VALORANT Player Reports Ban After Buying a Used CPU—not a GPU

A player’s reported VALORANT ban after buying a used Ryzen CPU is not publicly confirmed by Riot. Here’s how it differs from Riot’s documented HWID restrictions.

A VALORANT player says they lost access after buying a secondhand AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU, according to reports by Tom’s Hardware and PCWorld. The reports do not identify a GPU, and Riot has not publicly confirmed this individual case in the sources available. Riot does document account- and hardware-ID-level restrictions, but that policy does not prove the player’s explanation or show that a previous owner’s cheating automatically gets a new owner banned.

What the secondhand-hardware reports say

Tom’s Hardware and PCWorld relay a German player’s claim that they bought a used Ryzen 7 5800X3D and then could not play VALORANT because the hardware was associated with enforcement against a previous owner. This is an account reported by those publications, not a publicly confirmed Riot case or an independently inspectable ban record.

The component detail matters: the coverage identifies a CPU, not a GPU. The sources do not establish that Riot flagged a graphics-card serial number, identify which device identifier was involved, or show that used GPUs generally create ban risks.

What Riot says about Vanguard restrictions

Riot describes Vanguard as anti-cheat and security software designed to block cheat software and detect cheat hardware. Its support guidance on cheating says use of auto-clickers, aimbots, or other unauthorized hardware or software that provides an unfair advantage can lead to a permanent account ban. It also says queuing with cheaters can result in a 180-day ban.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Riot’s developer explanation of its anti-cheat approach describes several layers: designing the game to resist cheats, making cheat development more difficult, and detecting and removing cheaters through Vanguard, hardware bans, player reports, data analysis, and machine-learning research.

In a separate Vanguard security update, Riot explains that a VAN:Restriction can block launch until required security features are enabled or motherboard firmware is updated. Riot says these restrictions can be applied at the account or hardware-ID (HWID) level when it detects suspicious hardware behavior or statistical anomalies. It also cautions that a restriction does not necessarily mean Riot suspects the player of cheating: the system configuration may resemble configurations used to bypass security.

Account bans and hardware restrictions are different

Riot’s support material describes permanent account bans for cheating; its security update describes restrictions at account or HWID level that may stop the game from launching. Those are distinct enforcement descriptions. The existence of HWID restrictions makes the reported scenario conceivable in general, but it does not confirm why this player was blocked or establish that a particular CPU or GPU was the cause.

What is known—and not known—about ban duration

Tom’s Hardware reports that Riot anti-cheat specialist Phillip Koskinas said VALORANT HWID bans are specific to the game and last no more than four months. That duration is reported secondhand in this coverage; the Riot support and security pages cited above do not state it as a general support policy. It should not be treated as a guarantee about an individual restriction or every type of enforcement.

How common are cheating bans?

In a 2024 VALORANT anti-cheat year-in-review, Riot said it had banned more than 3.6 million accounts for cheating during the game’s first four years—about one ban every 37 seconds over that period. Riot noted that this total excludes other actions involving botting, boosting, or intentionally queuing with cheaters. The same article says 4% of VALORANT cheating bans were eventually reversed because the account had been compromised; that figure is about account compromise, not mistaken hardware bans. Riot has not provided a prevalence figure for bans inherited through secondhand components.

What to do if Vanguard blocks your PC

  1. Read the exact client message. Riot says a restriction related to system integrity will tell you what security feature or firmware change is required. Record the full text or take a screenshot.
  2. Follow the message and manufacturer guidance. If it requests a security setting or firmware update, use the instructions for your motherboard or PC model rather than guessing at a fix.
  3. Contact Riot Support. Include the error, relevant account notification, purchase record if the PC or component was secondhand, and any support correspondence. Ask Riot to review your specific restriction.
  4. Do not replace parts based on speculation. The public sources do not establish that swapping a CPU, GPU, or PC removes a restriction, and changing hardware is not a documented remedy.

Do not try to evade a restriction with another account or speculative hardware changes. Riot directs affected players toward the instructions shown by Vanguard and support review.
