To stream a 4K video at 1080p, scale the output to 1920×1080, preserve the source’s aspect ratio, and send it to YouTube Live with a supported codec and a bitrate your connection can sustain. You can do this in OBS or with FFmpeg. Resizing changes the stream output; it does not alter your original 4K file.
Before you resize: check the video and the stream
Check the source’s frame dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio tracks, and whether the video plays correctly from beginning to end. Those details determine the output settings and help you catch missing audio or unexpected black bars before a live stream.
- Dimensions and aspect ratio: A standard 16:9 4K video scales directly to 1920×1080. If the source uses a different aspect ratio, decide whether to preserve the full picture with bars, crop part of the picture, or use a different output canvas. Do not stretch it to 16:9; that distorts the image.
- Frame rate: Match the source where practical. Use 30 fps for a 30 fps source or 60 fps for a 60 fps source if your system and connection can handle it.
- Audio: Confirm the intended audio track is present and audible. Test with representative audio and movement, as YouTube recommends.
- Connection: Your upload must sustain the chosen stream bitrate, with headroom for normal fluctuations. A bitrate that exceeds your reliable upload capacity can cause stream-health problems.
Choose YouTube Live ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube also specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for current requirements and codec-specific ranges.
For H.264, YouTube recommends these ingest bitrates. The alternative ranges shown are for AV1/H.265, not universal values for every codec.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | H.264 recommended ingest bitrate | AV1/H.265 displayed range |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 4–10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, not a guarantee of the bitrate viewers receive. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Keep the distinction in mind when evaluating the stream: your encoder sends an ingest feed, while YouTube controls viewer playback renditions.
Resize in OBS
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. OBS uses this as the output resolution for the stream or recording, applying the selected downscale filter.
- Choose a downscale filter. The best choice depends on the source and encoding; inspect the result rather than assuming one filter is always superior.
- Set the frame rate to match the source or the intended output. If you choose 60 fps, test in advance: OBS notes that 60 fps can put more load on the system than 30 fps.
- In Settings > Output, configure the encoder, bitrate, and CBR mode to match YouTube’s current guidance for your selected codec and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds.
- For a source that is not 16:9, decide how to fit it onto the output canvas: preserve the entire frame with empty space or bars, crop it, or choose a different canvas. Do not stretch the image to fill the canvas.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream, check image, audio, and YouTube’s stream-health messages, then correct any problems before relying on the live setup.
The overall output resolution is different from an individual source’s filter. OBS’s output scaling guide covers scaled output; its Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter documentation describes adjustments to a particular source.

Resize with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s scale filter can constrain output dimensions while preserving the input aspect ratio. A 16:9 4K source scaled to 1920×1080 is halved in each dimension. For a source with another aspect ratio, preserve the full image and then decide whether to pad or crop if the final canvas must be exactly 1920×1080. Avoid setting both dimensions in a way that stretches the source.
Consult the official FFmpeg scale filter documentation for its dimensions, aspect-ratio options, scaler algorithms, and pixel-format behavior. Scaling quality depends on the source and encoding choices; no single scaler is guaranteed to produce the best result for every video.

There is no universal FFmpeg loop-and-stream command that fits every file and setup. The right command depends on the input’s container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Configure those parts for your actual file and workflow, and never publish or share your stream key. If you use FFmpeg to send the live stream, test the complete path, including the loop behavior, before relying on it.
Test the loop and watch stream health
- Run a test using representative motion and audio. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check that the picture is 1920×1080 without stretching, unwanted cropping, or unexpected bars.
- Listen for missing, distorted, or out-of-sync audio.
- Verify that the video returns to the intended point when it reaches the end. Loop controls depend on the player or encoder workflow; the scaling and encoder guidance above does not prescribe a single loop command.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and the live event. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate to a value your connection can sustain and test again.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Image looks stretched | The output dimensions changed the source aspect ratio. | Preserve the aspect ratio; use bars/padding, cropping, or a different canvas instead of stretching. |
| Picture is soft or unexpectedly cropped | Scaling filter or source-to-canvas fit is unsuitable. | Review the downscale filter and fit choice, then inspect the output at full size. |
| Stream health reports instability | The upload cannot reliably sustain the configured bitrate, or the system cannot encode consistently. | Use a sustainable bitrate, check system load (especially at 60 fps), and test again with the intended content. |
| Viewers cannot hear the video | The wrong audio track is selected, audio is absent, or output routing is misconfigured. | Confirm the source audio and output track, then test by listening to the live or recorded output. |
| Live stream ends instead of looping | The selected player or encoder workflow is not configured to repeat the input. | Verify that workflow’s loop behavior separately from its scaling settings; loop syntax varies with the media and command. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube Live stream without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo handles the loop from the cloud. The steps are: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
