Short answer: prepare a tested second internet connection for a broadband outage, a backup encoder for a computer or encoder failure, and backup power for equipment that needs it. These solve different problems: a second encoder cannot restore a failed internet link, and a powered router cannot help if its broadband connection or the local mobile network is down.
Identify what has failed before choosing a fix
“The internet went down” can describe several different failures. Work out which part of the streaming chain is affected: the encoder or computer, the wired broadband access link, Wi-Fi or local networking, or mains power. A different remedy is needed for each. A disruption to connectivity can break the stream, as YouTube’s streaming tips warn.
- Encoder or computer failure: a tested backup encoder can take over if internet access remains available.
- Broadband line or provider outage: you need a separate working internet access path, such as mobile data or an available fixed-wireless service.
- Wi-Fi trouble: connect the computer to the router by Ethernet if possible. Replacing the router will not repair a failed broadband line.
- Power cut: keep the encoder and network equipment powered with compatible backup power. Power backup cannot restore a failed provider connection or mobile tower.
Whether a fallback works depends on your exact location, signal, sustained upload speed, equipment and the cause of the outage. No connection type guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
Prepare the primary stream for a connection problem
Check upload speed where and when you will stream
YouTube recommends using Ethernet for live streaming from a computer. Test from the actual streaming position, at the time of day your event will run, and repeat the tests. Look at sustained upload speed and variation, not just a single download-speed result. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Choose a stream bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube publishes recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. The H.264 recommendations include these examples:

These are platform recommendations, not proof that a connection can sustain the chosen setting. Leave the recommended upload headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution if your connection cannot hold the stream reliably. Check YouTube’s current bitrate guidance before going live; its settings may change.

Test the full stream, not just the speed test
Set up an unlisted test stream and check stream health, picture, audio and chat. YouTube recommends testing before an event. A speed test cannot show whether your encoder, settings and connection will work together through a real changeover.
Build a fallback for each failure type
Broadband outage: arrange another access path
A phone hotspot using mobile data can provide a different access path if the carrier has usable coverage, adequate sustained upload at your location and enough data allowance. Another fixed-wireless service may also be an option where available. A second service is useful only to the extent its failure risks differ from those of the primary link: separate subscriptions may still share vulnerable local power, towers or upstream infrastructure. The reviewed provider information does not establish network independence for any particular Indian locality, so test your own setup.

YouTube advises checking mobile signal and using a strong-signal area. Hotspot performance can vary with signal, congestion, the phone’s heat, plan terms and streaming settings. A good download result alone does not establish sufficient upload. Rehearse using the actual phone, carrier, location and stream settings.
For mobile livestreaming, YouTube gives an approximate usage figure of about 10 MB per minute. Actual consumption varies with settings, so check your plan and observe data use during a test rather than treating that figure as a guaranteed allowance. See YouTube’s mobile filming tips.

Encoder failure: configure YouTube’s backup encoder
YouTube’s backup encoder is for encoder failover, not internet failover. A second encoder cannot keep the stream online if both depend on the same broadband link and that link fails.
Where YouTube requires matching settings, configure the backup to match the primary stream exactly, including resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio settings. Test the transition before the event. YouTube recommends simulating a failure by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking whether the player rolls over to the backup. Power cut: keep every required device running
List the equipment in the streaming chain that needs power: computer or encoder, router, modem or other network equipment, and phone if it is the hotspot. A mini UPS for a Wi-Fi router may help only if it is compatible with that device and provides realistic runtime. Check voltage, current and connector requirements; compatibility and runtime depend on the specific equipment. A powered router with no working upstream connection still cannot send the stream.

- Check the failure. Confirm whether the encoder still has internet access and whether the problem is Wi-Fi, the broadband link, power or the encoder itself. If possible, use Ethernet for the computer or move the hotspot phone to a stronger-signal location.
- If broadband is down, switch to the prepared alternate connection. Check that it has stable upload, then lower bitrate or resolution if needed. A mobile connection’s download speed does not prove that its upload can sustain your stream.
- If the encoder failed but internet remains available, use the tested backup encoder. It will not overcome a lost sole internet link.
- If power failed, restore power to every necessary device. A backup for only the router is insufficient if the computer, modem or hotspot phone is off.
- If the stream drops, re-establish it and update viewers through another channel if possible. Do not promise seamless continuity unless you have tested the exact setup under realistic failure conditions.
India-specific backup connection options
JioAirFiber
Jio says existing JioFiber customers may opt for AirFiber as an additional backup and advises checking availability by city or locality. That makes it a possible second connection—not a guarantee of coverage at your address, automatic failover, a particular upload speed or protection from local outages. Check Jio’s AirFiber information for current availability.
Airtel Xstream AirFiber
Airtel describes Xstream AirFiber as fixed wireless access over its 5G Plus network and says feasibility depends on 5G availability. Its plan page advertises up to 100 Mbps and a 1 TB monthly allowance before throttling to 2 Mbps. These are plan-page terms, which can change; an advertised maximum speed does not establish sustained upload performance for live streaming. Check local feasibility and current terms at Airtel’s Xstream AirFiber page.
Compare the actual fallback, not just its advertised speed
- Is the alternate access path available where you stream, and is its signal usable indoors or outdoors?
- Does it have stable, sustained upload and acceptable variation at the time of your event?
- Does it have enough data, and what happens under its throttling terms?
- How quickly can you switch, and will your encoder and stream settings survive the change?
- Does the backup need power, and will it remain usable during the same outage?
- Could it share a tower, power source or upstream route with your primary connection?
There is no universal best provider for India established by these service descriptions. Local availability and a rehearsal from your streaming location matter more than a headline speed.
