First find out where the buffering occurs. If OBS shows Dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health, troubleshoot the connection from your encoder to YouTube: check upload capacity, bitrate, encoder settings, and the network path. If only some viewers see stalls while OBS and YouTube report a healthy stream, the problem may be on the playback side instead. A NAS upgrade is worth considering only if the NAS is actually encoding or transcoding the video.
Identify which part of the stream is buffering
A YouTube live stream has at least three relevant parts: the NAS or media source, the encoder and its connection to YouTube, and YouTube playback on each viewer’s device and network. A symptom in one part does not automatically diagnose another.
- OBS shows increasing dropped frames: OBS says this indicates that the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. Start with the encoder’s upload connection, not the viewer’s playback settings.
- YouTube Live Control Room shows a stream-health warning: Read the specific message; it can point to a configuration problem such as bitrate or keyframe interval.
- Only one viewer, device, or network reports stalls: That alone does not establish that the encoder-to-YouTube connection is failing. Compare the stream-health status and ask whether other viewers experience the same problem.
- The NAS is slow while processing the video: Investigate NAS performance only if it is encoding or transcoding the stream. If it simply stores or supplies a finished video to a separate encoder, its CPU is not automatically the cause of dropped frames.
For an always-on setup, diagnose it while running representative video and audio rather than relying on a brief idle test. Change one setting or connection at a time, then test again so you can tell whether the change helped.
Lower bitrate to match stable upload capacity
Run an upload speed test, as YouTube recommends, but do not size a continuous stream around a single peak result. Consider the upload capacity that remains stable over time and any other household traffic using the connection. If OBS reports dropped frames, lower the encoder bitrate and retest.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee or a YouTube requirement. The suitable rate depends on your actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection stability.
YouTube’s listed video bitrate recommendations
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these recommendations for the specified output settings. Use the row matching the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures are not interchangeable across configurations.

| Codec | Output | YouTube-listed bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s technical recommendations on its maintained encoder-settings page; that page does not state a publication year for the table. If your upload connection cannot reliably sustain the rate appropriate to your chosen output, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then run another representative test.
Verify encoder settings and stream health
Use YouTube’s listed encoder settings as a baseline and check Live Control Room messages rather than assuming every interruption has the same cause.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for the live encoder settings.
- Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate), as specified in YouTube’s recommendations.
- Keyframe interval: Set two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Its API documentation identifies intervals longer than four seconds as a buffering risk.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Frame rate: The listed guidance supports up to 60 fps. Match the settings and bitrate recommendation to the output you actually send.
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not remove the need for a stable encoder-to-YouTube connection or make a viewer-side playback stall proof of an encoder fault.
Stabilize the network path between encoder and YouTube
- If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection when practical.
- If already wired, inspect the path. Check that the cable is seated and examine the router, switch, network card, extender, and other devices between the encoder and internet connection. OBS identifies these as possible fault points; a new cable is not automatically required.
- Retest under the same representative workload. Avoid changing several network settings at once, or it will be harder to identify what fixed—or failed to fix—the problem.
- If connection trouble persists, follow OBS’s troubleshooting branches. Where available, test another ingest server or streaming service; check network optimization settings, VPN or security software interference, drivers, and hardware. If those checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP.
When NAS performance is relevant
The NAS matters as a processing bottleneck only when it is in the real-time video-processing path—for example, if it is encoding or transcoding the source before sending it to YouTube. In that case, check whether the job can sustain real-time output and whether the NAS is struggling during the stream.

Plex’s guidance that a server may buffer when it cannot transcode fast enough, and that many home NAS devices have limited processors, concerns Plex playback and transcoding. It does not establish that NAS CPU is causing YouTube ingest buffering in a setup where the NAS merely stores or serves a finished file. Confirm what is doing the encoding before considering an upgrade.
