YouTube Live 720p Bitrate Settings for Pre-Recorded Streams on a Slow Connection

For 720p live ingest, YouTube lists 8 Mbps recommended for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Learn how to account for upload headroom, test the encoder and lower resolution when bandwidth is limited.

For a pre-recorded video sent to YouTube as a live stream at 720p/30 fps, YouTube lists 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum for H.264, or 6 Mbps recommended and 2 Mbps minimum for AV1 or H.265. Those are live-ingest settings—not file-upload settings—and the listed minimum does not guarantee a stable stream. Check your outbound upload speed under realistic conditions, leave bandwidth headroom, and lower resolution if your connection cannot reliably carry the stream.

Choose the 720p live bitrate for your encoder

These figures are from YouTube Help’s live-encoder table, whose retrieved page does not state a publication or revision date. The values were checked on October 3, 2026.

Live resolution and frame rate Ingest codec Listed minimum Recommended bitrate
720p, 30 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps AV1 or H.265 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 60 fps H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 60 fps AV1 or H.265 2 Mbps 6 Mbps

The table lists the same bitrate values at 30 and 60 fps. Choosing 30 fps can be a practical lower-motion production choice, but YouTube’s table does not say that 30 fps reduces its recommended bitrate. Nor does it establish that one codec will deliver equal visual quality or solve an unstable connection.

Check whether a slow connection can carry the stream

Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve. Treat that reserve as a planning margin, not a stability guarantee: speed-test results can vary, and other devices or services sharing the connection can consume upstream capacity.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Test upload speed when the network is being used as it will be during the stream.
  • Account for other uploads and any concurrent stream or backup feed; include their bitrate when assessing the total load.
  • Compare the reliably available upload capacity—not just a best-case test result—with the encoder’s total stream bitrate and the 20% reserve.
  • If the connection cannot support the chosen resolution reliably, lower the resolution and test again. YouTube’s live table includes 480p/30 and 360p/30 options; use the values for your selected codec rather than assuming a universal threshold.

The published minimum is a table value, not a promise that a particular line will sustain the stream at that rate. A connection that fluctuates, or is shared with other traffic, can still cause interruptions.

Set up the live encoder and test the real video

  1. Choose the live workflow. If you want a pre-recorded video to appear as a live stream, play it through an encoder into a YouTube live event. YouTube’s live-ingest bitrate table applies to the stream sent by the encoder.
  2. Set the output. Select 720p and your intended frame rate, then choose the codec-specific bitrate from the table above. YouTube’s general live settings guidance specifies CBR encoding and RTMP or RTMPS transport; RTMPS is its recommended secure transport.
  3. Configure keyframes and audio. Set keyframes at a 2-second interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval is 60 frames. YouTube’s general settings list AAC or MP3 audio.
  4. Run a representative test before the event. Use the intended video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and network conditions. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the real stream; a quiet or static test may not reveal problems that occur during actual playback.
  5. Monitor the live session. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while the encoder is sending video. If YouTube reports an error, verify bitrate, supported settings, and keyframe frequency before changing unrelated equipment.

YouTube’s guidance identifies unsupported settings, incorrect bitrate, or wrong keyframe frequency as possible sources of stream errors. If the available upstream capacity is insufficient, its troubleshooting advice is to consider lowering resolution.

Do not use regular-upload bitrates for live ingest

“Pre-recorded” describes the source video, but when an encoder sends it to a live event, the relevant settings are YouTube’s live-ingest settings above. Uploading the same file as an ordinary YouTube video is a different workflow. YouTube’s upload recommendations list 720p SDR at 5 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those upload figures are not live-stream bitrate recommendations.
