Possibly—but there is no universal winner. If you already own the MacBook Air, compare its measured electricity use during playback with the cloud VM’s full bill for the same number of hours. Your result depends on the Mac’s actual power draw, your local electricity tariff, and the VM’s region, configuration, storage and network charges. A low hourly compute price alone does not show that a VM can reliably play a YouTube playlist.
How to compare the costs fairly
Use the same playback hours for both options. For the Mac, measure average power while the playlist is playing under the conditions you plan to use. For the VM, price the actual configuration and billed runtime, then include its other charges.
- Measure the Mac’s average power. Use a plug-in electricity monitor while the playlist plays with your intended screen brightness, browser, network connection and playback settings. Do not substitute the power adapter’s maximum rating or a newer MacBook Air’s specifications.
- Calculate the Mac’s electricity cost. If measured average draw is in watts, use:
cost = watts / 1000 × hours × tariff, where the tariff is your price per kilowatt-hour. Add charging or standby use only if you measure it or have another sound basis for estimating it. - Price the VM’s actual setup. Select the provider, region, operating system, instance, disk and networking you intend to use. Multiply billed runtime by the applicable rate, then add storage, data transfer, IP/network use and any other selected resources.
- Compare like with like. Use the same number of playback hours and a consistent billing period. Include a discount or free quota only if your account and workload qualify under its current terms.
This comparison treats the Mac as already owned and counts its electricity, not the purchase price, depreciation, maintenance or the cost of tying it up. If those matter to your decision, list them separately rather than treating them as electricity expense.
What the published price examples show—and don’t show
Cloud providers publish hourly compute examples, but those are not automatically all-in costs. Google Cloud’s pricing page displayed an e2-micro rate of $0.008376428 per hour under its default on-demand context when accessed on October 3, 2026. AWS’s T3 instance page displayed $0.0052 per hour for t3.nano and $0.0104 per hour for t3.micro when accessed on that date. These examples depend on region, configuration and pricing terms; check the provider’s current calculator for your intended setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS explains that instance charges accrue from launch until stop or termination, and that storage, data transfer and other resources may be billed separately. Google documents sustained-use discounts for eligible resources and an e2-micro Always Free quota subject to program conditions. Neither a discount nor free-tier eligibility should be assumed without checking the account, region and current terms.
Why an old Mac’s power draw must be measured
Apple’s 2019 environmental report lists idle, display-on measurements of 3.74 W, 3.81 W and 4.24 W for a tested 13-inch MacBook Air under the report’s test conditions. Those figures are not measurements of playlist playback and should not be applied to every older Air. Browser activity, screen brightness, network use, battery condition and attached displays can change what your own setup draws.

Measure the laptop in the configuration you will actually leave running. If you plan to connect an external monitor, include its consumption only if you are comparing the complete setup and can measure it. Apple’s report is useful as a model-specific idle reference, not a streaming estimate.

Cost is not proof that the VM can play the playlist
The hourly rates above establish compute-price examples, not that an e2-micro, t3.nano or t3.micro has enough resources or a suitable graphical environment for dependable browser playback. Before choosing a VM, verify that its operating system, available resources and playback setup can run the playlist as intended. The cited pricing and billing information does not establish playback performance or reliability for those configurations.

Which option is cheaper for your situation?
| Question | Already-owned MacBook Air | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Main cost to calculate | Measured average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × local electricity tariff | Applicable compute rate × billed runtime, plus storage, transfer and other selected resources |
| Inputs that can change the result | Actual Mac model and condition, screen brightness, browser and playback setup, electricity tariff | Provider, region, operating system, instance, disk, networking, billing option and any eligible discounts or quotas |
| What the available figures establish | Apple reports historical, model-specific idle measurements; they are not streaming measurements | Provider pages show hourly compute examples; they are not universal all-in quotations or proof of playback suitability |
The Mac is cheaper only if its measured electricity cost for the required hours is below the VM’s complete bill for equivalent use—and if it can meet your practical needs. Without your power reading, tariff and VM configuration, a precise break-even point cannot be calculated.
