The result is kilowatt-hours (kWh), also called electricity units. To estimate the added energy charge, multiply those units by the applicable marginal rate on your electricity tariff; the exact bill depends on your location, consumer category, slab and other charges.
Calculate the PC’s added electricity units
Use the PC’s average power draw while streaming—not the power supply’s maximum rated output. A plug-in power meter can measure draw at the wall; otherwise, use a clearly labelled estimate. Include a monitor, speakers or networking equipment only if you want their consumption included and they are not already part of the measurement.
- Find average watts: measure the PC at the wall during a representative streaming session, or enter an estimate.
- Count streaming hours: use the actual hours per day and the number of days in your billing period.
- Convert to units: multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000. One unit is 1 kWh. The Department of Electricity, Government of Puducherry, defines one unit as “1000 watt of electrical energy consumption in one hour” in its consumer guide High Electricity Bills: What You Can Do.
Formula: Units = average watts × streaming hours ÷ 1,000. For a billing period: average watts × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000.
Illustrative example
If a particular PC draws an average of 200 W at the wall and streams for 8 hours a day over 30 days, the calculation is 200 × 8 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 48 kWh, or 48 units. These are assumed inputs for arithmetic, not a measured PC, typical consumption figure or universal tariff estimate. The Puducherry guide recommends estimating appliance use from wattage and operating time, using 30 or 31 days for a monthly calculation.

Convert units into an estimated rupee cost
Multiply the added units by the energy rate that applies to the additional consumption on your connection. If the extra use moves your household into another consumption slab, the marginal rate may differ from the rate applied to earlier units. The result is an estimate of the energy-charge increment, not necessarily the change in the full bill.
- Check your latest bill or DISCOM tariff schedule for your consumer category, slab and applicable energy rate.
- Account separately for fixed charges, electricity duty or tax, meter charges and any subsidy that applies to your connection.
- If your connection is billed by time of day, check its actual rates and time windows before estimating the cost of streaming at particular hours.
India has no single domestic rupees-per-unit price that applies to every household. The Ministry of Power says tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize consumer classes. The Central Electricity Authority’s tariff compilation is a national reference; your latest local order and your own bill are the better basis for an estimate.

A June 2023 Ministry of Power release described solar-hour tariffs as 10–20% below normal tariffs and peak-hour tariffs as 10–20% above, with timings set by state commissions and applicability linked to smart-meter installation. These are figures in that policy explanation, not a guaranteed current schedule for every home. Check your DISCOM’s current tariff terms. Ministry of Power release on time-of-day tariffs.
Check your estimate against the bill
Compare your estimated added units with the change in meter readings or billed units across similar billing periods. The household meter records all connected loads, not just the streaming PC, so the PC calculation will not match the full household total by itself. Bill amounts can also change because of tariff or fixed-cost changes even when usage is similar; the Puducherry consumer guide recommends comparing units across periods.

You can also compare an estimate from watts × hours with a direct energy-meter reading over a representative session. A meter reading is useful when you want to account for actual workload and included peripherals; avoid counting devices twice if the meter already measures them together.
Why there is no standard “streaming PC” bill
PC power draw varies with the actual system and what it is doing. The official appliance-estimation guidance uses wattage and operating hours, but does not establish a universal wattage or monthly bill for YouTube streaming on a general-purpose PC. A power supply’s nameplate capacity is its rating, not a measurement of how much electricity the computer draws while streaming.

Keep comparisons fair by holding these inputs constant: measured average wall draw, hours streamed, whether peripherals are included, and the marginal tariff slab and time-of-day window. For an official example of an online appliance estimator, WBSEDCL’s energy-cost calculator accepts wattage and hours; it notes that its approximate cost excludes fixed charges and meter rent. Customers elsewhere should check whether their own DISCOM offers a similar tool.
