Amazon Interactive Video Service (Amazon IVS) provides the live video and timed cues for a shopping stream; it does not create your catalog, product cards, cart, checkout, or order system. To make a product appear at the right moment, send timed metadata while the channel is live, then have your application receive the cue and load current product information from your own commerce backend.
Choose the right IVS mode for your shopping format
| Option | Best fit | Latency and audience |
|---|---|---|
| Low-latency channel | A host broadcasts to a viewing audience; use this for a conventional one-to-many shopping show. | AWS documents delivery in under five seconds, depending on broadcaster location and settings. Use the IVS Player to achieve low latency. |
| Real-time stage | Hosts and guests need interactive, stage-level participation. | AWS describes real-time latency under 300 ms, audiences beyond 25,000 viewers, and up to 12 hosts, subject to service quotas. If a stage is broadcast onward to an IVS channel, channel viewers receive channel latency, not stage-level latency. |
These are AWS-published capability figures, not a performance guarantee for a particular deployment. Geography, network conditions, configuration, and quotas matter. See the Amazon IVS low-latency overview and real-time overview.
Build the video path and secure it
- Create the AWS environment. Follow the IVS getting-started flow to create an AWS account, configure IAM, create a channel, set up streaming software, and test playback. Review quotas and safeguards for unwanted content or viewers before launching.
- Protect channel credentials. Treat stream keys as secrets. In production, scope IAM permissions to the channels and actions the application needs; do not expose keys in client-side code or public repositories.
- Choose an encoder and ingest protocol. IVS supports RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest for low-latency channels. You can use streaming software such as OBS, SDKs, or other documented software and hardware encoders; the AWS setup guide also covers smartphone and studio-style arrangements. For RTMPS, AWS lists TLS 1.2 or later. The low-latency guide supports H.264 video and AAC-LC audio.
- Configure and test the complete path. A two-second keyframe interval is a reasonable starting point. A one-second interval can be a latency tradeoff, but may lead to more frequent adaptive-bitrate changes and buffering. Test ingest, IVS Player playback, metadata events, and product UI on the devices and networks your viewers will use. See the IVS streaming configuration guidance and streaming guide.
For the low-latency goal, AWS says to use the IVS Player; third-party HLS players are not supported for that low-latency experience. Actual latency varies with geography, network, and streaming configuration.
Design product cues around timed metadata
Timed metadata is the IVS mechanism for synchronizing product details with the stream. A cue is aligned to the stream timeline across viewers, including viewers in different geographies or at different playback latency. It is not a guarantee of exact wall-clock delivery: AWS says insertion is attempted as soon as possible and does not guarantee when it occurs. Read the timed metadata documentation.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Define a compact, versioned payload
AWS establishes that product details can be sent as timed metadata but does not prescribe a shopping payload schema. As an application design choice, send a compact versioned cue with a type and stable product identifier; include optional display context only if needed. Resolve that identifier against your catalog rather than treating metadata as the authoritative price or stock record.
Insert cues only while the channel is live
- Start the channel and confirm it is live.
- From a trusted backend or operator tool, insert a cue through the IVS API or broadcast SDK. The AWS CLI example is
aws ivs put-metadata --channel-arn <channel-arn> --metadata <payload>. - Grant the calling identity the required
ivs:PutMetadatapermission, scoped appropriately. AWS accepts metadata insertion only while the specified channel is live. - For mobile broadcast applications, the Android and iOS broadcast SDKs provide
sendTimedMetadata.
Receive the cue and render current product data
Subscribe to the IVS Player metadata event: TEXT_METADATA_CUE on Web, or the corresponding cue callbacks on Android and iOS. Validate and parse the cue, then fetch current product details from your own backend before updating the product card. Make purchase eligibility, price, and stock checks against current commerce state; a timed cue can be stale by the time a viewer acts.

Support replay and commerce state deliberately
IVS metadata is carried in ID3 tags in video segments and remains available in recorded video. The player can emit cue events during live and recorded playback, so the same cue-to-interface approach can support replays. Your application still needs to decide how replay cues interact with today’s catalog, availability, pricing, and checkout rules. AWS also warns that network problems can cause recording data loss and that IVS prioritizes the live stream; a local recording made by the streaming tool can provide a backup.
Plan around operational limits and cost
The AWS setup guide reviewed lists a maximum stream duration of 48 hours, after which the stream disconnects. Treat this as an operational limit to verify against current service quotas before planning a long event or unattended broadcast. Cost depends on region, configuration, viewers, watch time, and recording or storage choices; no single estimate fits every event. Use current AWS pricing information with your expected scenario rather than relying on an unsupported per-stream figure.

Troubleshoot common live-shopping failures
- The stream plays, but no product card appears: Confirm metadata was inserted while the channel was live, the caller has
ivs:PutMetadata, the payload parses and validates, and the player is listening for the correct cue event. - The card appears at different real-world times for viewers: Timed metadata follows the stream timeline, not a shared wall clock. Viewers with different latency can see the same cue at different times on a clock; do not schedule inventory changes on the assumption of an exact insertion instant.
- Playback latency is higher than expected: Verify that viewers use the IVS Player for low-latency playback, then inspect geography, network conditions, and encoder configuration. A stage broadcast to a channel gives channel viewers channel latency.
- Playback buffers or quality changes frequently: Test the keyframe interval and adaptive-bitrate behavior end to end. AWS notes that one-second keyframes can bring more frequent bitrate changes and possible buffering; two seconds is the common starting recommendation.
- A replay cue shows outdated product information: Treat the recorded cue as a trigger, not a durable price or inventory snapshot. Resolve it against current backend data and apply replay-specific purchase rules.
- A long broadcast disconnects: Account for the 48-hour maximum duration listed in the setup guide and plan a controlled restart if the event needs to continue. Verify current service limits before relying on this duration.
- The live stream survives but the recording has gaps: AWS says recording data can be lost during network issues because the service prioritizes live delivery. Consider recording locally through the streaming tool as redundancy.
