Can OBS Play ProRes Files in a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, with a compatibility check. OBS supports MOV media sources, and its format guide lists ProRes in MOV and MKV containers. That does not guarantee that every ProRes profile will decode in every OBS installation. For one file, use OBS’s Media Source and enable Loop; for a playlist, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled and VLC installed. OBS then encodes the playback into a format YouTube Live accepts—ProRes is the source-file codec, not a documented YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest codec.

Will a ProRes file play in OBS?

OBS lists .mov among Media Source file types, and its media-format guide lists ProRes in MOV and MKV containers. Container support and codec decoding are separate checks: the extension alone cannot establish that a particular file will play. ProRes profile, file integrity, operating system, and the decoders available in the installed OBS or VLC build can affect playback. Check the actual file in the installation you plan to use before relying on it for a continuous stream. See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS supported media formats.

FFmpeg documents ProRes encoding and decoding, but that does not prove which FFmpeg version or configuration is included with a particular OBS or VLC package. If OBS cannot play the file, test it in VLC and check whether the file itself is intact; do not assume that all applications share the same decoder support. The FFmpeg general documentation describes its ProRes support.

Choose the OBS source for one file or a playlist

Loop a single ProRes file with Media Source

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
  2. Select the local video file and enable Loop.
  3. Confirm the preview shows both picture and audio, and that playback restarts when it reaches the end.

Media Source is the simpler choice when you want one file to repeat. OBS documents that its Loop option restarts the file after playback completes. If the preview is blank or silent, test the same file outside the intended live session before troubleshooting the stream output.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Repeat several files with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS guide says 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the files you want to play in sequence.
  3. Check that Loop Playlist is enabled; OBS documents it as on by default.
  4. Play through the playlist in the OBS preview and verify the transition from the final item back to the first.

VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and is the relevant OBS source for a multi-file playlist. OBS documents its availability on Windows, macOS, and Linux when VLC is installed. Exact menus can vary by OBS version; use the source’s properties and confirm the setting in your installed build. See OBS’s media source documentation.

Set OBS output for YouTube Live

OBS decodes the ProRes file locally, then encodes the outgoing live stream. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS ingest settings list H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1 video—not ProRes—and AAC or MP3 audio. Use an output codec supported by your OBS encoder and YouTube’s ingest settings; do not try to send the source file’s ProRes bitrate as the live output bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its documented video guidance supports up to 60 frames per second. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you want to stream and the upload capacity available. Consult the current YouTube Live encoder settings for the applicable resolution and frame-rate recommendations.

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a password: enter it only in OBS’s stream settings and do not publish it.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key as the interface allows.
  3. Open Settings > Output and select a YouTube-supported encoder and output settings appropriate to the intended stream. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  4. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to deliver; verify the encoder and bitrate settings are suitable for them and for your sustained upload connection.
  5. Start with a private or unlisted test stream. Check the YouTube preview, stream health, picture, audio, and playlist looping before making the stream public.

Menu names and available encoders can vary across OBS builds and operating systems. YouTube advises testing before a live event and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality; do not treat a looping source as a guarantee that the host, network, or stream will remain healthy indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Plan for 24/7 operation, archives, and DVR

A loop only controls what the media source does after playback reaches its end. A local OBS stream also depends on the computer staying on, OBS continuing to run, the file and source remaining available, the network connection, and YouTube ingest staying healthy. Monitor the Live Control Room and the host machine rather than assuming that the playlist will recover from every interruption.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR may be limited or unavailable, so one uninterrupted 24/7 stream should not be treated as a guaranteed complete archive or a stream with full rewind. If viewers need dependable archives or rewind, consider scheduled, shorter segments instead of one continuous stream. That is an operational choice based on YouTube’s stated limits, not a requirement. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • OBS accepts the MOV but shows no picture: MOV container support does not guarantee the installed decoder can handle that ProRes profile. Test the exact file in the installed VLC/OBS combination, confirm the file is intact, and verify the OBS and VLC architectures match.
  • The playlist stops at the last item: Open VLC Video source properties and confirm the playlist is populated and Loop Playlist is enabled. Test the wrap from last item to first in the preview.
  • Video plays but audio is missing: Check that the file has an audio track, that the source is not muted, and that OBS’s audio meters move during playback. Confirm audio in the test stream before going public.
  • YouTube does not accept the outgoing stream: Confirm OBS is using a YouTube-supported ingest codec, CBR, and an allowed keyframe interval, and that the stream key is current and entered correctly. The incoming ProRes source codec is not the encoder setting for YouTube.
  • The stream drops or becomes unhealthy: Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, OBS status, sustained upload capacity, and the host computer. A looping file cannot correct a network, encoder, host, or ingest failure.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far back or the archive is incomplete: For a stream exceeding 12 hours, YouTube warns DVR may be limited or unavailable; automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Shorten and segment streams if archive or rewind coverage matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded recording or playlist to keep playing while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the computer and home connection out of the always-on setup, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Start the free first day.
