What Is the Opus Audio Codec? A Guide for Streamers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opus is a lossy audio codec standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for interactive speech and audio. It can encode speech and music across a broad range of bitrates, but whether you can use it for a live broadcast depends on the software and transport in your workflow—and, especially, whether the platform accepts Opus for live ingest.

What Opus is—and what it is not

RFC 6716 defines Opus as an interactive speech and audio codec for applications such as voice over IP, videoconferencing, in-game chat, and live distributed music. Published as an IETF Standards Track document in September 2012, it combines linear prediction (LP) and modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) coding to serve both speech and music use cases.

For a streamer, Opus is an encoding and decoding choice in a software-and-transport chain. It is not a microphone type, and the codec standard by itself does not prescribe an end-to-end streaming workflow. Three separate questions matter:

  • What the codec can encode: the audio formats and operating ranges defined by Opus.
  • What your software and transport can carry: the formats supported by the encoder, container, protocol, and receiving decoder in your setup.
  • What a platform accepts for live ingest: the service’s current requirements for incoming broadcasts. Codec capability alone does not answer this.

Opus bitrate, delay, and music quality

RFC 6716 specifies bitrates from 6 to 510 kbit/s and algorithmic delay from 5 to 65.2 ms. Those are codec capabilities, not universal presets or guarantees of a particular listening result. The right choice depends on the content, mono or stereo channels, bandwidth mode, frame size, encoder settings, and transport constraints.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For 20 ms frames, the RFC gives these example bitrate “sweet spots.” Treat them as codec guidance for those conditions, not as current settings for a particular streaming service.

Use case RFC 6716 example bitrate at 20 ms frame size
Narrowband speech 8–12 kbit/s
Wideband speech 16–20 kbit/s
Fullband speech 28–40 kbit/s
Fullband mono music 48–64 kbit/s
Fullband stereo music 64–128 kbit/s

These examples are not a one-size-fits-all ladder: a higher bitrate does not automatically produce a perceptible improvement in every application. Use the channel count and content category that match your audio, then check the limits of the software and receiving service.

What Opus’s sample-rate and bandwidth terms mean

Opus defines five audio bandwidths: narrowband (4 kHz), medium-band (6 kHz), wideband (8 kHz), super-wideband (12 kHz), and fullband (20 kHz). Their corresponding effective sample rates are 8, 12, 16, 24, and 48 kHz.

Opus in real-time communication versus live broadcast

Opus is relevant to WebRTC real-time audio. The WebRTC audio requirements refer to Opus, and RFC 7875 describes Opus implementation as mandatory for WebRTC endpoints. That establishes its role in WebRTC; it does not establish that YouTube, Twitch, or another video platform accepts Opus as live-broadcast ingest.

Before selecting Opus for a broadcast, check the current official encoder or live-ingest documentation for the specific platform and software version you use. Confirm support for the complete path—not just the encoder—including the output format and transport. If the platform does not accept that combination, choose an ingest format it documents as supported.

How to choose an audio codec for a streaming workflow

There is no useful universal winner based on the codec name alone. Compare the options against the actual job:

  • Compatibility: Will the platform accept the codec through your chosen transport and output format?
  • Audio needs: Is the source speech, music, or both, and do you need mono or stereo?
  • Bitrate and quality: Compare settings at the same channel count and with comparable content, rather than comparing bitrate figures in isolation.
  • Latency: Consider the complete path from encoding to playback; a codec’s algorithmic delay is not the same as total end-to-end latency.
  • Recording and archive: Check whether the codec and container suit the format you need to edit, export, or preserve.

For implementation or conformance details, RFC 6716 points readers to RFC 8251 for an update. Codec specifications explain capabilities; platform documentation is still needed for current ingest requirements.

Opus licensing in brief

The Opus project describes the specification as freely available and says its reference encoder and decoder can be integrated into applications, including commercial products, under the stated terms. It also describes royalty-free patent licenses for compatible use and notes a patent-litigation condition. Read the project’s current licensing terms directly before making a commercial implementation decision; this summary is not legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Opus lossless?

No. Opus is a lossy codec: it compresses audio, so the decoded signal is not guaranteed to match the original exactly.

Does a 48 kHz Opus setting mean it encodes sound up to 48 kHz?

No. In Opus terminology, 48 kHz is the fullband effective sample rate; the RFC says the codec does not code above 20 kHz.
