Secure playback by authenticating viewers and checking their entitlement on a trusted backend, then issuing a short-lived, narrowly scoped signed URL, signed cookie, or managed-video token. Configure the CDN or video service to enforce authorization on every playback request, including HLS or DASH manifests, segments, and alternate renditions. A signed link is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains it can use it within its scope and validity window.
What signed URLs protect—and what they do not
A signed URL is a resource URL accompanied by a provider-validated signature and usually an expiry or access policy. The signature lets the CDN or video service decide whether to serve the requested resource. It is not, by itself, proof that the requester is the same person who logged in or paid: possession of a usable URL may be enough.
That makes signed access useful for limiting who can fetch private or paid media, but it is not DRM. An authorized viewer can still record or redistribute decoded playback. URL signing alone does not prevent copying after playback.
Choose an authorization pattern for the playback session
HLS and DASH playback is a sequence of HTTP requests, not one request for one video file. A player may fetch a manifest, many media segments, alternate renditions, and later retry or range requests. Select a method that authorizes the whole set the player needs.

| Pattern | Fits best when | Tradeoffs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Signed URL per file | You restrict a single object, download, or client that cannot use cookies. | Every protected request needs a valid URL. Ensure the manifest and every referenced object are authorized; signing only the manifest may leave segments inaccessible or exposed. |
| Signed cookie | A viewer needs several restricted CDN files, such as HLS assets, and the browser or native player handles cookies correctly. | It can authorize a set of files without rewriting every resource URL. Test cookie behavior in the actual browsers and native players you support. |
| Prefix-scoped cookie or request policy | Your provider supports a policy for a URL prefix and expiry. | It can cover a family of media objects, but the allowed prefix must be as narrow as practical. |
| Managed video token | A hosted video service provides token issuance and tokenized playback URLs. | It can reduce CDN and origin authorization plumbing, but the provider’s expiry, access controls, download options, and integration constraints apply. |
Before choosing, check how many resources a session requests, whether the target player supports cookies and redirects, whether URL rewriting is required, how expiry interacts with refresh and retries, how the origin is restricted, how signing keys are rotated, whether IP or geographic restrictions are available, and how much infrastructure you want to manage.
Implement the secure playback flow
- Put media behind an enforcing service. Use a CDN or hosted video service configured to require authorization. If object storage is the origin, block direct public access where feasible so viewers cannot bypass the CDN.
- Authenticate and authorize in your application. When a viewer requests a video, verify their login and entitlement—such as a purchase, subscription, or membership—before creating playback credentials.
- Sign on a trusted backend. Create a scoped token with an expiry using a backend or managed signing service. Keep private signing keys and API credentials out of browser and mobile application code.
- Deliver credentials securely. Return the signed URL or set the cookie over HTTPS. For a hosted platform, configure the video to require signed playback before using its token endpoint or signing key.
- Cover every playback resource. Confirm that the mechanism applies to the manifest, segments, renditions, and retry requests the player can make. Do not assume that authorization on a manifest automatically covers its referenced files.
- Set a practical lifetime and refresh path. Balance link sharing risk against playback duration, buffering, clock differences, and reconnects. Provide a way for a legitimate session to obtain refreshed credentials if it outlasts the token.
- Test both allowed and denied cases. Across the browsers and native players you support, test permitted playback, unauthorized access, expired and modified credentials, and direct-origin requests.
Provider-specific considerations
Amazon CloudFront
CloudFront’s documented flow has the application decide whether a viewer is entitled, create a signed URL, and let CloudFront validate its signature and policy. It supports canned and custom policies; custom policies can include a not-before time and IP range as well as expiry. AWS lists RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256 keys for signed URLs and cookies. AWS recommends signed cookies when granting access to multiple restricted files, explicitly including HLS video files; signed URLs suit individual files or clients that do not support cookies. Consider origin access control so viewers cannot fetch an S3 object directly. CloudFront checks expiry on each HTTP request, so later range requests after expiry fail even if an earlier request began before expiry. Include required query parameters before signing; AWS says adding parameters after signing can result in a 403. See CloudFront signed URL guidance, its signed URL versus cookie guidance, and its private content overview.

Cloudflare Stream
Cloudflare says that, by default, Stream videos can be viewed by anyone with only a video ID. Enabling requireSignedURLs prevents public-ID playback and requires a signed token; the token can be used in HLS and DASH manifest URLs. Cloudflare’s documentation says a token endpoint request without a body returns a token expiring in one hour, with no other restrictions or download access. Custom claims can change expiry and access restrictions, and downloadable can enable MP4 or audio download URLs. These are Cloudflare-specific behaviors; confirm the current service documentation before implementation. See Cloudflare Stream security documentation (displayed last updated May 7, 2026).
Google Cloud CDN and Media CDN
Google Cloud CDN signed URLs are time-limited and usable by anyone who possesses them; a URLPrefix can cover multiple URLs. Google specifically describes signed cookies for HLS/DASH because signing every segment and rendition URL per user can burden the application and increase origin load. Cookies can cover a URL prefix and expiry without rewriting each manifest URL. Google recommends HTTPS for signed URLs and secure transport for distributing them. Anyone with a signing key can create accepted URLs or cookies until that key is deleted. Media CDN advises allowing for clock synchronization and network retries; its documentation says to set timestamps no less than one minute into the future or no less than the video stream length, whichever is greater. Verify current service-specific syntax and behavior before deployment. See Cloud CDN signed URL documentation, Cloud CDN content access control, and Media CDN signed requests.

Common failures and how to address them
- The manifest loads but segments fail—or segments remain exposed. Authorization may cover only the manifest. Ensure the chosen policy also covers every referenced segment and rendition.
- Users can access media outside the CDN. The origin may still be publicly reachable. Restrict origin access so CDN policy cannot be bypassed.
- Signing works in development but the key is exposed in production. A key shipped in client code can be extracted and used to forge credentials. Move signing to a trusted backend or managed signing service, and protect and rotate keys.
- Shared links keep working longer than intended. A copied bearer URL can be used until expiry or revocation, subject to its policy. Use an appropriate short lifetime and avoid unnecessarily exposing or logging tokens.
- Playback stops during a long session or retry. Later segment, range, or retry requests can arrive after expiry. Implement credential refresh and test buffering, reconnects, and clock differences.
- A correctly intended URL returns an authorization error. The path or query may differ from what was signed, or required parameters may have been added afterward. Sign the exact resource and parameters required by the provider.
- You expect signing to stop screen recording or redistribution. Signed access governs fetching, not what an authorized viewer does with decoded playback. Use a separate content-protection approach if that threat is in scope.
Or let it run in the cloud
