With a local encoder, the computer, media files, power and internet connection must stay available, and someone needs to monitor the stream and respond to interruptions. Before either setup goes live, confirm channel eligibility and clear the rights for every recording and musical work in every territory where viewers may access the stream.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the livestreamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before building the schedule; requirements can change.
- A playback route: a local encoder that can play your media continuously, or a cloud playout service.
- Recordings and musical works cleared for the uses you intend, including live streaming. If you plan to leave an archive available or monetize the stream, confirm those uses separately.
- A monitoring and recovery plan. A stream that is meant to run unattended still needs a way to detect a failure and an operator who can investigate it.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream key to direct the encoder’s feed to the channel. Treat that key like a password: share it only with trusted operators and enter it only in the encoder or service you intend to use.
Choose how to play the recordings
Local encoder, such as OBS
A local setup gives you direct control over the playback computer and media. It also makes the stream dependent on that computer, its storage, power and upload connection staying available. OBS is one software-encoding option; consult the current instructions for the encoder you choose to configure continuous playback. The YouTube guidance establishes encoder streaming, but does not prescribe a specific OBS source, playlist or repeat-menu sequence.
Cloud playout
A cloud playout service runs the media feed remotely, so a personal computer does not have to remain online for playback. Check the provider’s current price, storage limits, cancellation terms, monitoring and recovery options before committing. A provider’s description of its service is not independent evidence of uptime, so plan how you will notice and handle an interruption.

Clear rights for the full kirtan program
Do not assume that a recording is cleared because it is devotional, publicly available online, or permitted for an in-person performance. The person operating the stream is responsible for obtaining the rights needed for the online use. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the streamer for necessary rights, including music licensing rights. The exact recordings, rights holders and territories are different for every program, so no blanket clearance can be inferred for Sikh kirtan as a category.
Make a rights inventory
For each audio or video item, record the title, performer, recording owner and the underlying composition or lyrics where applicable. Then document the permission or license, the territories it covers, its term and whether it allows each use you plan.

- Keeping an archived replay available after the live broadcast
- Monetization, if you intend to apply for it
Get written permission from the relevant rights holders and keep it accessible to the person monitoring the stream. If an owner has licensed material for your channel, ask whether they must add the channel to a Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a live stream can still be interrupted when licensed material is not allowlisted.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Confirm eligibility. Check channel verification, age eligibility and whether any livestream restriction applies within the preceding 90 days.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the encoder streaming route and create the broadcast for the channel. Review the broadcast details before using it for a continuous program.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder. YouTube uses the key to identify where the encoder should send its feed. Keep it private and do not include it in public screenshots, stream graphics or instructions.
- Prepare the media playback. Add the recording or playlist using the playback controls documented by your encoder. Configure repeat or continuous playback in that encoder, then test the transition from the end of one item to the next. Do not assume that YouTube itself controls the encoder’s source loop.
- Preview and verify the outgoing feed. Check that picture and sound reach YouTube and that the stream is healthy before announcing the service or leaving it unattended. Confirm playlist transitions and the encoder’s behavior if the connection drops.
There is no bitrate, resolution, frame-rate or keyframe value that can responsibly be prescribed here for every setup: the appropriate encoder settings depend on the source and current YouTube and encoder guidance. Use the current recommendations shown for your broadcast and encoder rather than copying a fixed configuration that may not match your media or connection.

Test, monitor and recover
Test the entire chain
- Listen for clean audio and check the video throughout a representative section of the program.
- Watch at least one playlist transition, including the end-to-start boundary if the program loops.
- Confirm the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room and check its stream-health status.
- For a local setup, verify that the computer will not sleep or lose power and that the media remains available. Ensure the internet connection can sustain the outgoing feed.
- Decide who will notice an interruption, where they will check for YouTube warnings, and who is authorized to restart the encoder or contact a rights holder.
When YouTube interrupts the stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder image, interruption or termination. If that happens, check YouTube Studio for the specific warning or strike, identify the matched material and address the stated issue before attempting to resume. Keep the rights records and rights-holder contact details available to the operator; a license may not prevent interruption if the channel needs to be allowlisted.
Decide whether to keep an archive
Archiving is a separate decision from sending the live feed. YouTube says Content ID claims on an archived live stream are made after the stream is complete when the creator chooses to archive it. Check that the rights for each item cover the replay and that your archive setting matches the permissions you obtained.

Copyright permission does not guarantee monetization
Do not plan on ad revenue simply because a stream is continuous or the music is licensed. YouTube’s reused-content policy is separate from copyright enforcement and applies at the channel level. A channel built around repetitive or minimally varied programming can face monetization problems even when permission exists. Consider what original contribution and meaningful viewer value the complete channel offers, and assess it against YouTube Partner Program policies; no general conclusion can establish whether a particular Sikh kirtan channel will qualify.
