There is no universal cheaper option. The answer depends on whether you mean replaying videos for viewing or broadcasting prerecorded material as a continuous YouTube Live stream—and, for a desktop-versus-VM cost comparison, on your hardware price, measured power use, electricity tariff, VM region, storage, and network use. If you only want to repeat a video while watching, YouTube already has a Loop control; you may not need either a dedicated desktop or a VM.
First, define what “looping YouTube videos” means
Repeat a video while you watch
YouTube’s player can loop an individual video or a playlist on a computer. Open the video, right-click inside the player, and choose Loop. This repeats playback in the player; it does not create a live broadcast. YouTube’s instructions are at Loop videos or playlists on YouTube.
Keep a remote browser playing
A cloud VM can host a browser for remote playback, but that is a different job from running a small compute instance for a lightweight server task. A browser and operating system may need more resources than a low-end shared-core VM provides. No browser-performance or reliability test establishes a suitable VM size here.
Broadcast prerecorded videos as YouTube Live
A continuous live broadcast of uploaded videos is a playout workflow, not YouTube’s player loop. A desktop or VM would need to run broadcasting software and send the stream to YouTube. A cloud playout service is another category: it can run uploaded videos without requiring your home computer to remain on. Do not compare its price or capabilities as though they were the same as a player’s repeat control.

What the Google Cloud example actually costs
Google Cloud’s general-purpose pricing page lists an e2-micro on-demand compute rate of $0.008376428 per hour in USD. At an illustrative 730 hours of runtime, multiplying that rate by the hours gives approximately $6.11 per month for compute alone. This is a calculation from the listed hourly rate, not a quoted monthly bill; check the current price for your region and consumption model at Google Cloud’s general-purpose VM pricing page.
That compute figure is not an all-in cost. Google Cloud charges for resources such as storage and networking separately, so disk and network charges may increase the bill. Consult Google Cloud VM pricing and its calculator for a deployment-specific estimate.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The e2-micro is also a constrained shared-core reference point, not a demonstrated desktop equivalent for continuous browser playback. Google’s machine documentation describes it as having 1 GiB of memory, two guest-visible vCPUs, and 0.25 fractional vCPU capacity; shared-core machines time-share physical CPU resources. See Google Cloud’s machine-family specifications.
How to compare the desktop and VM fairly
Pick the same time horizon and the same task for both options. For example, do not compare a desktop broadcasting a live stream with a VM that merely hosts a browser playing a video. Include the costs and resources each setup actually needs.

| Cost or requirement | Refurbished desktop | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Base cost | Purchase price, spread across the useful life you expect to get from it | Hourly compute rate multiplied by hours running, for the selected machine type and region |
| Power or storage | Measured average power draw, including the monitor if it stays on, multiplied by runtime and your local electricity tariff | Disk charges for the storage you provision and keep |
| Network | Include any relevant connection cost; keep the actual workload in view | Include applicable network or outbound-data charges |
| Other costs | Maintenance and any required software or license | Any applicable software or license |
| Operational considerations | Whether you can leave the machine and, if needed, its monitor running; restart and recovery expectations | Machine size, region, runtime, and restart and recovery expectations |
Calculate the desktop’s energy cost
For continuous use, estimate energy in kilowatt-hours as average watts × hours ÷ 1000. Multiply the result by your local price per kWh. Use a measured average draw for the setup you will actually leave running; a monitor left on can change the result. Add the hardware purchase cost and any maintenance or software costs for your chosen comparison period.
Calculate the VM’s total
Multiply the selected VM’s hourly compute rate by its actual runtime, then add disk, network, and applicable software costs. Choose a machine type and region appropriate to the workload rather than assuming the e2-micro is sufficient for a browser or continuous broadcast. For a region-specific estimate, use Google’s pricing pages and calculator before deploying.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Decide whether the result is cheaper
Compare both totals over the same period. The desktop’s upfront purchase price may be spread over its expected useful life, while its power cost recurs as it runs. VM compute, storage, and network charges accrue according to the resources and usage you select. Without a particular refurbished price, measured power draw, local tariff, VM configuration, and region, neither option can be declared cheaper in general.

If your aim is simply to watch a video repeatedly, use YouTube’s Loop feature rather than paying to keep a separate machine running. If you need an always-on live broadcast of uploaded videos, compare a desktop or VM broadcasting setup with a cloud playout service. Those options differ in what they do: player looping is viewing; live playout sends a broadcast to YouTube.
