How to Fix Audio Popping Between Videos in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find and fix a pop between playlist videos, compare the original files, a local recording of the playlist output, and the delivered YouTube stream. That tells you whether the click is already in a source file, is introduced at a playlist transition, or appears only in the streaming path. A short fade or crossfade can help test a boundary, but there is no documented universal fix—and 4K/60 by itself is not established as a cause.

First locate where the pop enters the audio chain

Make three comparisons before changing settings: play the source files directly, capture or record the playlist output locally if your setup allows it, then listen to the YouTube live playback or archive. A clean local preview alone cannot establish that the delivered stream is clean; YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and checking stream health. YouTube Live encoder settings

  • The pop is in a source file: repair or replace that media. Encoder changes will not remove an artifact already in the recording.
  • The sources are clean, but the local playlist output pops: focus on the transition, player, and source changes.
  • The local output is clean, but YouTube playback pops: test the audio configuration and streaming path, then review stream health.
  • Only some boundaries pop: note the exact pair of videos; a problem at one boundary points toward those files or their transition rather than a universal setting.

Inspect the boundary between the two videos

Listen to the ending and beginning

Play the last moments of the first video and the opening of the next separately. If possible, zoom in on the waveform around the final samples of one file and the first samples of the other. Listen for an abrupt cut, a click already present in either file, or an unexpected pause.

Test a fade on a duplicate playlist

Make a test copy and apply a short fade-out and fade-in, or a short crossfade if the player supports it. Compare that version with the original transition. If the pop disappears, the result is evidence that the boundary deserves closer inspection—not proof of a specific root cause. A fade can conceal a discontinuity or timing change without correcting it.

Repeat the same transition

Run the same two files several times and record whether the result is repeatable. Note whether the next video changes resolution, frame rate, audio channel layout, or codec. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a transition edit, source format, or player configuration affects the result.

Keep audio format settings consistent

Check that the encoder uses a supported audio codec and a stable sample-rate configuration. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for Live audio. Its current encoder guidance recommends these audio settings: YouTube Live encoder settings

Audio format YouTube guidance
Stereo 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 kbps bitrate
5.1 surround 48 kHz sample rate; 384 kbps bitrate

These are platform recommendations, not evidence that a mismatched sample rate or bitrate caused a particular pop. If your playlist mixes sources with different formats, test a consistent audio configuration or a consistently converted set of copies, then compare the same transition again.

Check 4K/60 video health separately

Video bitrate and keyframe settings are worth checking for stream health, but the figures below do not show that 4K or 60 fps causes audio pops. YouTube’s current Live encoder guidance for 2160p at 60 fps is a video bitrate range of 10–40 Mbps, with 35 Mbps recommended; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Treat these as a separate health check. If the audio artifact coincides with dropped frames or another stream-health warning, investigate those issues too; do not assume that changing resolution or video bitrate will fix the audio boundary.

If you use OBS and a VLC playlist source

Record your OBS version and observe what happens as the playlist advances. Check whether a source change lines up with the pop and whether the incoming item changes resolution or other media properties. OBS Studio 29 release notes mention a crash fix involving a video source that frequently changed resolution, including a VLC playlist example. That note concerns crashes, not audio popping, so it supports checking the version and source behavior—not treating an OBS update as a proven audio fix. OBS Studio 29.0.0 release notes

Run a representative YouTube test

  1. Use the same kind of audio and motion as the intended stream; YouTube recommends representative test content.
  2. Where appropriate, test privately or unlisted, and listen to the resulting YouTube playback or archive as well as your local output.
  3. Review YouTube stream health during the test. Note the time of each pop and whether a warning or other visible stream issue occurs at the same point.
  4. Change only one setting or media treatment per test and keep a simple record of the source pair, transition, audio configuration, and result.

Common symptoms and what to try

What you hear or observe Next check
The same click occurs when playing one file on its own Inspect or repair that source file; compare another copy if available.
Files sound clean alone, but the local playlist pops at a boundary Repeat the same pair, inspect its waveform boundary, and compare a short fade or crossfade on a duplicate playlist.
The local playlist is clean, but the YouTube result pops Verify the supported codec and stable audio settings, then run a representative test and review stream health.
The problem appears only when a particular next item loads Observe source changes and compare the incoming video’s resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and codec.
The pop appears alongside stream-health trouble Check video and audio encoder settings separately and use YouTube’s stream-health feedback; do not assume a video setting alone explains the click.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the playlist is part of a 24/7 YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
