Identify the list that is changing
“Playlist order” can mean three different things during a stream:
- Media playback: video or audio files play in a different sequence from the VLC Video source’s file list.
- Scene layering: a camera, overlay, or other OBS source appears in front of or behind another source. This is visual stacking, not playback order.
- YouTube Shopping products: tagged products appear to viewers in an unexpected order.
Changing one list does not reorder the others: OBS controls its media playlist and scene layers, while YouTube Studio controls tagged product order.
Fix an OBS media playlist playing in the wrong order
- In OBS, select the VLC Video source used for the playlist, then open its properties.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. Set it to Off to keep playback in the order of the file list. OBS documents Off as the default, but confirm the setting in the source you are using.
- Review the file list in the source properties and make sure it is in the intended sequence.
- Apply the change and observe the source’s next playback sequence. If shuffle is already off and the order still changes, the official guidance does not identify one universal cause; diagnosis depends on the playlist, source, and workflow.
The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide for the source properties and requirements.

Fix YouTube Shopping products appearing in the wrong order
- Open the stream’s product tagging controls in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Drag the tagged products into the order you want viewers to see.
- Save the changes.
YouTube says the order in the product picker is the order shown to viewers. Updates may not appear to some people who are already watching. For the best viewer experience, YouTube recommends finishing product removals or rearrangements at least 30 minutes before the live stream begins. If OBS scene elements are in the wrong visual order
When the issue is an overlay covering the wrong element, use OBS’s Sources dock rather than the VLC playlist. Drag sources up or down in the list, or select a source and use the up/down arrow buttons. Source order determines which elements appear on top in the scene preview. Troubleshoot a sequence that still changes
- VLC files play out of sequence: confirm you changed the properties of the VLC Video source that is actually playing, and verify that Shuffle Playlist is off.
- VLC Video is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly: verify that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Products look out of order to some viewers: confirm the sequence in YouTube Studio, save it, and account for YouTube’s warning that existing viewers may not see updates. Make changes at least 30 minutes before going live when possible.
- An overlay or video element covers another: adjust the source’s position in the OBS Sources list; that list controls scene layering, not media playback.
