Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a typical 24/7 YouTube Live stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 over RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 44.1 kHz. Treat those as live-stream settings, not a universal export recipe for the source file: the encoder or cloud service sends a live feed to YouTube, and its ingest settings are distinct from YouTube’s recommendations for uploaded videos.
Recommended settings for a 24/7 YouTube stream
Use the source video’s native resolution and frame rate where practical. For many continuous streams, 1080p30 is a useful balance of detail, smoothness, and bandwidth. Choose a lower or higher setting according to the content, the encoder’s capabilities, and the stability of your upload connection.
| Setting | Practical starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | Use 720p if bandwidth or encoding capacity is constrained; consider 60 fps for fast motion, or higher resolutions when the content and connection justify them. |
| Video codec and protocol | H.264 over RTMPS | YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; use them only if your encoder supports them and you follow the applicable YouTube settings. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Stereo audio | AAC, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | For 5.1 surround, YouTube lists AAC over RTMP/RTMPS, 48 kHz, and 384 kbps. |
These audio and video values come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. Its bitrate table gives codec-specific recommendations, not guarantees or universal minimums. Confirm the current row for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating a recommendation as a hard requirement.
What resolution should I use for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Pick a resolution that suits the source and that your connection can sustain continuously. A 1080p stream preserves more detail than 720p, while 1440p or 2160p requires substantially more capacity. Upscaling a lower-resolution source does not create detail that was not in the original.

| H.264 live ingest format | YouTube’s recommended video bitrate | Typical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Lower data and encoding demands; a reasonable choice when the source or connection does not warrant 1080p. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Can preserve smoother fast motion at 720p. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | Useful general starting point for many continuous streams. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | More bandwidth for smoother motion at 1080p. |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | Use when the source has useful extra detail and the connection can sustain it. |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | Higher detail and motion require substantially more capacity. |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 4K at 30 fps; choose only when justified by the source and stable bandwidth. |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 4K at 60 fps; the most demanding option in this selection. |
The figures are YouTube’s published H.264 live-ingest recommendations, not a promise of picture quality. Other codecs may have different requirements. Check the current YouTube encoder table for your exact format before configuring an encoder.
Should the stream be 30 or 60 fps?
For static art, slides, a fixed scene, or slow-moving ambient footage, 30 fps is generally enough. Fast gameplay, sports, or other rapid motion can look smoother at 60 fps, but 60 fps raises the bitrate and processing demands. YouTube supports up to 60 fps; avoid generating extra frames merely to select a higher number if the source does not benefit.

When possible, keep the source and outgoing stream frame rates aligned. Converting between rates can alter motion cadence, and the result depends on the material and encoder. Test representative motion rather than judging a configuration from a still frame.
Is 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz better for YouTube Live?
For stereo live audio, use 44.1 kHz AAC at YouTube’s listed recommended 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround, YouTube’s live guidance specifies AAC over RTMP or RTMPS, 48 kHz, and 384 kbps. Match the setting to the channel layout you are sending.

Do not confuse this with YouTube’s separate video-upload encoding guidance, which recommends 48 kHz for uploaded files. That upload recommendation does not replace the live encoder guidance. If a source file is 48 kHz but the live feed is stereo at 44.1 kHz, check how your streaming application handles resampling.
Configure the source file and live encoder separately
A prerecorded file’s export settings describe that file. They do not, by themselves, determine the video and audio settings YouTube receives during a live stream. A streaming application or cloud encoder reads the file and sends a live feed using its own output settings. Configure and verify that outgoing feed against YouTube’s live encoder guidance; do not treat a container such as MP4 as a YouTube Live requirement unless your chosen tool requires it.

- Inspect the source. Note its resolution, frame rate, and audio layout and sample rate. Prefer an output that does not needlessly upscale or invent frames.
- Set the encoder output. Choose the target resolution and frame rate, H.264 over RTMPS if that is your chosen supported setup, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Set audio for the layout. For stereo, select AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1, use the live settings YouTube lists for that layout.
- Set bitrate from YouTube’s current table. Match codec, resolution, and frame rate. Leave capacity beyond the video bitrate rather than sizing the connection exactly to the table value.
- Test the complete stream. Test with audio and motion similar to the real programme, check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor the connection during a representative run.
- Arrange a local recording if you need an archive. Confirm that the recording is being created and that its file continues to grow. Choose storage according to the actual recording bitrate and retention period.
Allow upload headroom for a continuous stream
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload headroom. A connection provisioned to exactly match the video bitrate leaves no room for audio, protocol overhead, normal variation, or a backup feed. Treat headroom as a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. For a 24/7 operation, check that upload capacity remains stable over time, not just in a brief speed test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy of a continuous stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends recording a local archive as backup. If keeping the full programme matters, record it locally and verify the recording while the stream is running.

Troubleshooting common setting problems
- YouTube reports an unstable or poor stream health status: Check sustained upload capacity, encoder bitrate, and any competing network traffic. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected output; retain headroom.
- The image stutters or motion looks uneven: Compare the source and outgoing frame rates, check whether the encoder can sustain the selected resolution and frame rate, and test with representative motion. Use 30 fps if 60 fps adds load without a visible benefit.
- The picture looks soft or blocky: Confirm that the source actually contains the detail you expect, that the outgoing resolution is correct, and that the bitrate matches the current YouTube recommendation for the chosen codec and format.
- Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync: Check that the encoder is sending the intended audio device or track and that its channel layout, sample rate, and codec match the configured output. If resampling from the source file, verify the application’s handling.
- The stream stops or reconnects repeatedly: Check encoder and network stability and inspect YouTube Live Control Room stream health. Test recovery behavior before relying on the setup unattended.
- The live stream is missing from the archive: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when preservation matters, and verify that it is being written.
