To play prerecorded lectures continuously on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to load the local files in order, enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart, then send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live event using the event’s stream URL and key. This is an encoder playlist—not a YouTube watch-page playlist. You’ll need VLC installed, a verified channel eligible to livestream, a powered-on computer, and a reliable internet connection.
What “continuous YouTube Live playlist” means
OBS plays the lecture files on your computer and sends the combined output as one live video feed. A YouTube playlist on a watch page is different: it organizes videos for viewers but does not make those recordings play as one live broadcast.
YouTube’s HLS “playlist” is also different. HLS is an encoder-ingestion protocol that sends video in segments; it is not the collection of lectures you load for playback. For an ordinary local lecture sequence, use YouTube’s conventional encoder setup rather than HLS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream (YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream).
Check channel eligibility and recording rights first
Confirm livestream access
YouTube’s global guidance requires a verified channel with no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable and verify access well before the planned broadcast. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. These are YouTube’s general platform requirements; the cited guidance does not describe a separate India-specific encoder or playlist setup (Get started with live streaming; Stream using an encoder).

Clear every element in every lecture
Make sure you have the rights to rebroadcast the lecture itself and all included material: slides, music, film or game clips, images, and other third-party content. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a broadcast. Even if you have a licence, a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for Content ID (Copyright issues with live streams; YouTube Terms of Service). Institutions and creators in India should also confirm that their permissions meet the applicable laws and territorial terms for their material.
Prepare the lecture files and OBS playlist
Install VLC and check your files
OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the VLC architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source can play multiple media files as a playlist; the standard Media Source is for one local file at a time. Keep the recordings accessible on the streaming computer for the entire broadcast.

Build the sequence
- Open OBS Studio and select or create the scene you want viewers to see.
- Add a VLC Video source: in the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add the lecture files to the source’s playlist in the intended course order. Check the order in the list before applying the source settings.
- Set playback behavior: leave shuffle off for a fixed lecture order. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after its final lecture; verify the setting rather than assuming it is on.
- Apply the source and test playback. Check that video and audio appear in the OBS preview and that the first item is the intended lecture.
OBS documents playlist ordering and looping, but that does not guarantee seamless transitions between files encoded differently. Test the actual sequence before you announce it.
Match OBS output to the recordings
Choose canvas and output settings that suit your recordings and available upload capacity. Check that the picture is framed correctly, speech is audible without clipping, and any changes between lectures look acceptable. YouTube recommends selecting encoder settings that fit your connection and testing in advance; it does not establish one bitrate or resolution that is right for every lecture or Indian internet connection. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the quality you intend to send (Stream using an encoder).

Use a reliable wired connection where practical and leave outbound upload headroom rather than planning around the connection’s maximum advertised speed. Other household or campus traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. A local recording can provide a copy of the encoder output if you need one, but it does not replace checking the YouTube preview and stream health.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a new live stream or schedule one. Scheduling is optional, but it gives viewers a watch page in advance and can help them set a reminder (Schedule a live stream).
- Choose visibility—public, unlisted, or private—based on who should be able to watch. Confirm the setting on the event before going live.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with viewers. YouTube’s encoder guide covers connecting an encoder and previewing its feed (Stream using an encoder).
- Start streaming from OBS early enough to test. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event. Confirm the correct playlist is playing, the audio is present, and the selected watch-page visibility is right.
- Check the watch page on a phone and monitor stream health while the broadcast runs. If you are recording locally, confirm that recording is also active.
Plan for a long broadcast
Continuous playback still depends on the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection remaining available. Keep the machine awake and OBS running for the intended duration, prevent avoidable interruptions such as system restarts, and decide in advance who will respond if the encoder or connection stops. YouTube recommends advance setup, testing, a reliable network, and monitoring; neither the cited YouTube guidance nor the OBS playlist documentation guarantees uninterrupted operation.

YouTube says broadcasts under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full. If a complete recording matters, make and verify a local recording or divide the programming into shorter events (Stream using an encoder).

- VLC Video source is missing or does not play: install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. Reopen OBS after installation and test the source again.
- Lectures play in the wrong order: inspect the VLC Video playlist and reorder the files; leave shuffle off when course order matters.
- The playlist stops after the final lecture: enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source settings and test the end of the sequence.
- YouTube does not show a preview: check that OBS is streaming to the intended event and that the stream URL and key are correct. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The stream buffers or drops: check the connection’s available upload capacity and competing network traffic, reduce output demands if needed, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Do not rely on the connection’s headline speed as guaranteed upload capacity.
- Audio is missing or too loud: check the OBS audio mixer and the source’s audio output during a preview; listen on the watch page as well as through the local computer.
- A live broadcast is interrupted over copyrighted material: review the rights for the matched content and whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel. A licence alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
