A “400” error in OBS does not point to one universal YouTube RTMP problem. First note exactly where it appears and what you were doing. If OBS reports an error as a third-party encoder starts, YouTube recommends creating a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating OBS. If the message mentions SSL or a timeout, check the RTMPS URL and connection settings instead.
First identify which kind of error you have
Before changing settings, record the complete error text, the screen where it appears, and the action that immediately preceded it. A numeric 400 alone is not enough to diagnose the cause: an account-linking dialog, an API setup response, an encoder startup failure, and an SSL or network timeout are different failure layers.
- Browser or account-linking window: capture the full message and identify the login or authorization action.
- YouTube API broadcast or stream setup: record the API operation and response text; API 400 responses can refer to missing or invalid fields for a particular request.
- OBS Start Streaming: follow the encoder-startup checks below.
- SSL, timeout, dropped frames, or disconnection: use the transport and network checks below. These symptoms are not interchangeable with an API 400.
YouTube documents request-specific 400 errors in its Live Streaming API error reference; that does not mean an RTMP ingest failure has the same cause.
If OBS fails when you start streaming
For an error starting a third-party encoder, YouTube’s recommended first fix is to create a new stream key in Live Control Room, then replace the saved key in the encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the intended live stream.
- Copy a new stream key using YouTube’s stream setup. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Confirm the service is YouTube, then update the stream key. If you use a custom server setting, verify the server URL against the Live Control Room.
- Apply the change and try Start Streaming again. Make sure the key and server URL belong to the scheduled or current broadcast you intend to use.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends a new key when a third-party encoder has trouble starting. Its encoder setup instructions also explain that the encoder needs the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
If the message says SSL error or connection timed out
- In the Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS server URL provided for the stream. Do not assume the default RTMP URL is RTMPS; verify the protocol at the start of the address.
- In OBS, go to Settings > Stream and check the server selection or custom server URL. Use the exact RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube.
- If YouTube reports an SSL error even with the correct RTMPS URL, its help guidance suggests specifying port 443. Follow the available server-field format and instructions for your setup rather than appending a port blindly.
- Retry the connection. If it still fails, preserve the exact error text and the URL format (but never publish your stream key).
The YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting page covers SSL errors and timeouts. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies TLS over port 443 and requires the hostname for SNI authentication.

If the real problem is dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
These symptoms usually call for network and bitrate troubleshooting, not an assumption that a 400 response has been fixed. OBS notes that dropped frames are unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself; check the connection path and available upload capacity.
- Try another ingest server if the service exposes a choice of servers.
- Lower the output bitrate to fit your stable upload speed. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed, but this is only a starting point, not a guarantee; YouTube’s limits for the chosen resolution and frame rate still apply.
- Review OBS network options and retry after changing one setting at a time so you can identify what helped.
- Check software interference: security software, VPNs, and bundled network-optimization tools can affect connections. Test carefully and restore appropriate security protections after troubleshooting.
- Contact your ISP if the connection remains unstable after these checks.
See OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. Its advice concerns connection instability and dropped frames; it is not a universal fix for an API or encoder 400.

If the error appears during account linking or API setup
Do not reset stream keys or change RTMPS settings until you know whether the error came from a browser login, authorization flow, or API request. Save the full response and note the specific action. YouTube’s API reference lists distinct 400 classes, including required and invalidValue for particular methods and resource fields. The applicable remedy depends on the request and fields involved; those API errors do not establish the cause of an OBS ingest failure.
Check whether the channel is ready to go live
Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel in YouTube Studio. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so a newly enabled channel may not be able to start immediately. Check the channel’s live-stream status before repeatedly changing OBS settings. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

When the usual checks do not resolve it
Collect the details that distinguish the possible causes before seeking help:
- The full error text and a screenshot of the screen where it appears.
- The action immediately before the error, such as authorizing an account, configuring a broadcast, or clicking Start Streaming.
- Whether the error is an API response, an SSL/timeout message, or an OBS connection/disconnection symptom.
- Whether you created a new stream key and verified the matching server URL and protocol.
Keep stream keys private when sharing screenshots or logs. If the error is still ambiguous, the exact screen and wording are more useful than the number 400 by itself.
