How to Avoid Re-encoding 4K 60fps Videos in a YouTube Live Loop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a compatible 4K 60fps video without encoding it again on your computer, use FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input and -c copy on the output. This copies the file’s existing audio and video streams instead of decoding and re-encoding them. It does not stop YouTube from processing the incoming stream: YouTube says it transcodes live video into multiple playback formats.

What “no re-encoding” does—and does not—mean

FFmpeg streamcopy passes encoded packets through without decoding and encoding them again. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “Since there is no decoding or encoding, it is very fast and there is no quality loss.” That describes the local copy operation, not a guarantee that every source file will work with every output.

YouTube separately processes live input for viewers. Its Help guidance says, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” So the practical goal is to avoid an extra encode on the computer sending the stream—not to make YouTube distribute the original file bit-for-bit to every viewer.

Check whether your 4K60 file is suitable for streamcopy

-c copy keeps the existing encoded streams. It cannot change their codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, timestamps, or other encoded properties, and it cannot apply filters. Compatibility depends on the actual audio and video streams, their structure and timing, and YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Check the video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, and stream structure in your file before starting.
  • Confirm the file’s encoded streams are compatible with the output format and YouTube ingest path you intend to use.
  • Do not re-encode just because the file has a particular bitrate. Streamcopy preserves that bitrate; changing it generally requires encoding.
  • If you need to scale, add an overlay, filter the picture or sound, or change codec parameters, streamcopy alone cannot do that. Those operations require decoding and normally encoding again.

No source file, FFmpeg build, upload connection, or channel setup is specified here, so no command can be guaranteed to work unchanged for every file. Treat the example below as a template and use FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health feedback to check your own stream.

Loop the file with FFmpeg

  1. Get the ingest details from YouTube Studio. Create or open your live stream in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  2. Set the destination variables. Use the ingest URL and key supplied by YouTube. For a typical RTMP-style destination, the combined destination has the form YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY. Prefer RTMPS when YouTube offers it; YouTube recommends secure RTMPS ingest.
  3. Run the streamcopy loop. Replace the example values with your actual input file and private destination. This illustrative shell command has not been tested against your particular file or channel:
    ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
  4. Check both sides. Read FFmpeg’s stream mapping and error messages, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and preview. Confirm that the picture and sound play, the stream remains healthy, and the video repeats as expected.

Option placement matters: FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option, so put it before the relevant -i. The value -1 requests infinite looping. -re reads the input at its native rate, which is useful for live output timing. Put -c copy after the input as an output option so FFmpeg copies rather than re-encodes the streams.

4K60 ingest settings to verify

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The following 2160p60 figures are from the English UK YouTube Help table accessed on October 3, 2026; regional versions have shown different figures, so check the current official table for your region before configuring an encoder.

Codec at 2160p60 YouTube Help bitrate guidance
H.264 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum

These are YouTube ingest guidance figures, not instructions to lower or raise a copied file’s bitrate. With streamcopy, FFmpeg does not adjust that bitrate. If the input does not meet your destination’s requirements, you may need to remux it or re-encode it with suitable settings.

YouTube says 2160p streams do not offer the low-latency setting and use normal latency. That is a YouTube service behavior, separate from whether FFmpeg re-encodes locally.

Streamcopy versus re-encoding

Workflow What happens Best suited to
Streamcopy (-c copy) Copies existing encoded streams without a new local encode; preserves the source streams and cannot apply filters or change their encoded parameters. A compatible file that already meets the ingest and output requirements.
Re-encoding Decodes and encodes again, using local compute and potentially introducing another generation of quality loss; can change codec or parameters and support transformations. A file that needs incompatible streams converted, or needs scaling, overlays, filters, or other changes.

Neither method removes YouTube’s own live-stream processing for playback formats.

Common problems and what to check

  • FFmpeg rejects the output or reports an unsupported codec. The source streams may not fit the selected output or ingest requirements. Check the stream mapping and codec compatibility; use a suitable remux where possible, or re-encode if the streams must change.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or does not show video. Check the server URL and key, confirm the stream is reaching the intended Live Control Room event, and compare the actual input streams with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Do not assume that changing a bitrate flag will help while using -c copy; streamcopy retains the source bitstream.
  • The stream starts but timing or playback is wrong. Check FFmpeg’s timestamps and stream mapping, confirm -re and -stream_loop are placed as shown, and inspect the live preview. The command is a template, not a guarantee for every container or file.
  • You need overlays, scaling, or picture/audio filters. Those changes require decoded media, so the streamcopy approach is not sufficient. Use a filter-and-encode workflow and choose settings that match YouTube’s current guidance.
  • The live stream ends or the archive is missing. A looping input alone does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting or indefinite archives. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not infer that a longer stream will be archived in the same way.

Copyright and channel considerations

A file looping technically is not the same as having the right to broadcast it or being eligible for monetization. Before streaming, make sure you have permission for the video, music, and other material in it, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules. Repeated or reused content may raise channel-policy concerns even when the stream runs correctly. The copyright safety checklist at StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help you review a planned stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
