Choose an AWS video service by starting with the video source and the viewing experience you need. For prerecorded files, use AWS Elemental MediaConvert to encode them, store the outputs (commonly in Amazon S3), and deliver them through Amazon CloudFront. For a live broadcast or continuous channel, use AWS Elemental MediaLive, then choose MediaPackage or MediaStore according to your packaging needs. Amazon IVS is aimed at low-latency live experiences in apps and websites; Amazon Kinesis Video Streams is for video sent from devices for viewing, processing, or analytics.

Choose by the job your video workflow must do

These services have different roles; they are not interchangeable versions of a single streaming product. Encoding turns source video into delivery-ready media, packaging prepares it for playback formats and features, storage keeps files or media available, and a content delivery network distributes media to viewers. In AWS’s example architectures, CloudFront is the delivery layer, not an encoder or packager. AWS outlines these roles in its CloudFront guide to VOD and live streaming.

Your requirement AWS pattern to consider What to decide next
Viewers choose when to watch videos from a prerecorded library MediaConvert + storage, often Amazon S3 + CloudFront Output formats, packaging, retention, and playback distribution
Live broadcast or a continuous live channel MediaLive + MediaPackage or MediaStore + CloudFront Whether you need multiple prepared formats, DRM, or playback features, and whether your encoded output already fits target devices
Live video inside an app or website where interaction and low latency matter Amazon IVS Application integration and the interactive experience you need; the cited AWS overview does not establish a numeric latency guarantee or comparison
Cameras or other devices sending video for monitoring, processing, or analytics Kinesis Video Streams Device ingestion, real-time processing, retention, and later access

For prerecorded video: MediaConvert, storage, and CloudFront

Use a file-based workflow when the source is a recording or other stored asset, rather than a live feed that must be encoded as it arrives. MediaConvert processes the file into delivery outputs. Store those outputs on a server or in S3, then use CloudFront to distribute them. AWS’s CloudFront media streaming tutorials and CloudFront streaming guide describe this general VOD pattern.

What packaging and delivery do

Common streaming playback requires media segments and manifest files that tell a player how to request and present them. AWS lists MPEG-DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF among the formats used in its streaming guidance. CloudFront can distribute VOD or live streams from an HTTP origin; it does not create the encoded media or manifests for you.

When to add workflow automation

For a repeatable VOD pipeline, AWS’s Video on Demand on AWS Foundation workflow uses an S3 upload to trigger Lambda, which submits a MediaConvert job. CloudWatch tracks job status, the encoded result is saved to a destination S3 bucket, and CloudFront serves it. This event-driven pattern is useful when uploads should automatically enter processing rather than being submitted manually. See the Video on Demand on AWS Foundation guidance for the described workflow.

For live broadcast or a 24/7 channel: MediaLive plus an origin path

MediaLive is the AWS encoding service to consider when the input is a live feed. It compresses the live feed into multiple encodings. After encoding, choose a preparation and origin path before CloudFront delivery; the right choice depends on playback formats and features, not simply on whether the channel is live.

Choose MediaPackage when preparation or protection is needed

MediaPackage is appropriate when the workflow needs content prepared into multiple formats, DRM protection, or viewer playback features. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS solution overview describes MediaLive and MediaPackage producing adaptive-bitrate HLS, DASH, and CMAF streams for CloudFront, along with redundant inputs and content-protection capabilities.

Consider MediaStore when your encoded formats already fit

MediaStore is an alternative when the encoder already emits formats suited to the target devices and the workflow does not need MediaPackage’s preparation features. AWS identifies both MediaPackage and MediaStore as live preparation/origin paths that can be paired with CloudFront. Compare the target players and required playback features before choosing; do not add a packaging layer merely because the source is live.

Live input does not automatically mean an external hardware encoder

A physical or on-premises encoder can be part of a live input workflow, but AWS’s service descriptions do not establish that every implementation needs an external hardware encoder or identify a universally recommended model. Choose the input method based on the production source and verify that it is compatible with the AWS ingest path you plan to use. AWS’s streaming tutorials discuss live streaming inputs without prescribing one hardware product for every setup.

For interactive app video: Amazon IVS

Consider Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS) when the product is a live video experience embedded in an app or website and interaction is important. AWS positions IVS for low-latency live video and interactive viewer experiences in its Media Services overview. The cited overview does not provide a numeric latency guarantee or a quantified comparison against a MediaLive-based workflow, so do not select IVS on an assumed latency figure; evaluate the integration and interaction requirements of your application.

For device video and analytics: Kinesis Video Streams

Choose Amazon Kinesis Video Streams when cameras or other devices send video into an application or AWS workflow for live viewing, real-time processing, or later analysis. AWS says it can make incoming media available for live viewing as data arrives, support real-time and batch analytics, and retain media for later access. Its documented source examples include webcams and network cameras using RTSP. This is a device-ingestion and processing role, distinct from using MediaConvert to prepare a library of uploaded VOD files. See What is Amazon Kinesis Video Streams?.

Do you need MediaPackage with MediaLive?

No—not in every workflow. MediaLive handles live encoding; the next layer depends on the outputs and playback requirements. Use MediaPackage when you need multiple prepared formats, DRM, or its playback features. Consider MediaStore when the encoded formats already suit the target devices. Either route can be paired with CloudFront delivery. The AWS live streaming solution describes the MediaLive–MediaPackage path, while AWS’s CloudFront guide also identifies MediaStore as an alternative for suitable outputs.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using MediaLive for a library of uploaded recordings: MediaLive is for a live feed; use MediaConvert for file-based encoding.
  • Expecting CloudFront to encode or package media: CloudFront distributes content from an origin. Ensure the workflow creates media segments and manifests before playback delivery.
  • Adding MediaPackage by default: First check whether the encoded output already matches your players and whether you need multiple formats, DRM, or playback features.
  • Choosing IVS based on an assumed latency number: AWS’s cited overview positions it for low-latency interactive experiences but does not establish a numeric guarantee or comparison.
  • Treating Kinesis Video Streams as a VOD transcoder: Its documented purpose is device video ingestion and application processing, not the file-encoding role assigned to MediaConvert.
  • Assuming a hardware encoder is mandatory: A physical encoder may be one live input option, but AWS’s descriptions do not say every setup requires one or endorse a particular model.

Cost and planning considerations

The AWS materials cited here establish service roles and architecture patterns, not a comparable end-to-end price for your workload. Estimate costs against the actual components and usage in your design: encoding jobs for VOD or live encoding, storage and retention, packaging or origin services, and CloudFront delivery. For a device-ingestion workflow, include the ingestion, retention, processing, and playback requirements. The right service combination depends on those details; a service-selection table alone cannot establish your bill.

When the job is simply keeping prerecorded video live on YouTube

AWS MediaLive architectures are for building an AWS-managed live-video workflow; they are not the same thing as a service that loops uploaded recordings to a YouTube channel. If your specific goal is an always-on YouTube channel made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the more direct fit: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud

  • Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud, with no computer, OBS, or home connection required to remain on.
  • Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
