The result depends on the computer and the OBS workload, and official OBS guidance does not publish a standard whole-PC electricity figure for this use. To find your number, measure the desktop at the wall while it runs your actual stream, convert the reading to kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your electricity rate.
Why there isn’t one typical wattage
The relevant figure is the power drawn by the complete computer at the wall—not a CPU or GPU utilization percentage, and not a component’s rated maximum. OBS says CPU requirements vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Meeting OBS’s minimum requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream successfully. OBS system requirements
Encoding is only part of the workload. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it moves video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS also uses the GPU to composite and render scenes; if GPU resources are constrained, its troubleshooting guidance suggests reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying the scene. Those recommendations explain why settings can affect system load, but they do not establish how many watts a configuration will draw at the wall—or prove that one encoder always uses less electricity overall. A static image, a video source, browser overlays, and changing scenes can also involve different work. OBS’s published guidance does not quantify their electricity use in a standardized test. Do not convert a utilization percentage into watts or kWh without measuring.

Measure your own OBS loop stream
- Measure at the outlet. Plug the desktop’s AC input into an outlet-based electricity monitor that accumulates energy. For the PC alone, measure the tower; include the display and peripherals only if you want the whole workstation’s consumption.
- Run the real workload. Start the loop stream with the OBS scene, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and other programs you expect to leave running. Measure for a representative interval that captures normal variation, rather than relying on a momentary reading.
- Record energy or average power. If the meter reports kWh, subtract its starting reading from its ending reading. If it reports average watts, calculate kWh = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Estimate the cost. Multiply measured kWh by the electricity price per kWh on your own bill or plan. Rates depend on location and tariff, so there is no universal cost that applies to every reader.
The U.S. Department of Energy explains that energy is power multiplied by time, with watt-hours divided by 1,000 to convert to kWh. Its measurement guidance says that when consumption fluctuates, measure energy over a period and divide by that period to determine average power. Compare settings without changing the test
If you want to know whether a different OBS configuration changes your electricity use, compare equivalent runs. Keep the stream duration and loop content constant, and note the PC hardware, encoder, output resolution, frame rate, scene sources, and other programs running. Compare average watts or total kWh over matching intervals, alongside stream stability and output quality. OBS guidance explains why these settings affect resource demands, but it does not provide test results for particular desktop configurations; any result applies to the equipment and method actually tested.
