Neither Streamlabs nor StreamElements is the universal winner. Streamlabs is the more direct fit if you want a desktop app built on the OBS engine or want to bring Streamlabs tools into OBS through its plugin. StreamElements suits streamers who prefer to manage overlays online and load them into broadcasting software as browser sources, alongside its advertised free alerts and widgets. Choose by workflow and the specific tools you need—not by an assumed performance advantage.
How the two platforms fit into a streaming setup
Streamlabs and StreamElements both offer overlays, alerts, and tools for engaging with viewers, but they organize the work differently. Streamlabs offers a desktop app and a separate plugin for OBS; StreamElements describes a cloud-managed overlay workflow that renders overlays in broadcasting software through a browser source.
| Decision point | Streamlabs | StreamElements |
|---|---|---|
| Core workflow | Desktop app built on the OBS engine, or Streamlabs tools added to OBS with its plugin. Streamlabs FAQ; Streamlabs Plugin for OBS Guide | Manage overlays in its editor and load them into broadcast software as a browser source. StreamElements Overlays documentation |
| Overlays and alerts | The free plan lists hundreds of free overlay and widget themes and dozens of widgets; Ultra describes access to thousands and additional options. These are Streamlabs’ feature counts, not independent quality ratings. Streamlabs Ultra | StreamElements advertises customizable alerts and widgets as free; its quick-start guide covers themes and overlay management. StreamElements; Quick-Start Guide |
| Chat and interaction | Its feature set includes Cloudbot moderation and interaction tools; custom bot naming is listed as an Ultra feature. Streamlabs FAQ; Streamlabs Ultra | Its quick-start guide lists chatbot commands, modules, timers, spam filters, and loyalty integration. Quick-Start Guide |
| Tipping | Streamlabs says its free tier includes a tip page and that it takes no cut; Ultra adds tip-page customization. The statement does not establish whether payment processors charge fees. Streamlabs FAQ; Streamlabs Ultra | StreamElements documents tipping pages and tip alerts. Payment processing costs and availability depend on terms that should be checked for your location. Quick-Start Guide |
| Paid features | Streamlabs places multistreaming, expanded overlay and app access, and other features in Ultra. Streamlabs Ultra | StreamElements advertises alerts and widgets as free; the reviewed product pages do not establish a complete comparable paid-plan inventory. StreamElements |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Streamlabs if you want its app or OBS plugin
Streamlabs is the more natural starting point if you want a desktop app built on the OBS engine, or you already use OBS and want to add Streamlabs tools through its plugin. Its free plan includes a tip page according to Streamlabs, while Ultra groups features such as multistreaming and expanded overlay and app access.
Choose StreamElements if you prefer browser-source overlays
StreamElements is a better workflow match if you want to edit overlays in its online tools and add them to broadcast software as browser sources. Its documented toolkit also includes chat commands, timers, spam filters, loyalty functions, tipping pages, and tip alerts.

Compare the specific tools you will use
Both platforms provide overlays and alerts, and both offer ways to interact with viewers and accept tips. Counts of assets and vendor descriptions are not evidence that one service is more reliable, faster, or easier in every setup. If a particular overlay editor, bot function, or OBS workflow matters to you, compare that feature directly before committing.
What to verify before paying or setting up tips
- Check current plan features and prices on the provider’s site for your country. The available product information does not establish exact current subscription prices or a complete, like-for-like paid-plan comparison.
- Review payment terms and regional availability for tipping. Streamlabs’ statement that it takes no cut applies to its own tip page wording; it does not settle third-party processing fees.
- Treat StreamElements’ description of alerts and widgets as free as the company’s claim, and confirm current terms when you sign up.
- Do not use sponsorship listings as a deciding guarantee of income. Streamlabs describes sponsorship opportunities in its App Store as an Ultra feature, while StreamElements advertises sponsorship offers and says sponsors are vetted. Those claims do not establish that a particular creator will receive an offer.
Keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video
If what you need is not a live broadcasting overlay but a 24/7 YouTube stream that loops uploaded video, StreamNeo is a separate option: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or playlists. It is not a camera-streaming replacement for Streamlabs or StreamElements.
