Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Neither a Raspberry Pi 5 nor a cloud VM has a defensible universal cost advantage for a 24/7 YouTube stream. A Pi means hardware and accessories up front, plus power and a dependable home connection; a VM means a recurring compute charge and potentially significant outbound-data costs. At 5 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 1.62 decimal TB of video payload; at 14 Mbps, about 4.54 TB. Those estimates alone can exceed the transfer included with low-cost VM plans.
The right comparison is a total over a stated period, using your actual bitrate, electricity rate, VM region and transfer billing. Here is how to calculate it—and what each option requires.
What a 24/7 stream costs depends on more than the device or VM price
For a Raspberry Pi 5, separate any hardware you need to buy from ongoing electricity and internet costs. For a cloud VM, add compute, outbound transfer and any required storage, IP or software charges. An advertised VM monthly price is not a complete streaming bill unless its compute capacity and data terms suit your stream.
Compare the same operating period—such as the first 12 months—rather than placing a one-time board purchase beside a single month of VM charges. If you already own the Pi, show that separately from the cost of a new build. Count ordinary home broadband as an incremental expense only if streaming changes your plan or bill.

Use these formulas
- Local monthly electricity: measured average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × days × your local currency per kWh.
- Stream payload in decimal GB: bitrate in Mbps × 3,600 × streaming hours ÷ 8,000.
- Cloud monthly total: VM price + applicable outbound transfer + required storage, IP or software costs.
- Local total over N months: hardware not already owned + accessories + N × electricity and incremental internet cost.
For a useful estimate, measure the Pi system’s wall draw and use the VM provider’s regional pricing and transfer rules. The available figures here do not establish a typical electricity rate, a complete Pi build price, or the applicable transfer charges for a sustained stream, so they cannot support a universal winner.
How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p30. It also recommends constant bitrate encoding. At a constant bitrate for 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), the approximate payload is:

| Assumed bitrate | 30-day payload estimate | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1.62 decimal TB | Arithmetic estimate at a constant bitrate; not a provider invoice |
| 14 Mbps | About 4.54 decimal TB | Arithmetic estimate at a constant bitrate; not a provider invoice |
These estimates exclude possible protocol overhead and effects of restarts; providers may define and bill transfer differently. Use your encoder’s actual bitrate and confirm the VM region’s transfer allowance, overage rules and billing definitions before treating the compute price as the monthly total.
What the Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—tell you about local cost
Raspberry Pi 5 has a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 CPU but no hardware H.264 encoder; it uses libx264 software encoding. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2026 performance note reports real-time 1080p30 H.264 encoding under its tested settings. At low-latency settings, encoding could use as little as 60% of one CPU core; the high-quality preset used approximately 100–150% of one core in those tests. These are benchmark results, not a guarantee for every stream or a promise of continuous uptime.

Your result can vary with source footage, encoding preset, overlays, audio or video capture, software and thermal conditions. Network reliability and recovery after an interruption are separate operational questions. Use a representative test stream and monitor CPU load, temperature and YouTube stream health before relying on a particular setup.
Include a complete Pi build, not just the board
A Pi 5 needs boot media such as a microSD card; it has no onboard storage. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply rated at 5 V, 5 A. Its setup guidance says a 5 V, 3 A supply limits current available to peripherals to 600 mA. Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best performance. The exact accessories and cost depend on what you already have and the workload.

What a cloud VM plan includes—and what it does not establish
Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux bundle table lists these representative plans:
| Plan price | Memory | vCPUs | Storage | Transfer allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5/month | 0.5 GB | 2 | 20 GB | 1 TB |
| $7/month | 1 GB | 2 | 40 GB | 2 TB |
These are plan specifications, not evidence that either plan can encode your chosen stream. At the stated constant bitrates, the 5 Mbps 30-day payload estimate exceeds the $5 plan’s listed 1 TB allowance, and the 14 Mbps estimate exceeds the $7 plan’s listed 2 TB allowance. Actual charges depend on applicable regional transfer rules and overage billing, which you should verify.

AWS says Lightsail plans accrue hourly charges up to the monthly plan cap, with the least expensive plan starting at $0.0067 per hour ($5 per month). Stopping an instance does not stop charges; it must be deleted to end billing. That matters if you are experimenting or assume a stopped VM is free.
How to choose: compare the operating costs and risks that apply to you
- Already own a Pi? Calculate incremental electricity and any accessories or internet changes. Treat an existing board as sunk hardware only if it is genuinely available for this job.
- Buying a Pi for the stream? Include board, boot media, an appropriate power supply and any cooling you need, then spread that one-time cost over your planned operating period.
- Considering a VM? Check regional compute pricing, suitability for your encoder workload, included transfer and overage billing. Multiply your actual bitrate by planned hours rather than relying on the headline plan price.
- Need the stream to survive home outages? A Pi depends on your home power and internet connection. A VM removes the home connection from the streaming path, but does not by itself establish uninterrupted service or automatic recovery.
- Need a reliable continuous broadcast? Plan for monitoring, restarts and recovery regardless of where the encoder runs. Neither the Pi benchmark nor a VM plan price proves 24/7 uptime.
Configure the YouTube stream and plan for long runs
- Choose settings for the content and connection. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. A higher bitrate uses more outbound data.
- Set up the encoder destination. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Test a representative segment. YouTube advises testing representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health. A static image and a high-motion game capture may behave differently, so test the material you intend to run.
- Plan archive and restart handling. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, so decide how you will handle restarts and archive segmentation.
- Check rights and channel policies. Use footage, music and other material you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules, and repeated or reused content can also affect channel monetization under YouTube’s policies. Review the current rules for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous loop.
