AWS’s setup procedure assumes that you have already created a MediaPackage channel and endpoint. Configure the CloudFront distribution to use the endpoint as an origin, then create cache behaviors whose path patterns route manifest and segment requests to the intended endpoint. The pattern must match both the delivery format and that endpoint’s path prefix. AWS’s configuration guide provides format-specific examples.

These are examples of path extensions, not complete behavior patterns. Build each path pattern around the endpoint prefix so requests reach the correct origin and behavior.
Set cache behavior for live content
AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less in this documented workflow to help prevent stale content. That is a cache-configuration recommendation, not a promise about how close every viewer will be to the live edge. Apply cache settings deliberately to both manifests and segments; live manifests change as the event progresses, while segments are the media units referenced by the manifest.
Forward only query strings your endpoint needs
Configure the manifest cache policy to forward query strings required by enabled MediaPackage features. AWS documents m for the endpoint’s modified-time tag, start and end for time-shifted viewing, and aws.manifestfilter for manifest filtering. Do not assume every endpoint needs all of them.

For LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward both _HLS_msn and _HLS_part on manifest requests. If they are not forwarded, the request parameters needed by the origin do not reach it as intended. These are feature-specific cache-policy settings, rather than a general instruction to forward every query string. AWS’s live-streaming setup guide covers these parameters and behavior patterns.
Protect the origin and plan viewer access separately
For a MediaPackage origin, AWS recommends enabling header-based CDN authorization between the MediaPackage endpoint and the CloudFront distribution. In the AWS Live Streaming reference solution, a custom HTTP header authenticates those requests and the CDN identifier is stored in AWS Secrets Manager. This helps prevent unauthorized requests to the origin through that integration; it is not the same as viewer authentication or entitlement checks. If viewers should be restricted, design that access control separately. AWS’s CloudFront guide describes the authorization recommendation.
Design resilience as a system, not a CloudFront setting
A CloudFront distribution does not automatically configure redundant ingest, encoder failover, or recovery for your whole live workflow. AWS’s Live Streaming reference architecture illustrates a more resilient design with two input feeds for MediaLive, MediaPackage producing HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints, and CloudFront delivering the result. Its architecture documentation describes primary and secondary live streams; treat that as an example design to adapt, not an automatic property of CloudFront. See AWS’s architecture overview and architecture details.

Set a latency target without assuming a universal number
CloudFront alone does not establish end-to-end latency. The result depends on the encoder, packaging workflow, manifest and segment settings, player behavior, and delivery configuration. AWS provides low-latency workflow instructions for MediaLive and MediaPackage, as well as LL-HLS-specific CloudFront cache-policy guidance, but the cited documentation does not establish one latency figure that applies to every implementation. Start with the actual event requirement and validate the complete workflow and player against it. See AWS’s MediaLive low-latency output guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions to settle before choosing a design
- Are the outputs already in the formats you need? If so, an origin such as MediaStore may suit the workflow; if you need format packaging or features such as DRM, consider MediaPackage.
- Which devices and playback formats must work? Specify the endpoints and manifests your audience needs before creating CloudFront behaviors.
- How low does latency need to be? Evaluate the whole encode-to-player chain, including LL-HLS requirements where relevant.
- Who may access the origin and who may watch? Protect the MediaPackage-to-CloudFront path and separately define any viewer authorization or entitlement rules.
- What fails over, and how? Decide how ingest, encoding, packaging, and delivery recover; a reference design can inform that plan, but does not configure it for you.
- Where will the workflow run, and what will it cost? Check service availability and estimate the intended workload. The cited AWS architecture guidance does not establish one universally lowest-cost configuration.
Common configuration problems
Manifest or segment requests return errors
Check that the distribution origin is the intended endpoint and that each cache behavior matches the endpoint prefix and the relevant manifest or segment path. A pattern for one format will not necessarily route another format’s requests correctly.
Playback shows stale live content
Review the minimum TTL and cache behavior for changing manifests. AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less for its documented MediaPackage workflow to help prevent stale content; it does not guarantee a particular live-edge distance.

LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not behave as expected
Check that the manifest cache policy forwards both _HLS_msn and _HLS_part so the required parameters reach the origin.
Time-shift or filtered manifests do not work
Verify that the endpoint feature is enabled and that the manifest cache policy forwards its required query string: start and end for time-shifted viewing, or aws.manifestfilter for manifest filtering. Forward m when the endpoint’s modified-time tag requires it.
CloudFront cannot fetch from a protected MediaPackage endpoint
Check that header-based CDN authorization is configured between the endpoint and distribution, and that the expected authorization header is used. Do not mistake origin authorization for viewer access control.
When StreamNeo solves a different problem
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 by looping uploaded videos; it is not a CloudFront CDN or an encoder-and-origin architecture for distributing a live camera or event feed. If your goal is specifically to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo’s flow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly service: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
