If a YouTube stream stalls when your router renews an IP address, the timing is a useful clue—not proof that the renewal caused the interruption. First find out whether the router renewed its ISP-facing WAN lease or a device renewed its private LAN lease, then compare the stall time with router logs and test other devices or connections. There is no universal setting that safely prevents this symptom; repeated WAN drops need investigation by your router maker or ISP.
What “the router renewed its IP” can mean
There are two separate DHCP relationships that are easy to confuse:
- WAN lease: The router receives an address from the ISP on its internet-facing connection. A WAN disconnect, changed address, modem resynchronization, or router reboot around renewal could interrupt traffic for devices throughout the home.
- LAN lease: A phone, TV, console, or computer receives a private address from the router. A device renewing this lease is not the same event as the router renewing its WAN lease.
Microsoft’s DHCP troubleshooting guidance describes a client sending a unicast renewal request after 50 percent of its lease time. That timing fact alone does not mean a router or YouTube stream should disconnect. A LAN-side renewal is not a reason to change the router’s WAN settings, and a client-side static IP would not repair a WAN-side failure.
Check whether the renewal and the stall are actually connected
1. Record the exact time and scope of the problem
Note when playback freezes, whether it recovers by itself, and what else loses internet access. If only one TV or device stalls while other devices and services remain online, investigate that device or its YouTube app as well as the network. If several devices lose access together, a router, modem, or ISP-side interruption becomes more plausible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Identify which address or connection changed
Open your router’s status page or event log and look for the WAN status, DHCP lease events, a changed WAN address, link-down/link-up events, modem reconnection, or a reboot at the stall time. Menu labels vary by router model. If the log only shows a phone or TV renewing its LAN lease, that is different evidence from a WAN lease renewal or internet-link drop.
3. Compare another device, service, or internet connection
Try the same YouTube content on another supported device. Check whether other internet services also stop responding. If you can, replay the video over a different internet connection. YouTube Help’s general playback advice includes changing the connection, reopening the app, and comparing another supported device; its TV guidance also recommends checking speed and router proximity or interference. YouTube gives 7 Mbps as a recommended minimum connection speed for HD streaming on TV, but that is general playback guidance—not a diagnosis or fix for a stall that coincides with WAN renewal.

4. Check the physical and software path without assuming a cure
TP-Link’s manufacturer troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the internet/WAN IP and distinguishing router, modem, and ISP causes; its instability guidance also covers cabling and model-specific firmware. These are sensible checks, not proof that a cable change or update will fix a DHCP renewal problem. Keep firmware current only by following the instructions for your exact router model and hardware revision.
5. Repeat the observation before escalating
A single coincidence cannot establish cause. If multiple stalls repeatedly line up with WAN lease activity or link loss, save the timestamps and relevant log entries. A NETGEAR Community post describes one R7400 owner reporting WAN disconnections on lease renewal; it is an individual, model-specific report and does not show how other routers behave.

What to do if WAN drops recur at renewal
Contact the router manufacturer or ISP with useful evidence rather than asking for a generic setting that stops renewals. Include:
- Router model, hardware revision, and firmware version.
- The ISP and connection type, if known.
- The exact timestamps of stalls and matching WAN log events.
- Whether the WAN address changed, the link went down and up, the modem resynchronized, or the router rebooted.
- Whether other devices and services lost access at the same time.
Available guidance does not establish a universal lease timer or WAN setting that safely prevents this symptom. Ask the router maker or ISP to interpret the specific logs and connection configuration.

When WAN failover is worth considering
Failover is a continuity option only if you have a compatible router and a separate, working backup internet source. The router can switch when it detects the primary connection has failed, but handoff may interrupt existing sessions; it is not a confirmed repair for a renewal fault and does not guarantee an already-running YouTube session will survive.
Before buying or configuring anything, confirm the exact router model, hardware revision, firmware, supported backup modes, failure-detection behavior, and the cost and data allowance of the second connection. TP-Link’s TL-WR1502X guide, updated May 20, 2025, describes Multi-WAN Backup with a primary connection and secondary backup mode, while warning that availability varies by hardware revision, firmware, and region. TP-Link’s dual-WAN guidance describes moving new sessions to another line after a dropped primary connection is detected. These examples describe capabilities, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.
