A Mac mini’s monthly electricity cost depends on its actual average power draw and your electricity tariff; a VPS costs its monthly plan price plus any required storage or outbound-transfer overages. Compare the two only after checking that the VPS can sustain your chosen stream settings. Apple’s published power figures are reference specifications, not measurements of a Mac mini encoding a 24/7 YouTube stream.
Calculate the Mac mini’s electricity cost
Use average wall power under the workload you intend to run, if you can measure it. The calculation is:
Monthly kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per monthMonthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × your local price per kWh
For a 30-day month, 24 hours a day means 720 hours. For example, a constant 4 W load uses 2.88 kWh; a constant 65 W load uses 46.8 kWh. These are arithmetic scenarios based on Apple’s published idle and maximum figures for the 2024 M4 Mac mini, not predicted streaming consumption. Multiply the resulting kWh by your tariff to get an electricity estimate.

A plug-in energy meter can provide a more relevant average for your setup. Measure the complete equipment you want included: the Mac mini alone, or also a display, external storage, router and other network equipment. If you cannot measure, present a range using model-specific published figures as scenarios—not as a measured or expected bill. Apple lists different figures for different models and configurations; do not apply one model’s numbers to another. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications list the 2024 M4 at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum, and the 2023 M2 at 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum.
Estimate the VPS cost without mistaking a starting price for a solution
A VPS bill is not comparable to an electricity estimate unless you state what each total includes. For each candidate VPS, record its region, recurring monthly price, CPU, memory, storage, included outbound transfer and charges for exceeding that transfer. Also verify that its resources support your actual encoding software and chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate over a sustained run.

As a price example, AWS Lightsail lists a Linux/Unix public-IPv4 entry bundle at $5 USD per month with 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. This is a plan and price example, not proof that the entry bundle can encode a particular stream continuously. Check current availability and terms on AWS Lightsail pricing.
Transfer limits can change the economics. AWS says outbound transfer above the included allowance is subject to overage. DigitalOcean documents included outbound transfer for Droplets and $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer; its bandwidth documentation was verified on 2026-09-14. Check the current plan-specific allowance and rate before estimating a recurring bill. DigitalOcean’s Droplet bandwidth pricing documentation describes those terms.

Compare equivalent workloads and costs

To calculate a defensible total, define a comparison period and include the same categories on both sides. If you exclude the Mac mini’s purchase cost, home internet, backups or maintenance, say so. The available published figures do not establish a break-even period: that would require a purchase price, measured power draw, local tariff, a workload-suitable VPS price and a defined horizon. There is no head-to-head benchmark here for uptime, encoding performance or total cost.
Check that either setup can deliver the stream
Cost matters only if the chosen machine or VPS can run the workload and provide a stable feed to YouTube. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings depend on resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264, its examples include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for the recommendations applicable to your format.

These recommendations do not prove that a particular Mac mini or VPS can encode and send the stream reliably. For a home setup, check sustained upload capacity at the selected bitrate. For a VPS, verify encoding capability as well as transfer allowance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery from encoder to YouTube; this is ingest traffic, not viewer playback traffic. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, so this comparison concerns the encoder feed sent to YouTube rather than hosting viewer playback on the Mac mini or VPS. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health.

- A Mac mini may make sense if you already own a suitable model, can keep the computer and home connection available, and its measured power cost works for your tariff.
- A VPS may make sense if a plan you have verified can sustain the encoding workload and its price, transfer allowance and overage exposure fit your budget.
- Neither estimate is complete by itself if one side includes only electricity and the other includes a server plan, or if you omit equipment, connectivity, storage or operating costs from only one side.
