FFmpeg’s HLS variant playlists are a different thing: they provide multiple quality variants within one HLS presentation; they do not create separate YouTube live streams or assign different keys.
First, distinguish YouTube destinations from HLS playlists
A YouTube live destination is a stream configured in YouTube Studio. Its ingest URL and stream key tell an encoder where to send the feed and which stream it belongs to. YouTube describes a stream key as being like the stream’s “password and address.” YouTube’s live stream settings explain how to manage keys.
An HLS variant playlist is part of a single HLS presentation: it points viewers or a player to variants such as different bitrates. Creating several variant playlists with FFmpeg does not create separate YouTube live events. To reach distinct YouTube destinations, configure distinct outputs, each with the URL and key for its intended destination.
Set up each YouTube Live destination
- Create or select a stream for each destination. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to receive an output. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow for the selected stream.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key. Keep each pair together: a key must be used with the appropriate ingest configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup describes entering the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s streaming with an encoder instructions provide the workflow.
- Choose the ingest protocol YouTube provides. For RTMP or RTMPS, use the corresponding server URL and key. For HLS, configure an HLS stream key and use the HTTPS HLS URL provided in Live Control Room; the key may already be embedded in that URL. Do not assume an RTMP-style URL/key arrangement applies to HLS.
- Protect and rotate keys when necessary. YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused. If a key is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update FFmpeg with the new corresponding credentials before restarting.
Configure FFmpeg for multiple destinations
For one encoded feed sent to several destinations, FFmpeg’s tee muxer can distribute the same encoded packets to multiple outputs, avoiding a separate encode for each destination when the same video and audio are suitable for all outputs. Tee does not automatically select streams or infer output formats, so map streams explicitly and specify the muxer format for each output when needed. The exact syntax depends on the ingest protocol, FFmpeg build, and muxer options; there is no universal command that works for every YouTube endpoint.

Use the general pattern below as a configuration outline, not a copy-and-run command. Replace the bracketed text with the actual values and options for your source, YouTube destinations, and FFmpeg build. This schematic deliberately does not encode protocol-specific URL escaping or tee syntax for a particular endpoint.

Tee has no inherent output format. For protocols requiring a format declaration, specify the appropriate format for that output; do not guess it from the URL.

Map the streams that each output needs
FFmpeg’s -map option selects which input streams are placed in an output. Repeat mappings as necessary, and map deliberately: a source without audio, or one with multiple audio tracks, may need different mapping from the example pattern. Tee does not make stream selection automatic. FFmpeg documents these rules under advanced options.
Use conventional outputs when destinations need different encoding
If destinations require different resolutions, bitrates, codecs, or other transformations, configure outputs that encode independently rather than assuming one shared encoded feed fits them all. FFmpeg’s conventional multiple-output approach can initiate parallel encoding operations, which may use more compute than tee’s single encode. Choose based on whether a shared encoded stream satisfies every destination and whether the machine can handle the required work.

Check FFmpeg’s installed capabilities
FFmpeg’s online documentation is rolling and may describe options absent from an older installed binary. If an option or muxer is rejected, inspect the installed build’s supported formats and encoder options, then adapt the output configuration to that build. The protocol and exact output syntax should be validated against both YouTube’s supplied ingest details and your FFmpeg version.
Configure YouTube HLS ingest correctly
HLS ingest is not the same as generating a local .m3u8 playlist for viewers. YouTube’s HLS workflow uses the HTTPS ingest URL and key configuration supplied in Live Control Room. Do not substitute a locally served playlist URL for YouTube’s ingest endpoint unless you have a documented workflow that specifically calls for it.

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies these ingest requirements:
- Use MPEG-TS segments.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Set segment duration to 1–4 seconds.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT, as directed by the ingest workflow.
- Do not use byte ranges.
These are YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements, not universal HLS rules. YouTube also notes that HLS generally has higher latency than a continuous-stream protocol because it sends segments. Its HLS ultra-low-latency option is off. Review the current YouTube HLS ingestion guidance and configure the endpoint and key accordingly.

Understand stream and playlist limits
YouTube’s current Help guidance states a simultaneous limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Both limits apply: staying under the per-key limit does not override the channel limit. These are YouTube service limits, so check the current YouTube streaming limits before planning a larger setup; the surfaced Help page does not provide a publication date for these figures.
Those limits concern active streams, not the number of variant playlists within one HLS presentation. A set of HLS variants is not a way to bypass the limit or create extra independent destinations.
When FFmpeg HLS variants are the actual goal
If you want several quality variants in one HLS presentation, FFmpeg’s HLS muxer supports variant grouping through var_stream_map. The setup uses repeated -map options to associate streams with variants and names separate media playlists. That packages variants for one presentation; it does not send each variant to a distinct YouTube live stream key. See the FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation for the available options and examples.
Troubleshoot a multi-destination setup
- One destination works but another does not: Check that the failing output uses the URL and key belonging to that exact YouTube stream, and confirm that its protocol matches the key configuration.
- FFmpeg reports that it cannot infer an output format: Tee does not infer output formats. Add the required format declaration for each output using the muxer appropriate to its ingest protocol.
- An output has no audio or video: Review the
-mapselections and confirm the input actually contains the selected stream types. Tee does not select streams automatically. - YouTube rejects HLS ingest: Verify that you used the HLS HTTPS ingest endpoint and corresponding configuration from Live Control Room. Check TS segmenting, rolling playlist limits, segment duration, POST/PUT behavior, and the prohibition on byte ranges against YouTube’s HLS requirements.
- A reset key stops the feed: Update the matching FFmpeg output with the new key and restart it. Resetting one destination’s key does not mean the other outputs’ keys should be changed.
- A command-line option is unrecognized: Check the installed FFmpeg version and build; the online documentation may include options your binary does not support.
- You exceed a YouTube concurrency limit: Count active streams for the channel and for each key separately, then stop unneeded streams or assign destinations within the current limits.
