Fix FFmpeg Audio Out of Sync in a YouTube Live Product Demo

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First determine whether audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows during the demo. A stable, measured offset may be corrected with FFmpeg’s input option -itsoffset; growing drift calls for checking input clocks, timestamps, frame-sync behavior, and output timestamp handling. Without your command, FFmpeg build, inputs, and a sample, there is no reliable stream-specific offset or single fix to prescribe.

Identify the kind of sync error

Choose a clear event in the demo that is both visible and audible—for example, a spoken cue paired with an on-screen action, or a clap. Compare the sound with the matching action near the start and again later.

  • Roughly constant gap: Audio stays about the same amount ahead of or behind the picture. That pattern is consistent with a fixed timing offset.
  • Gap grows or changes: The streams increasingly separate, or the mismatch varies over time. Investigate timing and clock behavior rather than applying an arbitrary fixed offset.

This distinction guides diagnosis; it does not establish the cause of any particular YouTube Live stream.

Check the inputs and their clocks

Write down the actual FFmpeg inputs and how each source timestamps its data. If video and audio come from separate capture devices, find out whether their timestamps derive from a common clock. FFmpeg says that -isync adjusts target input timestamps by the difference in start times, and that the source timestamps should derive from the same clock for expected results. If either input has no start timestamp, FFmpeg makes no sync adjustment. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

-isync is not a general cure for mismatched clocks: its documented adjustment depends on input start times and a shared clock source. Establish how the inputs are timestamped before trying it.

Correct a measured, fixed offset with -itsoffset

FFmpeg documents -itsoffset as an input option. It adds the specified duration to timestamps for the input that follows it; a positive offset delays that input’s streams. Put the option with the input whose timing you intend to adjust, and choose its direction and amount from measurement—not guesswork. Consult the FFmpeg option documentation for syntax and version-specific details.

After changing the offset, check the same audiovisual event at multiple points, including near the end of the demo. Confirm the result on the actual live output as well as in local playback: a local correction alone does not establish that viewers receive synchronized audio and video.

Check output frame synchronization and timestamps

FFmpeg’s video synchronization modes affect how frames are passed to the output. The documented modes are passthrough, cfr, vfr, and auto. With CFR, frames may be duplicated or dropped to achieve the requested constant frame rate. With VFR, frames retain their timestamps or may be dropped to prevent duplicate timestamps. FFmpeg also notes that the muxer may further modify timestamps. See the FFmpeg documentation on video sync and timestamps.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

These modes describe output frame handling; they are not interchangeable fixes for incorrect input timestamps. If the mismatch grows, inspect the input timing and output behavior together, and verify whether synchronization holds across the whole demo.

Use FFplay to observe drift

FFplay’s statistics can help you observe audio/video synchronization drift while reproducing the issue. Its documentation describes audio, video, and external master clocks, and notes that choosing a master clock is mainly useful for debugging. Use the statistics to see how the mismatch behaves over time, then compare that diagnostic playback with the live stream viewers receive. Details are in the FFplay documentation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to investigate Next step
The same visible/audible gap persists Which input is early or late, and the measured size of the offset Test a measured -itsoffset on the input being adjusted; recheck at several points and on the live output.
The gap grows during the demo Input timestamp behavior, whether audio and video share a clock, frame timing, and output sync mode Inspect the sources and output handling; do not assume a fixed offset will stop accumulating drift.
-isync appears to have no effect Whether both inputs have start timestamps and derive timestamps from the same clock source Check those prerequisites; FFmpeg makes no adjustment if either input lacks a start timestamp.
Local playback looks right, but the live stream does not The difference between diagnostic playback and actual output, including output timestamp handling Verify synchronization using a known event in the live stream received by viewers.

What cannot be diagnosed from the title alone

The available details do not identify the command line, installed FFmpeg version, capture devices, offset direction or amount, or whether drift accumulates. They also do not establish a YouTube-specific setting or ingest requirement as the cause. A precise stream-specific command would require those details and a reproducible example.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded product-demo recording to loop continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and does not repair audio/video sync in an FFmpeg capture workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
