At a steady 100 W, it uses 72 kWh in a 30-day month; at an illustrative ₹4–₹10 per kWh, that would cost ₹288–₹720. The wattage examples and rates here are scenarios, not measured PC results or universal Indian tariffs.
How much electricity does a gaming PC use per month?
For continuous use over a 30-day month, the calculation is:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average wall draw (watts) × 0.72
Monthly electricity cost = monthly energy (kWh) × your marginal rate (₹/kWh)

The 0.72 factor represents 720 hours (24 hours × 30 days) divided by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours. Each average watt adds 0.72 kWh over that period. For a full 365-day year, use 8,760 operating hours rather than multiplying a 30-day month by 12.

Measure the PC’s real streaming workload
A power supply’s rated wattage is not the PC’s continuous electricity draw. Consumption varies with CPU and GPU activity, resolution and frame rate, hardware versus software encoding, power limits, background processes, and connected equipment. No PC model or measured power result is specified here, so use a plug-in kWh meter or energy monitor to get a figure for your own setup.
- Connect the PC to a meter rated for your outlet and load. Check the meter’s electrical rating and plug compatibility first.
- Run the intended streaming setup, including the same encoder, output settings, playback, and typical background tasks you expect to use.
- Record accumulated kWh over a representative period—ideally a full day—then divide by elapsed hours to get average kW. Multiply by 1,000 for average watts. Alternatively, if the meter gives average watts directly, use that reading in the monthly formula.
- Decide whether to include monitors, lights, networking equipment, capture devices, or speakers. Meter them too if they will be left on for the stream and you want the total setup cost.
If the PC already runs for some of the day, compare only the additional hours and draw caused by continuous streaming against your existing use. Fixed bill charges generally are not attributable to one extra device unless its use changes the applicable load category or another billing condition.

Use your actual Indian electricity tariff
There is no single household electricity rate for all of India. Retail tariffs depend on the state and distribution company (DISCOM), and bills may include consumption slabs, duties, fixed charges, or subsidies. A representative rate is not necessarily the price of the next unit your household consumes.
Start with your latest bill and your DISCOM’s current tariff schedule. If the additional streaming units could move the household into a higher slab, calculate the bill once with the PC’s added units and once without it, then subtract the two totals. That gives a better estimate of the incremental charge than applying one average rate to every added unit. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compendium is a reference for state schedules. REC’s FY 2025-26 comparison reports representative effective domestic rates for a specific 3 kW, 100-units-per-month case; it is useful context, not a universal household or marginal rate.

Streaming settings affect workload, not the bill formula
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion options including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps and constant-bitrate encoding. Recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends H.264 at 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60; its AV1/H.265 guidance lists 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These settings describe the stream, not the computer’s power draw: the same output can consume different power on different systems or with different encoding methods. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
For upload capacity, YouTube’s network tips recommend roughly 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate and emphasize a reliable connection. Test with representative audio and motion, check stream health, and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream.

Check YouTube live-stream eligibility and reliability
For encoder-based live streaming, YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its live-streaming tips recommend setting up and testing in advance and monitoring stream quality. Eligibility and stream reliability are separate from the electricity calculation: they affect whether a continuous broadcast can run, not the kWh formula.
