First, play the exact recording you plan to stream. If it already sounds distorted, fix or replace the source; lowering a streaming level cannot restore audio that was clipped during recording or editing. If the file sounds clean, trace the signal through playback, your audio device and encoder, reducing gain at the first point where distortion appears. Then make a test recording and check YouTube Live Control Room before the event.
Find where the clipping starts
Clipping is distortion caused when an audio signal exceeds what a stage in the signal path can handle. In a pre-recorded stream, that stage could be in the original file, playback software, an operating-system or device level, or the encoder mix. Work through the chain before adding filters: processing cannot reliably repair audio that is already damaged.
1. Listen to the original file
Play the exact media file intended for the stream through headphones or speakers at a reasonable listening level. Listen for harshness, crackling, or flattened-sounding peaks. If those are present in the file itself, re-edit or replace the source, or use an appropriate audio-repair workflow. A limiter is a peak ceiling, not a documented way to reconstruct clipped waveform detail; turning down the stream only makes the damaged sound quieter.
2. Trace the signal into OBS
If the file sounds clean, follow the route it takes to the encoder. Check playback-software volume and system volume, then the device or source feeding OBS, the OBS mixer meter, and a short local recording. Listen at the device and again in OBS. YouTube also identifies audio sources routed to an encoder as a possible cause of poor stream sound and recommends checking the encoder output and local archive. YouTube’s audio troubleshooting guidance and the OBS mixer guide describe these checks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Reduce level at the first overloaded point
Lower the playback, device, or source level where the distortion first appears. If the signal remains too high in OBS, adjust that source’s mixer fader and listen again. Start upstream rather than compensating for a hot input with later controls; downstream reduction cannot undo clipping that has already occurred.
Use OBS filters to manage peaks
Filters can help control clean audio with uneven loudness and prevent later peaks from exceeding a chosen ceiling. They are not a substitute for correcting an already distorted source or overloaded input.

Compressor for varying loudness
OBS describes compression as reducing louder signals to lower the likelihood of peaks above 0 dB. It is usually placed near the beginning of the filter chain, so it can act on the signal before later processing. Use it to manage occasional loud passages, not to disguise a gain problem at the source. See the OBS compressor filter documentation.
Limiter as the final peak ceiling
Place the limiter last in the filter chain so it constrains peaks after the preceding filters. OBS documents a default threshold of -6 dB; that is a software default, not a universal target for every program. Avoid adding makeup or output gain after the limiter that recreates overload. The OBS limiter documentation describes its peak-ceiling role; it does not claim to restore audio clipped earlier in the chain.

Check YouTube’s audio format settings
Correct audio format settings help YouTube ingest the encoder signal, but they do not fix excessive levels. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations list AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps for stereo, and 384 Kbps for 5.1. The recommended sample rates are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a cure for clipping. Check the current live encoder settings before an event, since platform specifications can change.
YouTube’s live error guidance also flags an unsupported codec, incorrect sample rate, or absent or multiple audio streams. If YouTube reports an audio-setting problem, verify codec, sample rate, bitrate, and the number of audio streams in the encoder configuration. See YouTube’s live stream error guidance.

Test the actual program before going live
- Use the same recording, playback software, audio route, and encoder settings planned for the event.
- Make a short local recording or test stream, then play it back and listen for distortion.
- Check the preview and status messages in YouTube Live Control Room before scheduling or starting the event.
- Use representative audio and movement in the test, and monitor stream quality during the encoder stream.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and checking the Live Control Room preview. Its encoder guidance covers test and configuration checks, and stream monitoring guidance explains monitoring quality during a stream.

| What you hear or see | Where to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The original media file is already distorted. | The source recording or prior edit. | Re-edit or replace the source, or use an appropriate repair workflow. A stream limiter is not documented as a restoration tool. |
| The original sounds clean, but OBS meter or local recording distorts. | Playback, system or device gain, source level, or the OBS mix. | Listen along the signal path and reduce gain at the first overloaded point. |
| The OBS recording sounds clean, but the YouTube stream sounds bad. | Encoder configuration or the signal routed to it. | Check encoder output, Live Control Room messages, and the local archive; compare with a test stream. |
| YouTube reports incorrect audio settings. | Ingestion format and encoder configuration. | Verify codec, sample rate, bitrate, and the number of audio streams against YouTube’s current requirements. |
For stream-side sound problems, YouTube recommends checking the encoder, live dashboard, CPU load, and local archive. If the source and local recording are clean, those checks help distinguish an encoder or delivery problem from clipping earlier in the chain.

Copyright and prerecorded content are separate checks
Fixing distortion does not establish that a program is cleared for live use. Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights to the recording and its music or other included material, and review YouTube’s live-stream rules and any notices shown in Live Control Room. Audio quality settings address signal delivery, not copyright permission.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the program is a prerecorded video intended to loop continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production tool. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
