Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Run FFmpeg under a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and set a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure. This makes systemd start FFmpeg during boot and relaunch it after an abnormal exit. It does not, by itself, guarantee that YouTube is receiving healthy video or recover every network interruption: those require separate checks and, where appropriate, FFmpeg output-recovery settings.
What systemd can—and cannot—restart
There are two separate jobs: starting the service when Linux boots, and restarting its process if FFmpeg later exits. Enable the unit for boot startup; set Restart=on-failure to handle abnormal exits. Neither setting detects every case where FFmpeg remains running but stops producing usable video.
| Mechanism | What it handles | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Enabled systemd service | Starts the configured service as part of the host’s boot service configuration. | That the source, network, credentials, or YouTube ingest are ready. |
systemd Restart=on-failure |
Restarts FFmpeg after a non-zero exit and specified abnormal outcomes. The systemd manual also describes restarts for signal termination (with listed exceptions), timeouts, and configured watchdog timeouts. | Recovery from every stalled stream or transient output failure while FFmpeg stays alive. |
| FFmpeg output recovery | May let a configured output recover from some temporary failures without the process exiting. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes attempt_recovery as especially useful with network output. |
Boot activation or a replacement for systemd process supervision. |
These are separate layers, not interchangeable fixes. HTTP input reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs; they are not generic recovery flags for an RTMP or RTMPS output. Check the documentation for the exact FFmpeg build and output configuration you use.
Before you create the service
- Confirm that FFmpeg works from the command line with the exact source and destination you intend to use. Check the installed version with
ffmpeg -version; distributions and builds can differ in supported options. - Find the absolute path to the FFmpeg executable and the media or input source. A service does not necessarily inherit your interactive shell’s
PATH, working directory, environment variables, or mounted files. - In YouTube Live Control Room, get the current stream URL and stream key, check the protocol, and review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Do not copy a real key into public examples, screenshots, logs, or source control.
- Decide which Linux account should run FFmpeg and verify that it can read the input and any required configuration. A camera or capture device that works for your login may not be accessible to the service account.
- Choose how credentials will be supplied and protected. Keep permissions restrictive; avoid putting a live key in a unit file readable by other users. A protected credential mechanism or tightly permissioned environment file may be more appropriate for your host.
Create a systemd unit
The example below shows the shape of a service, not a universally working FFmpeg command. Replace the illustrative paths and input/output arguments with the command that you have already validated. Supply the current YouTube URL and key through a protected method suited to your system; do not publish them in the unit.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube Live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /srv/stream/input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL is explanatory placeholder text, not a usable destination; provide the actual current ingest destination securely. The sample’s copy settings only make sense when the source codecs and stream requirements are compatible. If they are not, choose and test appropriate encoding settings instead. Do not assume -re, stream-copy, or any other option suits every live source.
Adapt the unit to your host
- Save the unit under a clear name such as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. Use the absolute FFmpeg path inExecStart=, the intendedUser=, and a validWorkingDirectory=. - Use
Wants=network-online.targetandAfter=network-online.targetwhere appropriate. These express ordering and a dependency relationship; they do not guarantee working internet access, DNS, a ready source, or a reachable YouTube ingest server. - Keep the long-running FFmpeg command directly in
ExecStart=when practical. If you need a wrapper, make sure systemd tracks the actual long-running process rather than a short-lived shell that exits while FFmpeg remains detached. - Use
RestartSec=10as a modest example delay, not a mandated value. A delay avoids immediate repeated attempts; choose one suited to your source and network behavior. - Use
Restart=on-failureas a sensible baseline for unexpected termination.Restart=alwaysis broader and can also restart a process that exits successfully, so select it only when that behavior is intentional.
Enable and test it
After saving the unit, use this systemctl workflow on a systemd-based Linux host. Run administrative commands with the privileges your distribution requires.

- Have systemd reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start the service through systemd:
sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check whether it loaded and is running:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Inspect recent service output:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. Review errors before enabling automatic retries if the command or source is wrong. - Enable boot startup:
sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service. To start it now and enable it for future boots in one operation, usesudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Where practical, validate reboot behavior on a staging or maintenance host. After reboot, check the service status and journal, then confirm the preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Live Control Room.
A running FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is receiving valid video. Check the local process and logs, verify that the input is available, and confirm stream health in Live Control Room. Pretest the stream where possible. YouTube’s encoder guidance says appropriate settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the requirements for your actual stream rather than treating one command as universal.
Choose the right recovery layer
When FFmpeg exits
systemd can restart the service after a failure according to its policy. The on-failure policy covers non-zero exits and specified abnormal outcomes; consult the systemd manual installed on your host for the details and exceptions. systemd also applies start-rate limiting. If repeated attempts hit that limit, inspect the service logs and correct the underlying failure rather than simply weakening the limit.

When the output connection fails but FFmpeg stays alive
A service restart policy acts on process outcomes; it does not necessarily act on a broken output connection inside a still-running process. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers output recovery controls including attempt_recovery. Evaluate those options against the installed FFmpeg version and the exact muxer and destination you use. In-process recovery can help with some temporary output failures, but it is not equivalent to systemd restarting a crashed process.
When the input is an HTTP stream
FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options concern HTTP protocol input, including streamed inputs. Use them only for the relevant HTTP input behavior. Do not apply or describe input flags such as -reconnect as generic RTMP/RTMPS output recovery.

When the stream is unhealthy but the process remains up
Neither an enabled unit nor a process-exit restart policy proves that the video is advancing or that YouTube accepts it. Monitor the encoder and the Live Control Room stream-health indicators. If you need automatic action for a process that remains alive while output is stalled, that requires a health-check strategy in addition to a basic systemd restart policy.

- The unit is missing or failed to load: check the unit name and location, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then inspectsudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand the journal. - FFmpeg exits immediately: read the journal for executable-path errors, invalid arguments, permission problems, missing environment variables, or an inaccessible working directory. Run the validated command with the same account and environment as the service where possible.
- The source cannot be opened: confirm that the media file, playlist, device, mount, or upstream URL is available after reboot and readable by
User=. Interactive-session access does not guarantee service-account access. - The destination rejects the connection: check that the stream key is current and that the ingest URL and protocol match the values in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises using a new key and updating the encoder if startup fails because of a key problem.
- The service is active but the broadcast is not healthy: confirm the preview and health status in Live Control Room. A live process alone does not show that valid media is reaching YouTube.
- It restarts repeatedly or stops trying: inspect exit status and logs for the original fault. Rapid restarts can obscure a bad command, inaccessible source, or invalid key; systemd start-rate limiting may also prevent further starts until addressed.
- It works locally but not immediately after boot: remember that network-online ordering is not a guarantee of usable DNS, internet, source availability, or ingest readiness. Use a suitable delay and recovery behavior for the relevant input or output, and monitor the stream rather than assuming the network is ready.
Plan for stream duration and archiving
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That platform behavior is separate from server reboot recovery: it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast or successful relaunch after a host failure. Check current YouTube guidance and your stream settings when planning longer sessions.
